Stomach issues in kids may signal future mental health problems: Study

Children who face adversities -- such as parental separation -- are more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms which may lead to mental health issues in later life, a study has found. The study, published in the journal Development and Psychopathology, found that gastrointestinal symptoms in children may have an impact on the brain and behaviour as they grow to maturity. "One common reason children show up at doctors' offices is intestinal complaints," said Nim Tottenham, a professor at Columbia University in the US. "Our findings indicate that gastrointestinal symptoms in young children could be a red flag to primary care physicians for future emotional health problems," said Tottenham. Scientists have long noted the strong connection between the gut and brain. Previous research has demonstrated that a history of trauma or abuse has been reported in up to half of adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), at a prevalence twice that of patients without IBS. "The role of ...

Plea seeks doctors write generic name of drugs legibly

A PIL has been moved in the Delhi High Court seeking directions to the Centre and the Medical Council of India (MCI) to ensure that doctors prescribe medicines by writing their generic names legibly and preferably in capital letters. The petition seeks strict compliance of regulation 1.5 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, which mandates every physician "prescribe drugs with generic names legibly and preferably in capital letters". The plea by Amit Sahni, a lawyer by profession, contends that MCI in 2017 had directed all medical practitioners registered under the Indian Medical Council Act to use generic names, but unfortunately no one takes it seriously. The petition claims that "despite issuance of various notifications and circulars issued by respondent 2 (MCI) to practicing doctors in this regard and even after launching of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushdhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) by respondent 1 (Centre), the respondents have .

Copycat fungus deactivates body's response to infection

Fungus can imitate signals from the immune system and prevent our body from responding to infection, scientists have found. Life-threatening fungal infection is a major killer of people with immune system problems such as blood cancers, HIV infection or following organ transplant. The study, published in the journal PLoS Pathogens, focused on one of the most dangerous infections for people with HIV/AIDS --Cryptococcus neoformans -- which causes hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide every year, scientists said in a statement. Fungi are known to make molecules similar to those of our own immune system, but why fungi make these molecules and what their function is has been a longstanding mystery. Scientists from the University of Sheffield in the UK, have identified how specific immune signals called prostaglandins, made by fungi, are able to disarm immune cells. The team found that fungi which are not able to make these signals were less able to grow during infection. "We've ...

Doctors still avoid serving in rural areas, rues HC

The Madras High Court has observed that even after 70 years of independence, doctors continue to avoid serving in rural areas and several methods tried out by the government to convince them have proved futile. Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana made the observation while disposing of a batch of pleas moved by service candidates, seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to declare their areas also as remote and difficult. The court, which refused to interfere in the ranklist released by the government for the 2019-20 academic year, directed the state to revisit the government order, declaring such areas as remote and difficult, based on objections made for the next academic year in the interest of PG course aspirants. The court noted that though India has developed and modified health care in rural areas by setting up Primary Health Centres, many were without doctors or manned by nurses and paramedical staff or had one doctor and paramedical staff. From these PHCs, patients are ...

Smoking during pregnancy linked to increased risk of offspring obesity

Mothers-to-be, take note! New research has linked smoking during pregnancy with an increased risk of offspring obesity. The research, published in the Journal Experimental Physiology, identified a potential cellular mechanism that connects smoking during pregnancy with an increased risk of baby obesity later in life.Obesity is considered an epidemic in the United States, with nearly 35 per cent of adults and 20 per cent of children between six to 19 years of age deemed obese.Obesity is a serious economic burden as well: more than USD 150 billion is spent annually on obesity-related healthcare costs in the U.S. alone."It has been consistently shown that mothers who smoke during pregnancy increased the risk of obesity to their baby, but the mechanisms responsible for this increased risk are not well understood," said the study's principal investigator Kevin Pearson."These data mark a first step towards defining those mechanisms with an eye toward potential interventions in the longer ...

Exercise more critical than diet to maintain weight loss: Study

A recent study has suggested that instead of focusing on diet, the trick to ensure one doesn't gain those extra ounces is to make regular physical activity a part of his/her routine."This study addresses the difficult question of why so many people struggle to keep weight off over a long period. By providing evidence that a group of successful weight-loss maintainers engages in high levels of physical activity to prevent weight regain - rather than chronically restricting their energy intake - is a step forward to clarifying the relationship between exercise and weight-loss maintenance," said Danielle Ostendorf, lead author of the study. The findings reveal that successful weight-loss maintainers rely on physical activity to remain in energy balance (rather than chronic restriction of dietary intake) to avoid weight regain. In the study, successful weight-loss maintainers are individuals who maintain a reduced body weight of 30 pounds or more for over a year.Key findings of the study ...

