French drama presents India sans the cliches

French director Mia Hansen- Love's "Maya", one of three India-set titles in the Special Presentations selection of the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival, provides a genteel, non-judgmental, understated view of the country, shunning the cliches that the western cinematic gaze on the subcontinent often falls prey to. Filmed primarily in Goa, "Maya" tells the story of a restorative trip to India that a French war correspondent undertakes after being released from several months of captivity in Syria. The film, also shot on location in Kolkata, Mumbai and Hampi, isn't big on plot and draws its strength from Hansen-Love's ability to funnel emotion into little gestures and subtle human exchanges. Steering clear of the chaos, squalor and poverty of the land and focusing on real people grappling with believable life issues, "Maya" is a delicate little film that probes an unlikely relationship that develops between the 32-year-old war reporter Gabriel Dahan, played by Roman Kolinka, and

It's upsetting to read about allegations against woody Allen, says Jesse Eisenberg

Actor Jesse Eisenberg has said it was "upsetting" for him to read about the allegations against veteran filmmaker Woody Allen, who he believes "changed" his life. In an interview with The Guardian, the 34-year-old actor, who worked with the filmmaker on the movies "To Rome with Love" and "Cafe Society", said the allegations against Allen exists in the "greyer area" and he feels torn by it. "As for Woody Allen, I was 16 years old when I discovered him. I've read everything he's written, I've watched everything he's made. He's changed my life more than any other creative inspiration," Eisenberg said. "And so when I read about something like this, it's upsetting to me and I don't know what to think, because it exists in a greyer area than a lot of the other allegations. Thrillers project your fears on screen: Sriram Raghvan

In Sriram Raghavan's world, improbability is just a plot point. The director, who has given timeless thrillers such as "Ek Haseena Thi", "Johnny Gaddar" and "Badlapur" to Hindi cinema, is back with another mystery in "Andhadhun", where a blind pianist is at the centre of a murder. Raghavan says he is attracted to such stories because it is fascinating to de-construct the psyche of a person in a pickle. "People often get caught in situations or do something that they regret for the rest of their lives. What happens and how you try to cover up is the story. These are not career criminals. I relate to it because there is this possibility that it can happen to anyone. "We all are scared of bad things... So when you are watching a film, you see your fears on the screen. You have this thought 'Thank God, it is happening to someone else'," the director told PTI in an interview. It was a long brewing idea that finally took shape in "Andhadhun", which features Ayushmann Khurrana as the blind ..
