Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Wednesday said its Gujarat-based unit has crossed 30 lakh cumulative production milestone. Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) has surpassed the milestone within a span of around 6 years and 11 months since commencing operations in February 2017, MSI said in a statement. SMG has an annual production capacity of 7.5 lakh units and the vehicles manufactured at the plant are sold in both domestic as well as export markets. "With the acquisition of Suzuki Motor Gujarat, we are further enhancing our production flexibility. The production of our battery electric vehicles will also be undertaken at the Gujarat plant and is expected to start in FY 2024-25," MSI MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi stated. Currently, the facility rolls out some of the popular models like Swift, Baleno, Dzire and Fronx. At least three persons, including two grocers, have been arrested, days after five persons died due to suspected consumption of an Ayurvedic syrup containing methanol sold by their shop in Gujarat's Kheda district, police said on Saturday. Two others, who had supplied bottles of the syrup, are yet to be arrested. The shop had sold bottles of the syrup to at least 50 persons, as per the preliminary investigation. A five-member special investigation team (SIT) led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nadiad, was formed to investigate the case, said Kheda district Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya. "We have arrested Kishor Sodha and his brother Ishwar Sodha, the owners of the grocery store which sold the suspected syrup to the victims. A total of 1,052 persons have died of heart attack in Gujarat in the last six months, with 80 per cent of the deceased being in the 11-25 age group, state education minister Kuber Dindor said on Friday. In view of the rising number of heart attacks, nearly two lakh school teachers and college professors will be provided training in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a crucial lifesaving intervention during such medical emergencies, Dindor said. "As many as 1,052 persons have died due to heart attack during the last six months in Gujarat. Nearly 80 per cent of them were in the age-group of 11 to 25 years and these students and youngsters were not even obese. The 108 ambulance service receives 173 cardiac emergency calls per day," said Dindor while addressing the media in Gandhinagar. At least five persons have died due to the suspected consumption of an ayurvedic syrup containing methyl alcohol in Gujarat's Kheda district, police said on Thursday. The deaths took place on November 28 and 29, said Kheda Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya. Methyl alcohol is a poisonous substance. Police are probing at what stage it was added to the syrup. The deceased were suspected to have consumed 'Kalmeghasav - Asava Arishta', an ayurvedic syrup which was sold over the counter to nearly 50 persons by a grocery shop in Bilodara village near Nadiad, the police official said. A fire broke out at a chemical plant in Gujarat's Surat city after an explosion on Wednesday, injuring 24 workers, officials said. The blaze erupted at the chemical factory located in Sachin GIDC industrial area at around 2 am following an explosion in a large tank after leakage of inflammable chemicals stored in it, Surat in-charge chief fire officer Basant Pareek said. "At least 24 workers suffered injuries and were rushed to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment," he said. It was not immediately clear how many workers were inside the factory when the incident took place, he said. "The blast caused fire in the three-storey building of the factory and engulfed the entire unit," another official said. More than a dozen fire-fighting vehicles were rushed to the spot and efforts were underway to contain the blaze, he said.
At least 27 people have been killed in multiple lightning strikes in Gujarat as widespread unseasonal rainfall battered the state, damaging homes and standing crops, officials said on Monday. The lightning-related deaths occurred in a span of 24 hours beginning on early Sunday morning, they said. The rainfall subsided on Monday which saw only intermittent showers at some places in the state. As per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), so far 27 people have lost their lives after being struck by lightning in different parts of Gujarat.
