Trump indicted: All you need to know about documents case and what's next

Donald Trump's indictment on charges of mishandling classified documents at his Florida estate has brought renewed attention to one of the most notable cases in Justice Department history. The federal charges represent the biggest legal jeopardy so far for Trump, coming less than three months after he was charged in New York with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Here's a look at the charges, the special counsel's investigation and how Trump's case differs from those of other politicians known to be in possession of classified documents: WHAT ARE THE CHARGES? Trump has been charged with seven counts related to the mishandling of classified documents, according to two people familiar with the indictment but not authorized to speak publicly about it. The charges themselves are unclear and remain under seal, one person said. Trump announced Thursday night on his social media site Truth Social that Justice Department lawyers had informed his legal team that he had been

Trump lawyers seek meet with Garland as Mar-a-Lago investigation continue

Lawyers for Donald Trump on Tuesday asked for a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland as a Justice Department investigation into the former president's handling of classified documents shows signs of winding down. In the letter, which Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, attorneys John Rowley and James Trusty asserted that Trump is being treated unfairly and asked for a meeting to discuss the ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors. The language echoed some of Trump's own complaints in recent months about the investigations being led by special counsel Jack Smith. It was not immediately clear what specifically prompted the letter, but the yearlong documents probe appears to be nearing an end. Agents and prosecutors have interviewed a broad cross-section of witnesses, including attorneys for Trump, former White House officials and other close aides. The investigation is seeking to determine whether Trump illegally retained

Disney scraps plans for new Florida campus as fight with Guv continues

The Walt Disney Co. announced Thursday that it was scrapping plans to build a new campus in central Florida and relocate 2,000 employees from Southern California to work in digital technology, finance and product development. The decision follows a year of attacks from Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Legislature, with Disney filing a First Amendment lawsuit against him and other officials last month. Disney had planned to build the campus about 30 kilometers from the giant Walt Disney World theme park resort, but Josh D'Amaro, chairman of the parks, experiences and products division, said in a memo to employees that "new leadership and changing business conditions" prompted the company to abandon those plans. "I remain optimistic about the direction of our Walt Disney World business," D'Amaro said. "We have plans to invest USD 17 billion and create 13,000 jobs over the next ten years. I hope we're able to do so." The governor's office didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comme

Donald Trump heads to New York amid tight security ahead of his surrender

Former President Donald Trump boarded his private plane on Monday and flew from Florida toward New York ahead of his expected booking and arraignment, as the nation's largest city bolstered security and warned potential agitators that it is not a playground for your misplaced anger. Trump's ground journey from his Mar-a-Lago club to his red, white and blue Boeing 757, emblazoned with TRUMP in gold letters was carried live on national television and took him past supporters waving banners and cheering the former president. Trump and his supporters criticize the case against him - stemming from hush money payments during his 2016 campaign -as politically motivated. The scene was quite different in New York, where Trump built a national profile in business and entertainment but became deeply unpopular as he moved into politics. His return to the city opens an unprecedented chapter in American history, with Trump being the first former president to face criminal charges even as he is in

Florida Senate passes bill to carry concealed guns without a permit

Floridians will be able to carry concealed guns without a permit under a bill the Legislature sent to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. The governor, who is considering a presidential run, has said the issue is one of his priorities. The Senate passed the bill on a 27-13 vote. It will allow anyone who can legally own a gun in Florida to carry one without a permit. It means training and a background check will not be needed for people to carry concealed guns in public. The arguments over the legislation were divided on political lines, with Republicans saying law-abiding citizens have a right to carry guns and protect themselves and Democrats saying a state that has seen horrific mass shootings such as the Parkland high school and Pulse nightclub massacres will become even more dangerous. Nearly 3 million Floridians have a concealed weapons permit. While a background check and three-day waiting period will still be required to purchase a gun from a licensed dealer, they are not required

As Brazil reels from riots, Bolsonaro finds rental home in Florida

As Brazil reels from mobs of rioters swarming its seats of power, its former leader has decamped to a Florida resort, where droves of supporters flocked to cheer on their ousted president. Devotees have traveled in recent days to the temporary home of Jair Bolsonaro, a gated community with towering waterslides, for a chance to see him. He signed autographs, hugged children and took selfies with adoring masses, some sporting Make Brazil Great Again shirts. I will always support him, said 31-year-old Rafael Silva, who left Brazil eight years ago and now installs flooring in central Florida, where he stood outside Bolsonaro's rental home Monday. He was the best for the country. By early afternoon, the handful of supporters in yellow jerseys dissipated as word spread that Bolsonaro was hospitalized with abdominal pain. His wife, Michelle, said on social media that he had been hospitalized for observation due to abdominal discomfort related to a 2018 stabbing that has led to multiple ...

