Women writers dominate 2018 DSC Literature Prize entries

The DSC Prize has emerged as a top recognition in South Asia's literary landscape and this year more than half of the eligible entries from publishers worldwide include novels written by women. The novels submitted for the DSC Prize 2018 are at present being read and evaluated by a five-member international jury panel which would first announce a longlist of 12 to 15 books in New Delhi in early October. Thereafter the shortlist of five or six books would be announced in London in November and the eventual winner of the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2018 would be announced at a special award ceremony to be held in February 2019 in a South Asian country. According to the presenters of the USD 25,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, this year more submissions have come in for novels authored by women writers as compared to their male counterparts. It has been over a year since Shruti Haasan made her last appearance on the big screen and the actor says it was a conscious decision to stay away from the camera as she wanted to reassess her career. Shruti, 32, who is the elder daughter of veteran actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, says she took the decision to take a break to "reorganise" herself. "I took a conscious decision to take a break for one year. I thought it was important to take a break and reassess what I wanted to do. Writer Ramendra Kumar invited in IBBY in Athens

Award winning children's writer Ramendra Kumar has been invited to grace the upcoming 36th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) Congress in Athens. Besides chairing an important session at the 3-day IBBY Congress beginning in Athens from August 30, Kumar said he was also slated to present a paper on 'The Brave New World of Indian Childrens Literature.' Three globally acclaimed speakers from three continents - North America, Europe and Asia - will present papers during the session to be chaired by Kumar, who is a distinguished children's writer and chief of communications in the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The Congress, which is expected to attract at least 450 delegates from more than 70 countries, is considered the biggest biennial global event focusing on childrens literature, a statement from RSP said. Influential dancer, mime artist Lindsay Kemp dies at 80

Influential British dancer, choreographer and mime artist Lindsay Kemp, known for tutoring singers David Bowie and Kate Bush during his career, has died at 80. Director Nendie Pinto-Duschinsky, who is making a documentary called "Lindsay Kemp's Last Dance," said today that Kemp died suddenly after a "perfect" day rehearsing with his students. He was about to work on his memoirs and to go on tour, she said. She wrote on the film's Facebook page that "I'm so sorry to tell you Lindsay passed away last night ... he was very happy and it was very sudden." French Montana, Adam Levine drop new single for good cause

In order to raise money for a maternity and children's health care centre in Uganda, Hollywood Rapper French Montana and singer Adam Levine released a new single.Both the singers teamed up to produce the remixed version of Montana's hit song 'Famous' from his 2017 album 'Jungle Rules', reported CNN.Montana will donate his royalties earned from the new song to the Suubi Center, which happens to be an underfunded maternity and children's health clinic in Uganda.Speaking to CNN, he said that helping a mother and a child should be everyone's concern.
