Akhtar distributes Rs 13 crore royalty to composers, authors

Veteran film writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who is chairman of the Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS), today distributed Rs 13 crore among its members as part of the royalty given by music companies. The Akhtar-headed 48-year-old copyright royalty collection body is an officially registered copyright society for musical works and associated literary works in India. As many as 2,800 members of the IPRS will be paid 'synchronisation royalty' by Phonographic Performance Ltd PPL) on behalf of music companies like Saregama, Sony Music, Tips, Universal Music, Venus and Aditya Music. "I'm glad this has happened. So far so good but we have a long way to go. It's not as if this is the end. People with whom we had differences of opinion, we have now reached an understanding with them and have smoothened out all the differences," Akhtar told PTI. But his observation that people will soon get "Avengers fatigue" does not worry Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, who is on cloud nine after knowing that the veteran filmmaker loves superhero films. The CIMA Art Mela 2018 will travel to the national capital this week where collectors will get an opportunity to buy works donated by artists of the likes Jogen Choudhury, Ganesh Pyne, Manu Parekh and Arpita Singh among many others. New York Indian Film Fest to screen docu on Rituparno Ghosh

A documentary film by director Sangeeta Datta on the life and works of National Award-winning auteur Rituparno Ghosh has been selected for screening at the New York Indian Film Festival. Ghosh, an avant garde director of Bengali films, passed away in 2013 at the age of 49, following a cardiac arrest. 'Bird of Dusk' features Ghosh's interviews, conversations and texts from personal narratives in 'First Person', published serially in a regional newspaper's Sunday magazine, Dutta said, adding that she had assisted the filmmaker in his award-winning venture 'Chokher Bali'.