Sexual satisfaction among older people about more than just health: Study

When it comes to sexual satisfaction among older people, communication, being in a happy relationship and health are important factors, a recent study suggests.Sexual expression is increasingly recognised as a significant character throughout the life course, in maintaining relationships, promoting self-esteem and contributing to health and well-being.Although healthcare professionals are being urged to be more proactive in helping older patients achieve a satisfying sex life, there is a distinct lack of evidence to help guide practitioners. The study looks at how health, lifestyle and relationship factors can affect sexual activity and satisfaction in later life, and examine how people respond and deal with the consequences. As part of the study, out of nearly 3,500 people aged between 55-74, the survey found that one in four men and one in six women reported having a health problem that affected their sex life. Among this group, women were less likely than men to be sexually active in

Vitamin C doses may shorten ICU stay: Study

Administering vitamin C to patients in intensive care unit (ICU) can help shorten their stay, scientists say. The researchers from University of Sydney in Australia and University of Helsinki in Finland, carried out a systematic review of vitamin C for ICU patients. They identified 18 relevant controlled trials, and 12 of them were included in the meta-analysis on the length of stay. On average, vitamin C administration shortened ICU stay by 7.8 per cent. In six trials, orally administered vitamin C with an average dose of 2 grams per day reduced the length of ICU stay on average by 8.6 per cent. "Vitamin C is a safe, low-cost essential nutrient. Given the consistent evidence from the trials published so far, vitamin C might be administered to ICU patients, although further studies are needed to find out optimal protocols for its administration," researchers said. "A few common cold studies have indicated that there may be a linear dose response for vitamin C on common cold duration ..

Poor lung function in shorter people increases risk of heart disease: Study

An association between shorter stature and higher risk of heart disease is mainly attributed to our lungs, a recent study suggests. As part of the study, researchers examined over 800 places in the human genome known to be associated with adult height and also evaluated data suggesting that lower height increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The authors found no evidence of a causal link between height and Type 2 diabetes risk once an individual's Body Mass Index was taken into account but reported a causal relationship between height and heart disease risk. Many traditional risk factors for heart disease were investigated including, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, fat percentage, and socio-economic parameters including education and income, but results showed that they only account for a very small part of the effect of height on heart disease risk. The way our lungs function accounted for most of this effect."Understanding the causal ...

Trauma makes children prone to gastrointestinal problem

Children suffering adversity in their early life are prone to gastrointestinal complaints which might affect their brain and behaviour later in life, claims a study. The study was published in the Journal 'Development and Psychopathology'."One common reason children show up at doctors' offices is intestinal complaints. Our findings indicate that gastrointestinal symptoms in young children could be a red flag to primary care physicians for future emotional health problems," said Nim Tottenham, senior author of the study.Earlier researches have shown that a past association with trauma ended up half of the adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The prevalence was twice as that of patients without IBS."The role of trauma in increasing vulnerability to both gastrointestinal and mental health symptoms is well established in adults but rarely studied in childhood," said study lead author Bridget Callaghan."Our study is among the first to link disruption of a child's gastrointestinal ...

Hundreds vaccinated after measles emergency in New York

A New York county which declared a state of emergency over a measles outbreak is on the "right path" after administering hundreds of vaccinations in two days, the chief of the US district said on Friday. Under the emergency, Rockland County banned non-vaccinated minors from public places in a bid to prevent the once-eliminated disease from spreading. Planned for 30 days from midnight Wednesday, the emergency comes during a US surge in measles cases, linked to an anti-vaccination movement. "We have already seen over 500 (new vaccinations) in the last couple of days," Rockland County Executive Ed Day said on CNBC TV. "People simply understand now that we are serious about this," added Day, whose district is 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of downtown New York. "We believe we are on a right path now to get at least a 93 percent immunization rate with the first shot," close to the level considered necessary to end the outbreak. Although measles was declared officially eliminated from the ..

Swine flu toll in Indore since January reaches 50

Five more patients, including a woman, have succumbed to swine flu here, taking the toll from the disease to 50 in the city since January 1, said a Madhya Pradesh health department officer Friday. The patients, aged between 48 and 57 years, died of swine flu (H1N1 virus) during the past three days at different hospitals in the city, he said. The deceased included one woman, the officer said. So far this year, 175 patients have tested positive for swine flu in city hospitals and of these 50 have succumbed to the deadly infection, he added. Swine flu is a viral, air-borne disease that spreads from person-to-person, through large droplets generated via coughing and sneezing, indirect contact by touching a contaminated object or surface (fomite transmission like telephone, cellphones, computers, door handles, door bells, pens, toys) and close contact (including hand shaking, hugging). Its main symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, difficulty in ...
