Cong asks PM why Gujarat's white onion farmers get preferential treatment

The Congress on Friday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking why Gujarat's white onion farmers were given preferential treatment over Maharashtra's onion farmers, and why has the BJP "diluted" Adivasis' forest rights in Maharashtra. Ahead of Prime Minister Modi's rallies in Dhule and Nashik, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh posed questions to him. "Why were Gujarat's white onion farmers given preferential treatment over Maharashtra's onion farmers," he asked. Since December 2023, onion farmers in Maharashtra have been reeling from the Modi government's restrictions on onion exports, he said. "When the onions were finally harvested, farmers were hit with the arbitrary export ban which led to devastatingly low sale prices. As a result, farmers racked up ...

ED conducts multi-city raids in Gujarat in money laundering, GST fraud case

The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday conducted multi-city searches in Gujarat in connection with a money laundering case linked to a GST "fraud" in which eight people, including a journalist, were arrested recently by the state police, official sources said. About 23 premises in cities of Rajkot, Junagadh, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Veraval were being raided by the federal agency after a case was filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. Premises linked to arrested journalist Mahesh Langa, who works with The Hindu newspaper, were also being covered. The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch. The city Crime Branch registered the FIR against several persons and entities after getting a complaint from the Central GST over an alleged scam involving shell firms set up to defraud the government through bogus input tax credits and fraudulent transactions. Langa along with seven others was arrested after the Central

Gujarat demolition: SC defers hearing on contempt plea against authorities

The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred hearing on a contempt plea against Gujarat authorities for allegedly illegally demolishing residential and religious structures in the state despite an interim stay and without its prior nod. A bench of Justices B R Gavai, P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan listed the plea after three weeks. The plea seeks initiation of contempt proceedings against state authorities for alleged violation of the apex court's September 17 order that there shall be no demolition of properties, including of those accused of crimes, across the country without its permission. At the outset, a lawyer sought pass-over of the hearing on behalf of the solicitor general representing the state authorities. Senior lawyer Sanjay Hegde, appearing for the petitioner, said the state has filed a response to the petition and he wanted to file the rejoinder submissions. "Their defense is that (the structure demolished) was near the Arabian Sea. What prevented them from seeking ...