US removes more than 300 Cuban migrants from remote Florida islands

The Coast Guard removed more than 300 Cuban migrants from a remote island national park off the Florida coast Thursday as the US government sought to handle the latest influx in people arriving by boat from the communist island. Homeland Security officials said the Coast Guard took 337 migrants from Dry Tortugas National Park on a 70-mile (113-kilometer) trip to Key West, where they will be processed. They were among more than 700 migrants, mostly Cubans, who arrived in Florida by boat over the New Year's weekend, prompting officials in Florida to appeal to the federal government to do more to deter migrants arriving illegally. On Thursday, the Biden administration signaled a tougher stance on migrants coming from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, while offering a new path for migrants from those countries to enter legally. The government said it would immediately start turning away Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans who cross the US-Mexico border illegally, as it has done with ..

Florida high court allows grand jury probe of coronavirus vaccines

The Florida Supreme Court will convene a grand jury at Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' request to investigate any wrongdoing with respect to the COVID-19 vaccines, the court announced Thursday. The Republican governor, who is often mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2024, earlier this month called for the investigation. He suggested it would be in part aimed to jog loose more information from pharmaceutical companies about the vaccines and potential side effects. Vaccine studies funded by pharmaceutical companies that developed COVID-19 vaccines have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, and government panels reviewed data on the safety and effectiveness of the shots before approving them for use. DeSantis' request argues that pharmaceutical companies had a financial interest in creating a climate in which people believed that getting a coronavirus vaccine would ensure they couldn't spread the virus to others. President Joe Biden hits campaign trail, blasting Republicans in Florida

President Joe Biden tore into Republican proposals to undo prescription drug price caps and change Social Security and Medicare on Tuesday, campaigning hard for Democrats in Florida one week before Election Day. In a final-week push, he will be flying to New Mexico on Thursday, California on Friday and Pennsylvania on Saturday. In Florida, a state famously popular among retirees, he declare that the current crop of GOP candidates ain't your father's Republican party" and said that he prayed God would deliver his opponents some enlightenment." After those remarks in Hallandale Beach, he was headlining a fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist and a rally for the state's Democratic Party, including Senate candidate Val Demings. He dinged Demings' Republican opponent, Senator Marco Rubio, for failing to back his Inflation Reduction Act, passed in August by the Democratic-led Congress. It includes several health care provisions popular among elderly people and the ...

Florida deaths rise to 47 amid struggle to recover from hurricane Ian

Rescuers evacuated stunned survivors on a large barrier island cut off by Hurricane Ian and Florida's death toll climbed sharply, as hundreds of thousands of people were still sweltering without power days after the monster storm rampaged from the state's southwestern coast up to the Carolinas. Florida, with nearly four dozen reported dead was hit hardest by the Category 4 hurricane, one of the strongest to make landfall in the United States. Flooded roadways and washed-out bridges to barrier islands left many people isolated, amid limited cell phone service and a lack of basic amenities such as water, electricity and the internet. Florida Gov Ron DeSantis said on Saturday that multibillionaire businessman Elon Musk was providing some 120 Starlink satellites to help bridge some of the communication issues. Starlink, a satellite-based internet system created by Musk's SpaceX, will provide high-speed connectivity. Florida utilities were working to restore power. As of Sunday morning

Hurricane Ian lashes South Carolina as Florida's death toll climbs

A revived Hurricane Ian pounded coastal South Carolina on Friday, ripping apart piers and flooding streets after the ferocious storm caused catastrophic damage in Florida, trapping thousands in their homes and leaving at least 17 people dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said the deaths included a 22-year-old woman ejected in an ATV rollover Friday because of a road washout and a 71-year-old man who died earlier of head injuries when he fell off a roof while putting up rain shutters. Many of the other deaths were drownings, including that of a 68-year-old woman swept into the ocean by a wave. Another three people died in Cuba earlier in the week as the storm churned northward. The death toll was expected to increase substantially once emergency officials have an opportunity to search many of the hardest-hit areas. Ian's center came ashore near Georgetown, South Carolina, with much weaker winds than when it crossed Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday as one of the stronges
