Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballe dies at 85

Montserrat Caballe, a Spanish opera singer renowned for her bel canto technique and her interpretations of the roles of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti, has died. She was 85. Caballe died early Saturday at Hospital San Pau in Barcelona, hospital spokesman Abraham del Moral told The Associated Press. Caballe's family requested the cause of death not be released, saying that she had been in the hospital since September, del Moral said. Spanish media said that Caballe entered the hospital last month because of a gall bladder problem. "A great ambassador of our country has died," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a tweet . "Her voice and tenderness will remain with us forever." Born into a working class family in Barcelona, Caballe unveiled her musical talents early on, singing Bach cantatas at the age of 7. Nandita Das wants 'Manto' to be screened globally, including Pakistan

Actor-director Nandita Das hopes that her latest feature "Manto", gets a global release, especially in Pakistan, as the film is a biographical drama on famed Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto who had left India after the Partition. "I wish, like many other Bollywood films, it is screened in Pakistan," she told PTI after screening of "Manto" at the South Asian Film Festival on Friday. "'Manto' must be shown in Pakistan as the author is an Indian and a Pakistani too," said Das, who left for Busan for the film's screening at the Korean film festival. The film follows the title character, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and shows the painful strains of separation following the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. Hollywood star Naomi Watts has been roped in to play the role of Gretchen Carlson in the upcoming Showtime limited series about former Fox News head Roger Ailes. Sherman co-wrote the first episode of the series with Tom McCarthy. 'Bhonsle' overwhelms crowd at Busan International Film Festival

Manoj Bajpayee's next feature "Bhonsle" had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival where it got an outstanding reception from the audience. The 23rd edition of the festival is being held in the port city of Busan. It started on Thursday and will conclude on October 13. Directed by Devashish Makhija, the film features Bajpayee as the terminally ill lone wolf Maharashtrian cop Bhonsle. Retired against his will, in politically tumultuous Mumbai, Bhonsle finds himself forging an unlikely companionship with a 23-year-old North-Indian girl and her little brother, while the raging conflict destroying the world around them reaches his doorstep, giving him one last battle worth fighting for, but it might just be too late.
