Irrfan Khan-starrer "Doob" ("No Bed of Roses") is Bangladesh's official entry for the Oscars next year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film, directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, that was initially banned in Bangladesh, will be contesting in the Best Foreign Language category at the 91st Academy Awards. "Doob" courted controversy in the wake of reports that it was loosely based on late Bangladeshi writer and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed. Farooki denied that it was a biopic and the film later received a No Objection Certificate from the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation. The film released on October 27, 2017. The movie features Irrfan, who is currently in London undergoing treatment for neuroendocrine tumour, in the lead. Assam Governor and Chief Minister condoled the demise of filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, saying she had brought "sidelined issues" into mainstream Bollywood movies. In an official release, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi mourned the death of writer-director Kalpana Lajmi, who passed away Sunday at the age of 64. "A filmmaker par excellence, her death is an irreparable loss to the world of cinema," Mukhi said. Lajmi, who was famous for bringing sidelined issues into mainstream Bollywood movies, was often credited for her ventures in women-oriented movies, he added. Defending the ban on DJ and Dolby sound during the Ganesh festival which ends Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Lord Ganesh does not need such hi-tech sound amplifying systems. The government's ban on DJ and Dolby sound has created resentment among some Ganesh mandals (groups which celebrate the festival in public), but the Bombay High Court upheld it earlier this week. Speaking to the media after the immersion of Ganesh idol installed at the chief minister's residence 'Varsha' here, Fadnavis said, "Lord Ganesh does not need DJ-Dolby, it has become our need, for our enthusiasm. "Traditional musical instruments are more enjoyable. Loud music causes noise pollution. I think the revelry should not be diminished, but we should also think of environment and traditions," he said.
