A severe viral outbreak at a New Jersey rehabilitation center for "medically fragile children" has left six youngsters dead and 12 others sick, the state Health Department said Tuesday. There have been 18 cases of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of New York, the New Jersey Health Department said in a statement. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an email that it is providing technical assistance to the state. In the past 10 years, cases of severe illness and death from the type of infection found at the facility have been reported in the United States, said CDC spokeswoman Kate Fowlie in an email, though it's unclear how many deaths there have been. The strain afflicting the children is usually associated with acute respiratory illness, according to the CDC, which on its website instructs health workers to report unusual clusters to state or local health departments. Women's bodies undergo a "striking" change during a specific week of pregnancy that can significantly reduce their risk of developing breast cancer later in life, scientists said Tuesday. Previous research has highlighted how women under the age of 30 can reduce their risk of contracting breast cancer later in life by having a baby. But a new study by experts in Denmark and Norway claims to have identified the precise week of pregnancy when the change occurs. "If you deliver a child at week 33 you get the child, which is great, but you don't get the bonus of having a lower risk of breast cancer for the rest of your life," Mads Melbye, from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Clinical Medicine and lead study author, told AFP. "It's a very distinct change in risk when you go from week 33 to week 34." A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks and a baby born before 37 weeks is considered premature. Melbye and his team studied a huge database of nearly four million women in Denmark and .

: City-based drug-maker Laurus Labs Tuesday said it sold the US Food and Drug Administration-approved tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), used to treat hepatitis B virus, to CASI Pharmaceuticals Inc, USA. Discussions were on to allow Laurus to continue to manufacture and market the TDF in the US and to potentially supply abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) to China, a press release said here. Founder and chief executive officer of Laurus Lab Satyanarayana Chava said in the release that the transfer of TDF ANDA for its use in China enhances the strategic focus of the company to leverage on development and manufacturing capabilities in the markets where its presence was not strong. Partnering with CASI Pharmaceuticals would enable Laurus Labs monetise its assets in China while building a robust pipeline and commercialise quality drugs in other markets, he said in the release.
French health authorities said Tuesday they have approved the use of a muscle relaxant to help treat people addicted to alcohol. The ANSM national drug agency said it had cleared Baclofen, first developed in the 1970s, for alcoholism after a trial period that began in 2014, following years of off-label use in several countries. But officials warned that the drug could have harmful side-effects, and limited its dosage to 80 milligrammes per day, down from 300 milligrammes previously. Critics of the drug says its use to treat alcoholism has not been sufficiently proven, with some questioning the wisdom of trying to stop dependence on a product by replacing it with a pill. But a French drug oversight agency said last year that while Baclofen had not been definitively shown to be efficient in treating alcoholism, it had shown "clinical benefits in some patients". In its trial with 132 heavy drinkers, it found that 80 percent either became abstinent or turned into moderate drinkers. By ...

Breathing through the nose may improve the transfer of experience to long-term memory, according to a study. The finding, published in the journal JNeurosci, adds to the growing evidence for the influence of respiration on human perception and cognition. Building on previous research in animals and humans, Artin Arshamian from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and colleagues compared the effects of nose breathing and mouth breathing during a one-hour consolidation period after participants were exposed to various odours. Nose breathers, whose mouths were taped over during the consolidation period, showed increased odour recognition compared to mouth breathers, whose noses were clipped during consolidation. Although the study did not measure brain activity, the researchers suggest that nose breathing may facilitate communication between sensory and memory networks as memories are replayed and strengthened during consolidation. The study provides evidence that, in addition to its effects .
Children are spending more time in front of the screens and less time outdoors, even in rural areas, according to a study of middle-school students in the US. Researchers at North Carolina State University and Clemson University in the US found that gaps between screen time and outdoor time were most pronounced for girls, African American students, and eighth graders. "Middle school can be a turning point for many activities because priorities shift and young people's lives become more and more structured. This often results in fewer opportunities for outdoor recreation," said Lincoln Larson, an assistant professor at North Carolina State University. "This is a problem because connection to nature plays a positive role in young people's physical health and psychological development," Larson said. "We want to understand how recreation choices might influence youth at this formative time," said Edmond Bowers, an associate professor at Clemson University. Research on the impact of ...
