General Motors delays EV pickup truck production at plant near Detroit

General Motors will delay electric pickup truck production at a factory near Detroit due to slowing US demand for electric vehicles, to better manage its capital investments, and to make some engineering changes. The company said in a statement Tuesday that the factory in Orion Township, Michigan, will instead start making electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups in late 2025. Originally the company had planned to start production sometime next year. GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said the change has nothing to do with the ongoing four-week partial strike by members of the United Auto Workers union. What's happening in the marketplace does play a factor, said Kelly, who added that the company wants to make engineering changes that will improve the trucks' profitability. About 1,000 workers at the Orion plant will keep building the Chevrolet Bolt hatchback small electric car and Bolt electric utility vehicle through the end of this year as planned, the company said in a ...

General Motors Employees Union calls for chain hunger strike from Oct 2

The employee union of General Motors India has called for a chain hunger strike from Monday, demanding transfer of all its workers to Hyundai Motor, which plans to acquire its manufacturing facility in Talegaon. The American automobile giant stopped selling its cars in India from 2017. General Motors Employees Union in a statement on Sunday also accused the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena-BJP government of not taking the unemployment issue of thousands of workers of the auto firm seriously. General Motors is selling its Talegaon plant in Pune to Hyundai Motor, while 1,000 permanent workers of General Motors are not being employed by the new company (Hyundai), the union said in a statement. Due to this, the problem of unemployment of thousands of workers has arisen. The (state) government is repeatedly requesting a meeting to get justice, but it is not taking the labour issue seriously, the union said. Therefore, as many as 1,000 workers of General Motors Employees Union will go on cha

GM recalls 900 vehicles with Takata air bag inflators, blames manufacturing

General Motors is recalling nearly 900 vehicles in the US and Canada with Takata air bag inflators that could explode and hurl shrapnel in a crash. The recall covers certain Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic and Volt vehicles as well as the Buick Verano, all from the 2013 model year. The company says in documents posted Tuesday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the driver's front air bag inflator can explode in a crash due to a manufacturing defect. The inflators are among a group made by Takata that is under investigation by the agency but has not previously been recalled. Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time and explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel. At least 26 people have been killed in the US by the inflators since May of 2009, and more than 30 have died worldwide including people in Malaysia and Australia. In ...

General Motors Q2 profit up 52% on strong sales, confirms new Chevy Bolt EV

Despite taking on a huge chunk of an expensive electric vehicle recall, General Motors posted USD 2.54 billion in second-quarter net income, a 52 per cent increase over a year ago. Continued strong vehicle sales and pricing, as well as cost cuts, led to the better-than-expected quarter. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday raised its financial guidance for the full year with one qualification: that it can negotiate union labor contracts without a strike. Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson told reporters that customers paid about USD 1,600 more per vehicle last quarter than from January through March with an average US sale price of USD 52,000. Discounts and inventory remained flat as the company sold 19 per cent more vehicles than a year ago in the US, its most profitable market. We've had an ability and a willingness and a capability to remain disciplined in our pricing and our incentives, Jacobson said. GM raised its full-year guidance for the second straight quarter, saying it w

Threatened by shortages, EV makers race for lithium supplies for batteries

Threatened by possible shortages of lithium for electric car batteries, automakers are racing to lock in supplies of the once-obscure white gold in a politically and environmentally fraught competition from China to Nevada to Chile. General Motors Co. and the parent company of China's BYD Auto Ltd. went straight to the source and bought stakes in lithium miners, a rare step in an industry that relies on outside vendors for copper and other raw materials. Others are investing in lithium refining or ventures to recycle the silvery-white metal from used batteries. A shortfall in lithium supplies would be an obstacle for government and industry plans to ramp up sales to tens of millions of electric vehicles a year. It is fueling political conflict over resources and complaints about the environmental cost of extracting them. "We already have that risk of not being able to get enough, said GM's chief financial officer, Paul A. Jacobson, at a Deutsche Bank conference in mid-June. We've g

