Scientists have developed colour-changing contact lenses that can deliver drugs and monitor eye treatments. Researchers from China Pharmaceutical University and Southeast University in China sought to create a drug-delivering contact lens that would change colour as the medication is released into the eye. According to the study published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, the lens could control and indicate the sustained release of many ophthalmic drugs. It is difficult to known how much medication is actually getting to the eye, when eye drops and ointments are administered. This is because the eyes tend to reject foreign elements, and tears start rapidly start flowing when something goes into the eye. While this process is usually helpful for avoiding infection and damage from foreign objects, it can hinder the uptake of much-needed medications. Contact lenses may be a more effective way to deliver drugs directly to the eye, but real-time monitoring of drug ...
Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a novel synthetic DNA vaccine against Ebola which they say is safe and offers a long-term protection from the virus. Using a unique approach, researchers at The Wistar Institute in the US, designed optimised synthetic DNA vaccine candidates targeting a virus surface protein called glycoprotein. They demonstrated efficacy of the novel vaccine candidates and durability of the immune responses in animal models. Results, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, showed strong immune responses one year after the last dose, supporting the long-term immunogenicity of the vaccine -- a particularly challenging area for Ebola vaccines. "The success of intradermal delivery of a low-dose regimen is very encouraging. The ultimate goal of our work is to create effective and safe vaccines that are optimised for field use in at-risk areas," said Ami Patel from The Wistar Institute. The researchers optimised a shorter, dose-sparing, ...
US President Donald Trump has alleged that foreign countries extort lower prices from US drug-makers for their citizens, as he signed two pieces of legislation into law that aim to inform consumers about drug prices. Both measures, the Know the Lowest Price Act and the Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act, aim to end the drug industry's so-called gag orders of pharmacists, which prevent them from discussing cheaper price options with consumers. These price options include discussing whether a medication may be less expensive if using insurance or paying out-of-pocket. "I have directed my administration to confront the global freeloading of US taxpayers. Foreign countries extort lower prices from US drug-makers for their citizens, subsidized by higher cost prices for American citizens, Trump said at the White House, without mentioning the names of the nations. "All research and development and everything is borne by our country, and other countries are not asked to, you know, pick up .
Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have found that the novel synthetic DNA vaccine is safe against Ebola virus and offers a long-term alternative to traditional vaccines.

Researchers say they have designed the first-ever vaccine to deliver a one-two-three punch against the main causes of traveller's diarrhoea. The approach could help save lives in developing countries, where it's estimated that three common pathogens kill over 100,000 children under the age of five each year, according to the research published in the journal Vaccine. The vaccine designed by Mario Monteiro from the University of Guelph in Canada combines proteins from pathogenic E coli with sugars from Shigella and Campylobacter jejuni. All three bugs are major causes of bacterial diarrhoea globally. In tests with mice, the vaccine provided immunity against all three pathogens, researchers said. No licensed vaccines exist against any of these pathogens, they said. A sugar-based vaccine developed by Monteiro earlier against campylobacter alone is currently undergoing human trials but is still an estimated decade away from potential release. He said this new three-in-one approach may ...
In a first, researchers have developed a vaccine for the three main pathogens that cause traveller's diarrhoea and deaths of children in developing countries, where it is estimated that these three common pathogens kill more than one lakh children under age five each year.
Chewing gum can be effective at delivering some vitamins to the body, according to scientists who suggest that the habit could be a strategy to help reduce the epidemic of vitamin deficiency around the world. For the first time, researchers closely scrutinised vitamin delivery from chewing gum. "I was slightly surprised that no one had done a study like this before given the number of supplement-containing gum products on the market," said Joshua Lambert, a professor at Pennsylvania State University in the US. "But there is no requirement that nutritional gums be tested for efficacy, since they fall into the category of dietary supplements," said Lambert. To find out if supplemented gum contributes vitamins to chewers' bodies, researchers had 15 people chew two off-the-shelf supplemented gums and measured the levels of eight vitamins released into their saliva. In a separate experiment on the same subjects, the researchers measured the levels of seven vitamins in their plasma. The ...
Concept Medical Inc. has approached the FDA for an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for their Sirolimus-Coated Balloon (DCB).To support this process, they have raised Rs. 440 crores (for an undisclosed valuation) from cardiologist and serial entrepreneur Dr. Kiran Patel (Tampa, Florida). According to a new research, the amino acid called alanine may provide a brief lowering of glucose levels by altering energy metabolism in cells.Type 2 diabetes is driven by many metabolic pathways, with some pathways driven by amino acids, the molecular building blocks for proteins."Our study shows that it's possible we can use specific nutrients, in this case, amino acids, to change metabolism in a cell, and these changes in metabolism can change how cells take up and release glucose in a beneficial way," said study author Mary-Elizabeth Patti. The study was recently published in the Journal of Molecular Metabolism.Performed in cells and in mice, her group's research began with an attempt to see what nutrients might activate a key protein called AMP kinase (AMPK)."AMPK is an enzyme in cells throughout the body that is activated when nutrient supplies are low, or in response to exercise. AMPK then causes a lot of beneficial changes in the cell, turning on genes that serve to increase

On the occasion of World Obesity Day, she also urged others to help in raising the awareness level of the people about the "prevalence, severity and diversity of the stigma about weight." On #WorldObesityDay2018 let us raise awareness about the prevalence, severity and diversity of the stigma about weight. The media must play a crucial role in this regard, Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle today. The World Obesity Federation, this year, has called upon the people to end the stigma associated with obesity besides urging the media to stop using stigmatising language and imagery against obese people. Instead it should portray obesity in a fair, accurate and informative manner.

Turns out, higher levels of biomarkers of dairy fat consumption are associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a new study has revealed. The study, published in PLOS Medicine, was undertaken by an international consortium led by scientists at the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge, and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.International nutritional guidelines commonly recommend regular consumption of dairy products as an important source of key nutrients, and in high-income countries, eating low-fat dairy products is encouraged as part of overall recommendations to limit saturated fat consumption. In some researches, consumption of dairy products, in particular, yogurt and cheese, has been associated with a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes.Biomarkers are tell-tale molecules in the body that can be measured accurately and consistently, and act as indicators of dietary consumption.Concentrations in body
According to a recent study, a mother's weight during early pregnancy may affect how well her baby is able to self-regulate during its first months and years of life. The research suggested that there is a one in five chance that overweight or obese women will have babies who suffer from multiple regulatory problems, and these babies may also show a delay in some developmental milestones when they reach childhood.Previous research has found that one in every five infants struggles to self-regulate in the first year of life. This means that these babies may cry excessively, have problems feeding or difficulties falling asleep unless soothed by a caregiver. As they grow older, such children often show behavioural and neurodevelopmental problems such as hyperactivity or difficulties concentrating, as well as having poorer muscle function. Some have lower IQs or are placed on the autism spectrum. As part of the study, researchers drew on data from 3,117 women from different Finnish towns ...
