Hypertension is a common complication seen in pregnancy and a leading cause of maternal and foetal morbidity.Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) include chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia (de novo or superimposed on chronic hypertension) and white coat hypertension.HDP's create a hostile environment in the uterus as a result of multiple pathophysiological changes including reduced placental blood flow, maternal inflammation, and oxidative stress."These changes can potentially alter foetal development, which may increase the risk of long-term vascular, cognitive and psychiatric complications in the newborn child. HDP has been linked to an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders including ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), " said Dr. Alka Gupta, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, La Femme, Shalimar Bagh. The signs of autism spectrum disorder include problems in 2 key areas - social ...
Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities like autism and Down syndrome have nearly double the rate of having another baby within a year of delivering compared to women without such disabilities, indicating a lack of access to reproductive planning, a new study has found.
Cardiologists have noted that the incidence of coronary artery compression in children fitted with epicardial pacemakers may be more common than previously believed.Children who require pacemakers or defibrillators often need to have wires placed on the outside of their heart due to their size or unique anatomy. In rare instances, these wires can place the child at risk for "cardiac strangulation," which can lead to compression of the heart muscle and coronary arteries (the blood vessels that feed the heart) over time.Lead investigator Douglas Y. Mah, said, "Coronary artery compression is thought to be rare. Its true incidence, however, may be higher than we believed either due to a lack of awareness or lack of reporting in the literature."The sudden death of a child with an epicardial pacemaker following coronary artery compression prompted investigators to enhance surveillance of all patients with epicardial pacing or defibrillation systems. After reviewing the records of all ...
Initiation of potentially inappropriate medication is associated with a higher risk of fractures and mortality, according to a new study. It was found that the initiation of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) is associated with a higher risk of fracture-specific hospitalisations and mortality. Initiation of a PIM is also associated with higher hospital costs. The study was conducted on the basis of collaboration between the University of Eastern Finland, Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) and The Social Insurance Institution of Finland.PIMs are defined as medications which have potential risks higher than their clinical benefits. In this study, PIMs were defined according to the Meds75+ database maintained by the Fimea. The study also indicated that the risk of fracture-specific hospitalisations and mortality is higher when initiating PIMs. Previous studies conducted in Europe have not investigated hospital costs associated with PIM use with as long a follow-up as this study.PIM ...

Turns out, women having both intellectual and developmental disabilities have higher chances of having a baby within a year as compared to the ones without such disabilities.According to a new study, rapid repeat pregnancy within one year of a previous live birth is associated with smaller babies, preterm birth, neonatal death and other adverse effects. It also indicates a lack of access to reproductive health care, such as pregnancy planning and contraception.About one in 100 adults have an intellectual or developmental disability, such as autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome and other nonspecific conditions that cause intellectual and developmental limitations.Lead author of the study, Hilary Brown said, "Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities are more likely than those without such disabilities to be young and disadvantaged in each marker of social, health, and health care disparities. They experience high rates of poverty and chronic ...
Children could be unintended victims of workplace incivility, say scientists who found that women who encounter rude coworkers are more likely to engage in stricter parenting practices, negatively affecting their kids. Workplace incivility is any behaviour that is rude, disrespectful, impolite or otherwise violates workplace norms of respect. This behaviour shows a lack of concern for others, said Kathryne Dupre, of Carleton University in Canada. Some examples of workplace incivility include ignoring or making derogatory remarks about someone, taking credit for the work of others, passing blame for your own mistakes, avoiding someone or shutting people out of a network or team. To better understand the effects of workplace incivility spill-over at home, the researchers conducted an online survey of 146 working mothers and their spouses. Mothers were asked about their experience with incivility in the workplace as well as feelings of effectiveness as a parent. Their spouses were asked .

An affordable, globally available drug - low-dose aspirin - could help prevent HIV transmission, scientists say. HIV infection rates remain unacceptably high, especially among young African women. Researchers including those from University of Manitoba in Canada tested the effect of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or aspirin) and other anti-inflammatory drugs on HIV target cells in a group of Kenyan women who were at low risk for HIV. The pilot study, published in the Journal of the International AIDS Society, built on existing knowledge about the role of inflammation in HIV transmission. Transmission of the virus requires a susceptible target cell in the human host. Activated immune cells are more susceptible to HIV infection than resting cells. It is known that inflammation brings activated HIV target cells to the female genital tract. The researchers found that Aspirin was the most effective anti-inflammatory drug. It reduced the number of HIV target cells in the female genital tract by .
MIT researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can help reduce toxic chemotherapy dosing for the most aggressive form of brain cancer, potentially improving the quality of life for patients. Glioblastoma is a malignant tumour that appears in the brain or spinal cord, and prognosis for adults is no more than five years. Patients must endure a combination of radiation therapy and multiple drugs taken every month. Medical professionals generally administer maximum safe drug doses to shrink the tumour as much as possible. However, these strong pharmaceuticals still cause debilitating side effects in patients. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US detail a model that could make dosing regimens less toxic but still effective. Powered by a "self-learning" machine-learning technique, the model looks at treatment regimens currently in use, and iteratively adjusts the doses. Eventually, it finds an optimal treatment plan, with the lowest ...
