Amid reports of "faulty" hip replacements surgeries by multinational company Johnson and Johnson, the Union Health Ministry has decided to form committees at the state levels so that they can receive such complaints from affected patients. The move comes after reports appeared in the media, saying the pharma giant "suppressed" facts on the harm of surgeries afterwards which was conducted on patients in India using "faulty" hip replacement systems. According to reports, the expert committee, set up to investigate complaints about hip implant devices also has suggested that the company pay compensation of around Rs 20 lakh to the affected patients. Union Ministers J P Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan today laid the foundation for establishment of a satellite campus of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar at Samalpur near Balasore town. "A 300 bedded multispecialty hospital will be established over 24.91 acres of land, as a satellite centre for AIIMS multi-speciality," Nadda, the Union Health Minister said at a meeting after laying the foundation stone. He said the construction of OPD Building and two blocks of Staff Quarters (Phase-I) is expected to be completed within 15 months with the project cost of Rs 35.76 crore. Women seeking to end early pregnancies in England soon will be allowed to take an abortion pill at home under a new government plan set to take effect by the end of the year.
