Do you feel guilty about late night snacking that can lead to weight gain? Switching to a protein-filled snack like cottage cheese may help, a study has found. Researchers at the Florida State University (FSU) in the US found that consuming 30 grammes of protein about 30 minutes before bed appears to have a positive effect on muscle quality, metabolism and overall health. In the study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, participants -- active young women in their early 20s -- ate samples of cottage cheese 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. Researchers specifically wanted to see if this food may have an impact on metabolic rate and muscle recovery. This is one of the first nutrition studies where participants consumed a whole food as opposed to a protein shake or some form of supplement, researchers said. "Until now, we presumed that whole foods would act similarly to the data on supplemental protein, but we had no real evidence," said Michael Ormsbee, an associate professor ..
The Delhi High Court Friday sought responses of the AAP government and the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute on a PIL alleging that the hospital has not provided free treatment to poor patients in the last two decades. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao issued notice to the Delhi government, the hospital and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and sought their stand by January 28, 2019 on the plea by an NGO. NGO Social Jurist in its plea, filed through advocate Ashok Aggarwal, has contended that the hospital was allotted land by DDA on concessional rates on the condition that it will provide free treatment to poor patients to the extent of 10 per cent in IPD and 25 per cent in OPD. Aggarwal told the bench that the high court in 2007 and the Supreme Court in July 2018 has said that hospitals allotted land on concessional rates have to provide free treatment to poor patients to the extent of 10 per cent in the In Patient Department (IPD) and 25 per cent in the Out

People suffering from acute kidney injury could be at more than a three-fold higher risk of developing dementia, finds a study.
As we age, we may develop certain disabilities that make it difficult to walk, climb, balance, or maintain our fine motor skills. In turn, these changes can affect our ability to perform routine, daily tasks. However, according to a new research, it is often possible to treat these difficulties before they lead to disability.A team of researchers examined information from a study called SHARE. It involved a survey of people aged 50 and older across most European Union countries and Israel every two years. This survey collected information about health, social and economic status, and participants' social and family networks.A total of 30,434 people participated in this survey. The research team who studied the information from SHARE published their findings in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. For example, having good muscle strength helps us maintain the ability to function well. Research suggests that a minimum level of strength is needed for good physical function. The

With Medvarsity's simulation training program for resident doctors, we are looking at bridging the gap in skills and also use the training program
Scientists have shown for the first time how antibiotics can predispose the gut to avoidable infections that trigger bowel disease in mice. The researchers from The University of Manchester in the UK also showed that substances derived from fibre prevent this damage to the gut, suggesting a high fibre diet could be useful when taken during and after a course of antibiotics. The study, which appears in the journal Science Translational Medicine, tested broad spectrum antibiotics on mice to assess their impact on the gut's microbiota, the community of microbes that live in the gastrointestinal tract. After a week long course of antibiotics, a harmful immune reaction started that lasted at least two months, an equivalent of many years in humans, said the researchers. The immune reaction meant that significantly fewer beneficial bacteria which make 'short chain fatty acids', which are good for the gut, grew back. However, short chain fatty acids, produced by the fermentation of dietary ...
Just a few drinks in an evening may change how memories are formed at the fundamental, molecular level, a study suggests. One of the many challenges with battling alcohol addiction and other substance abuse disorders is the risk of relapse, even after progress towards recovery, said researchers from Brown University in the US. Even pesky fruit flies have a hankering for alcohol, and because the molecular signals involved in forming flies' reward and avoidance memories are much the same as those in humans, they are a good model for study, they said. The study, published in the journal Neuron, in flies found that alcohol hijacks this memory formation pathway and changes the proteins expressed in the neurons, forming cravings. Researchers uncovered the molecular signalling pathways and changes in gene expression involved in making and maintaining reward memories. "One of the things I want to understand is why drugs of abuse can produce really rewarding memories when they're actually ...
A recent study has found that head and neck cancer survivors are at an increased risk of suicide. The Saint Louis University study concluded that head and neck cancer survivors are two times more likely to commit suicide than survivors of other cancers and four times more likely than the general population. The findings were published in the journal Cancer."This problem of suicide is bigger than many realise," said lead author Nosayaba Osazuwa-Peters. "But to think that it might be an even bigger problem among cancer survivors is staggering."More than 15.5 million individuals are living with a cancer diagnosis, and the number of cancer survivors is projected to be more than 20 million by 2026. Three percent of those diagnosed patients have head and neck cancer. However, surviving cancer comes at a cost, Osazuwa-Peters said. In the immediate aftermath of diagnosis and treatment, the need to survive often overtakes concerns about functionality and aesthetics. But approximately one-half of .
Weight loss surgery for obese women could prevent womb cancer, suggests a study. The research, led by University of Manchester and Salford Royal scientists, is published in the International journal of Cancer. The study found that the precancerous tissue - in the womb of women who had gastric sleeve or bypass surgery for obesity - reverted to normal tissue when they lost weight.Doctors have long known that womb cancer is caused by obesity, however, until now, the effect of losing weight on precancerous changes in the womb has been poorly studied.Seventy-two women with an average BMI of over 50 - considered to be super obese - had biopsies taken from their wombs during gastric sleeve or bypass surgery.Of the 72, four were found to have womb cancer, which was treated by hysterectomy. A further six patients had atypical endometrial hyperplasia, a precancerous condition that causes the overgrowth of cells in the womb.Of the six women with endometrial hyperplasia, three had no signs of the ..
According to the findings of a recent research, acute kidney injury (AKI) is linked with a higher risk of developing dementia. The findings will be presented at ASN Kidney Week 2018 at the San Diego Convention Center.AKI, an abrupt decline in kidney function, often arises after major surgeries or severe infections, and it is associated with long-term health problems including the development of chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. AKI is also associated with acute neurologic complications, but the long-term consequences of AKI on brain health are unclear. To study the issue, Jessica Kendrick of University of Colorado School of Medicine and her colleagues analysed information on 2082 patients without a prior history of dementia from an integrated health care delivery system in Utah. Patients had a hospital admission between 1999 and 2009.During a median follow-up time of 5.8 years, 97 patients developed dementia. More patients with AKI developed dementia (7.0 percent vs. ...
Less than two weeks before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump has announced a plan to lower prices for some prescription drugs, saying it would stop unfair practices that force Americans to pay much more than people in other countries for the same medications. "We are taking aim at the global freeloading that forces American consumers to subsidise lower prices in foreign countries through higher prices in our country," Trump said in a speech Thursday at the Department of Health and Human Services. "Same company. Same box. Same pill. Made in the exact same location, and you would go to some countries and it would be 20 per cent of the cost of what we pay," said Trump, who predicted the plan will save Americans billions. "We're fixing it." But consumers take note: The plan would not apply to medicines people buy at the pharmacy, just ones administered in a doctor's office, as are many cancer medications and drugs for immune system problems. Physician-administered drugs can be

India's focus on improved and strengthened primary and secondary health care services with stress on multiple sectors has yielded results not just in terms of positive health indicators but also in a robust health system, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said Thursday. He said this gives India the confidence to move from "selective to comprehensive" primary health care services. Noting that India is building a larger digital health ecosystem to help form electronic health records of citizens which is portable and universally accessible through a health information exchange, Nadda said this will ensure privacy and security of data. Nadda was speaking on the theme 'The Future of Primary Health Care' at the plenary session of '2nd International Conference on Primary Health Care (PHC) towards UHC and SDGs' at Astana in Kazakhstan. "The Union Health Minister said India has focused on improved primary health care services and established referral linkages including transport and strengthened
