In an interim relief to 40 students pursuing a course in optometry, the Bombay High Court has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to declare their second semester results pending since last year. A bench of Justices R M Sawant and S V Kotwal was earlier this week hearing a petition filed by Lotus College of Optometry, which had admitted the 40 students as the first batch of its four-year BSc degree in Optometry (health specialists in eye care) in 2016. The course was affiliated to an open university. However, a question mark now looms over the fate of the course as well as that of the students since, soon after their first semester exams in 2016, the Maharashtra government issued a communication to the UGC stating that Optometry was a medical course and therefore could not be affiliated with an open university. Principals of 11 schools from here were booked for allegedly running "unauthorised" schools, police said today. "The 11 schools located in Mumbra and Diva areas were declared unauthorised by the education department of the Thane Municipal Corporation. But despite that these principals are still operating the schools," Thane Police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar told PTI. Following a complaint by the education officer of the civic body, we have last night registered a case against these 11 principals under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Narkar said. She further said that the director and secretaries of these schools have also been booked as despite knowing that the schools were asked to close down, they gave admission to the students.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today accused the Assam government of playing politics with the existence of the Assam Women's University (AWU) where students are agitating since March 5 over demands such as appointment of permanent vice-chancellor. The AASU, an influential students body, took out a rally in Jorhat, in which organisations like Assam Women University Students Forum participated. The Assam government today announced to bring in a rectifying Bill to solve the impasse in the Assam Women's University where students are agitating over the demand for a permanent vice-chancellor since March 5. The professor denied the allegations as "baseless". He told PTI that it was part of efforts to ruin his professional life. "I had questioned (many) teachers for their absence.
