World Hepatitis Day: Regular screening of liver a must

Hepatitis is widespread in India, standing fourth among 11 countries which carry almost 50 per cent of the global burden of chronic hepatitis.Globally every year 1.4 million people die from hepatitis, which can be transmitted from the mother to baby, via sexual contact or upon contact with infected blood.Inflammation of the liver (commonly known as hepatitis) can result from viral infection and as all the symptoms are nearly close enough, without a diagnostic test, it is impossible to differentiate.Lack of regular checkup and diagnosis is the prime reason for being undetected. Globally around 400 million people are infected with the hepatitis B virus in the world today and a prime reason for it is liver failure and cancer. As the function of the liver is to help in digestion by producing proteins, enzymes, and other substances, clear toxins from the body, any abnormality in the production of the components is a serious indication of an ailment that the liver is not functioning well."In

Portfolio diet can lowers heart disease risk

Turns out, portfolio diet, a plant-based way of eating , reduces risk factors for cardiovascular disease including blood pressure, triglycerides, and inflammation.University of Toronto researchers stated that in addition to reducing LDL (or 'bad') cholesterol by about 30 per cent when combined with a low-saturated fat diet, the researchers found the diet limited other factors for an estimated 13 per cent reduction in the overall risk for coronary heart disease, which includes angina and heart attack.Associate professor, John Sievenpiper said, "We've known the portfolio diet lowers LDL cholesterol, but we didn't have a clear picture of what else it could do. This study allows for greater clarity and certainty about the effects of the diet and its health potential."The portfolio diet has four main components.Based on a 2,000 calorie diet, it includes 45 grams of nuts, or about a handful; 50 grams of plant protein such as soy, or pulses like beans and peas; 20 grams of viscous soluble ...

Genetic factors may increase liver damage risk in chronic hepatitis B patients

Genetic variations may increase the risk of severe liver damage in Caucasians with chronic hepatitis B infection, a new study has found.Approximately one-third of the world's population has come into contact with hepatitis B, with 350-400 million people developing a chronic infection. If left untreated, chronic infections can lead to liver injury, liver cancer, and liver failure, with more than one million deaths attributed to cirrhosis and cancer each year.Researchers from the Westmead Institute for Medical Research found that Caucasian patients with a variation in their STAT4 gene were more likely to experience inflammation and severe liver fibrosis.Author of the study, Dr. Rasha El Sharkawy said,"The findings add to the growing body of evidence that demonstrates a link between genes and the progression of hepatitis B.""The progression of liver injury in hepatitis B can vary significantly among patients, which indicates that genetic factors may play a role," she added. The STAT4 gene .

Diabetes drugs help immune cells in controlling inflammation

Diabetes drugs act as a powerful curb for immune cells in controlling inflammation, a new study has found. When tissues are damaged, one of the body's first inflammatory immune-system responders are macrophages, cells which are commonly thought of as 'construction workers' that clear away damaged tissue debris and initiate repair. However, prolonged inflammation promotes the progression of many diseases, including obesity. Now, a common class of drugs used to treat diabetes has been found to exert a powerful check on macrophages by controlling the metabolic fuel they use to generate energy.Keeping macrophages from going overboard on the job may inhibit the onset of obesity and diabetes following tissue inflammation. The study led by Mitchell Lazar, MD, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, mentioned Overnutrition, an excess intake of calories which can lead to obesity, causes a buildup of fat that can significantly damage tissues."When this happens, macrophages ...