General Motor's EVs to gain access to Tesla's vast charging network

Electric vehicles made by General Motors will be able to use much of Tesla's extensive charging network beginning early next year under an agreement the two companies have announced. In addition, GM will adopt Tesla's connector, the plug that links an electric vehicle to a charging station. GM joins Ford in shifting its electric vehicles to work with about 12,000 of Tesla's roughly 17,000 chargers, and both Detroit automakers are pushing to make Tesla's connector the industry standard. Barra and Musk made the announcement during a Twitter Spaces conversation. Their discussion comes two weeks after Ford CEO Jim Farley joined Musk to announce that Ford's electric vehicles would gain access to much of Tesla's EV-charging network, the largest in the nation. Farley also said Ford would switch to Tesla's charging network connector rather than to a different one that is used by the rest of the industry.

GM to invest $1 bn in Flint plants to boost heavy-duty truck production

General Motors plans to invest more than USD 1 billion in two Flint, Michigan manufacturing plants for the production of the next-generation internal combustion engine heavy-duty trucks. Gerald Johnson, executive vice president, Global Manufacturing and Sustainability, said Monday that the company will build internal combustion vehicles throughout this decade, in addition to making electric vehicles. GM has a goal of building only electric passenger vehicles in the United States by 2035. The Detroit automaker reported a 38 per cent year-over-year increase in heavy-duty pickup sales last year, with nearly 288,000 trucks sold. GM will invest USD 788 million in the Flint assembly plant, with updates including a body shop building expansion, general assembly conveyor expansion, and new tooling and equipment. The company will invest USD 233 million in the Flint metal center for new stamping dies to support production of its next-generation ICE heavy-duty trucks, as well as press ...

General Motors hires former Apple executive to run new software unit

General Motors has hired a former high-ranking executive at Apple to run a new software organisation at the automaker. Mike Abbott is joining GM as executive vice president of software on May 22, the Detroit manufacturer said on Tuesday. He'll report directly to CEO Mary Barra. Abbott formerly was vice president of engineering for Apple's cloud services division, leading a team that developed infrastructure for all of the company's cloud-based services including iCloud, iMessage, mail and account security, GM said. He also was a partner at investment firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, focusing on the mobile device and cloud computing areas. GM and other automakers are looking to software as a major revenue source in the future as fleet and other buyers seek vehicle diagnostic systems, partially automated driving software and other services.

General Motors recalls 40,000 medium-duty trucks to fix fire risk

General Motors is recalling certain Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty trucks for model year 2019 or later, following the discovery of a potential leak in brake fluid that could result in a fire. Potentially 40,428 vehicles could be affected. They include 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models with model years between 2019 and 2023, according to documents posted by U.S. safety regulators on Saturday. The vehicles may have a brake pressure sensor assembly that allows brake fluid to leak and cause a short circuit. That in turn increases the risk of a fire that could occur when the vehicle is either driving or parked. GM advises owners with potentially affected models to park outdoors and away from structures until the recall repair is done. Vehicles with model years before 2019 used a different design. GM said it's not aware of any injuries related to the condition.

General Motors' Cruise recalls 300 robotaxis after crash involving bus

General Motors' Cruise autonomous vehicle unit has recalled 300 robotaxis to update software after one of them rear-ended a municipal bus in San Francisco. Cruise says in government documents posted Friday that the robotaxi inaccurately predicted how the bus would move as it pulled out of a bus stop on March 23. The articulated two-section bus slowed as it was leaving the stop and was hit by the self-driving vehicle. Cruise characterised the crash as a fender-bender and said no one was hurt. The company says in documents sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it did the software update on March 25. Cruise determined that the collision was caused by an issue related to prediction of the unique movements of articulated vehicles in rare circumstances, the company said in documents. The company said no other crashes have happened due to the problem and that the same thing won't happen again after the update. Cruise said it did the recall to be transparent and
