Need to promote circular economy to deal with climate change issues: Kant

There is a need to promote a circular economy to deal with the issues related to climate change, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on Thursday said. Addressing an event virtually, Kant noted different ministries and states are taking initiatives to promote a circular economy. He said in COP 27, India underlined its long-term low carbon emission strategy. India's Presidency for the G20 from December 1 provides an opportunity to the country for an accelerated transition towards the circular economy, he added. Noting that there is a need to create a business environment for the circular economy, he said," We need to ensure that regulations do not become burdensome". The G20 comprises 19 countries -- Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the USA and the European Union (EU). Together, they account for over 80 per cent of the global GDP, 75 per cent of internat

India can use G20 presidency to engage Pakistan on Kashmir: Farooq Abdullah

As India assumes the G20 presidency for a year from next month, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday said the country can use this opportunity to engage Pakistan to address Kashmir issue and also help the world end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said he was tired of advocating dialogue with Pakistan to be dubbed as "anti-national". "I am happy that we (India) are assuming the presidency of G20 and I hope that Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) will be successful in ending the Russia-Ukraine war that had badly hit the economy of the world," Abdullah told reporters here. He said it would be better for the global population if India is able to defuse the crisis. "Secondly, we have a problem with our neighbouring country (Pakistan over Kashmir). There can be a possibility to seek a solution (to the issue) to end our hardships," Abdullah said. India will assume the G20 presidency for a year on December 1 and chair over 200 ...

G20: Trudeau concerned over China's interference in domestic affairs

Chinese President Xi Jinping chastised Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G-20 summit on Wednesday for leaking details of a prior meeting during which Trudeau expressed concern about Chinese interference in domestic affairs. The two had a brief encounter at an event in Indonesia that news outlets were able to record. A television camera was behind a Chinese interpreter in clear view as the two spoke. Everything we discussed has been leaked to the paper; that's not appropriate, Xi told Trudeau through the interpreter. And that's not ... the way the conversation was conducted, if there is sincerity on your part, Xi said, at which point Trudeau interrupted and stepped toward Xi. In Canada, we believe in free and open and frank dialogue and that is what we will continue to have," Trudeau said. "We will continue to look to work constructively together, but there will be things we will disagree on. Xi looked around as Trudeau replied. Let's create the conditions first, Xi responded

G20 summit: Chinese President Jinping, Canadian PM Trudeau exchange barbs

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday exchanged barbs on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali over the leaked reports of their meeting. In perhaps a very rare open remark captured on television camera, an agitated Xi was seen objecting to Trudeau saying whatever they discussed in their earlier meeting was leaked to the media. "Everything we discuss has been leaked to the paper, that's not appropriate," Xi told Trudeau through a translator on the sidelines of the closing session of the G20 meeting. "That is not how the way the conversation was conducted," he said. Xi spoke in Chinese which his official interpreter conveyed in English to Trudeau. But 50-year-old Trudeau, who looked impatient, interrupted the translator, saying: We believe in free and open and frank dialogue and that is what we will continue to have. We will continue to look to work constructively together but there will be things we will disagree on." For which, ...

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India's G-20 presidency will be inclusive, ambitious and action-oriented, noting that it is taking the responsibility at a time the world is grappling with geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown and rising food and energy prices.
