Heart attack or stroke may be an early sign of cancers, especially in older adults, say researchers.
Researchers have identified a set of neurons responsible for sustained pain and resulting pain-coping behaviours in mice. The findings by researchers at Harvard Medical School in the US point to the existence of separate neural pathways that regulate threat avoidance versus injury mitigation. The study, published in the journal Nature, can inform new ways to gauge the efficacy of candidate pain therapies by assessing behaviours stemming from different pathways. The study identified the nerve-signalling pathway behind the deep, sustained pain that sets in immediately following injury. The findings also shed light on the different pathways that drive reflexive withdrawal to avoid injury and the subsequent pain-coping responses. Clinical observations of patients with neurological damage together with past research have outlined the distinct brain regions that differentiate between the reflexive withdrawal from a skin prick, for example, and the long-lasting pain arising from tissue ...
Using fish skin to heal burns can be cheaper and less painful than bandages, says a scientist.
Cambridge scientists have built a virtual reality (VR) 3D model of cancer that allows viewers to 'fly' through tumour cells, observing every detail from different angles. The advance paves the way for better understanding cancer, and developing new treatments for it. The tumour sample, taken from a patient, can be studied in detail and from all angles, with each individual cell mapped. "No-one has examined the geography of a tumour in this level of detail before; it is a new way of looking at cancer," Greg Hannon, director of Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK), told the BBC. Researchers started with a one millimetre cubed piece of breast cancer tissue biopsy, containing around 100,000 cells. They cut wafer thin slices, an then stained them with markers to show their molecular make-up and DNA characteristics. The tumour was then rebuilt using virtual reality (VR), which allows multiple users from anywhere in the world to examine the tumour. Although the human tissue sample ..
Scientists have developed a unique anti-viral composition that can effectively provide protection against several influenza A viruses such as H1N1, H3N2, H5N1 and H7N9.
A 24-year-old pregnant woman from this district contracted HIV after receiving blood donated by an infected man, prompting the Tamil Nadu government to review the stocks in all blood banks of the state to ensure they were free of the deadly virus. An employee of a blood bank attached to a government hospital in Sattur, near here, has been dismissed, while two others have been suspended in connection with the incident, health department officials said on Wednesday. The state government said it was making all efforts to prevent the impact of the virus on the woman, and stocks in all blood banks would be reviewed to ensure that such incidents did not recur. Joint Director of Health Services, Virudhunagar, R Manoharan told PTI the woman was admitted to a private hospital in Sattur for the birth of her second child and the doctors advised her to have a blood transfusion citing haemoglobin deficiency. Blood brought from a blood bank was transfused to her. It later emerged that the donor was
Turns out, the drugs taken during the treatment of breast cancer have some side effects that impact the brain.Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the research established the common marmoset as an important non-human primate model for studying the effects of estrogen-reducing treatments on the nervous system.Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor used to prevent breast cancer recurrence, have side effects such as mood disturbances and memory issues in both humans and animals as it interferes with the production of estrogens. Little is known about how the drug impacts the brain.Although Researchers administered Letrozole to male and female marmosets via pudding for four weeks and observed many of the same behavioural changes, including hot flashes and increased anxiety. It also compromised the function of neurons in the hippocampus and impaired spatial memory.
British scientists have built a novel virtual reality (VR) 3D model of cancer that will help increase the understanding of cancer as well as in the search for new treatment.

Touted as the largest cancer hospital in India, the National Cancer Institute in Haryana's Jhajjar district would be opened to public by the third week of January, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said Tuesday. The institute, being considered as a landmark in the field of cancer research in the country, shall lessen the deficit of tertiary cancer care in the northern region. "The National Cancer Institute in Jhajjar would be dedicated by the third week of January," Nadda said at an event in AIIMS hospital in Delhi. The institute will have 710 beds, out of which 200 beds will be dedicated for translational research on India-specific cancers. Out patient department or OPD services were partially started last week. Different facilities such as surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, anaesthesia and palliative care and nuclear medicine will be available at the institute. It will also have the first-of-its-kind tissue repository in India. The institute, which will operate ...
Are you planning to use decorative glitter and dust on your Christmas cake? If so, take note. Some of them are not meant to be eaten, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned.
The brain anatomy is consistently shaped by socioeconomic status from childhood to early adulthood, a study has found. The findings, published in the journal JNeurosci, draws attention to the importance of preschool life as a period when associations between SES and brain organisation may first develop. Researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health in the US analysed brain scans of the same individuals collected over time between five and 25 years of age. Comparing this data to parental education and occupation and each participants' intelligence quotient (IQ) allowed the researchers to demonstrate positive associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and the size and surface area of brain regions involved in cognitive functions such as learning, language, and emotions. This is the first study to associate greater childhood SES with larger volumes of two subcortical regions -- the thalamus and striatum -- thereby extending previous SES research that has focused on its ...
