Scientists striving to discover what factors make us gay or straight believe the length of our index and ring fingers could provide a clue to our sexuality. Typically in women the index (second) and ring (fourth) fingers are of similar length, while in men there is a greater difference between the two, said researchers at the University of Essex in the UK. Previous research has uncovered a potential link between pre-natal hormone levels and differences in finger length, with those exposed to higher levels of 'male' hormone more likely to have 'male-typical' hands. Both men and women are exposed to the 'male' hormone testosterone in the womb, according to the study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour. The study of identical twins with different sexualities has discovered that not only is their sexuality different -- their hands are too. It looked at 18 sets of female twins and found on average the lesbian twin had more 'male-typical' hands than her straight ...

Children with developmental delays, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are up to 50 per cent more likely to be overweight or obese compared with the general population, according to a study. Among children with ASD, those with a higher degree of impairment and more severe symptoms were found to be at even greater risk of developing obesity by age five, said researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania in the US. The study, published in The Journal of Pediatrics, included nearly 2,500 children between the ages of two and five years old. This age group is especially relevant, since it is an important window for early obesity prevention, researchers said. The study analysed 668 children with ASD, 914 children with developmental delays or disorders and 884 children from the general population who served as controls. The study showed that children with ASD were 1.57 times more likely to be overweight or obese than the general ...
Scientists have created wearable electronic devices that can be easily attached to the skin to monitor physical activity and alert a wearer about possible health risks in real time. The "smart stickers" are made of cellulose, which is both biocompatible and breathable, according to the study published in the journal Advanced Materials and Interfaces. "For the first time, we have created wearable electronic devices that someone can easily attach to their skin and are made out of paper to lower the cost of personalised medicine," said Ramses Martinez, an assistant professor at Purdue University in the US. Health professionals could use the stickers as implantable sensors to monitor the sleep of patients because they conform to internal organs without causing any adverse reactions, researchers said. Athletes could also use the technology to monitor their health while exercising and swimming, they said. These stickers are patterned in serpentine shapes to make the devices as thin and ...
A combination of probiotics and antibiotics could eradicate two strains of drug-resistant bacteria that often infect wounds.According to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, if the probiotic/antibiotic combination is shown to be successful in future tests in animals and humans, it could be incorporated into dressings for wounds, where it could help heal infected chronic wounds. The study was published in Advanced Materials."There are so many bacteria now that are resistant to antibiotics, which is a serious problem for human health. We think one way to treat them is by encapsulating a live probiotic and letting it do its job," said Ana Jaklenec. The human body contains trillions of bacterial cells, many of which are beneficial. In some cases, these bacteria help fend off infection by secreting antimicrobial peptides and other compounds that kill pathogenic strains of bacteria. Others outcompete harmful strains by taking up nutrients and other critical ...

A drug first identified 150 years ago and used as a smooth-muscle relaxant could make tumours more sensitive to radiation therapy, according to a study. Researchers from Ohio State University (OSU) in the US found that the drug called papaverine, inhibits the respiration of mitochondria, the oxygen-consuming and energy-making components of cells, and sensitises model tumours to radiation. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the drug does not affect the radiation sensitivity of well-oxygenated normal tissues. The researchers showed that modifying the papaverine molecule might improve the safety of the molecule and could represent a new class of radiosensitising drugs that have fewer side effects. "We know that hypoxia (deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues) limits the effectiveness of radiation therapy, and that's a serious clinical problem because more than half of all people with cancer receive radiation ...
