Immunity protein at birth reduces childhood malaria risk: Study

Babies born with high levels of an immune-related protein in their blood cells are less likely to develop malaria throughout their early childhood, a study has found. The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, screened a number of immunity proteins, known as cytokines, at birth and investigated whether these small proteins provided protection against malaria for newborn babies. Childhood malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality resulting in 500,000 deaths annually, and with more than 90 per cent of malaria infections occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. "We found that newborn babies born with a high level of a certain type of cytokine, known as IL-12, in their umbilical cord blood had a higher resistance to the development of malaria in the first two years of their life," said Yong Song from Curtin University in Australia. Find the missing millions: India against chronic viral hepatitis

Viral hepatitis is a leading cause of death worldwide (1.46 million deaths, a toll higher than that from HIV, tuberculosis or malaria, and on the increase since 1990).More than 90 percent of this burden is due to the sequelae of liver infections with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). The liver is a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood, and fights infections. When the liver is inflamed or damaged, its function can be affected. Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, and certain medical conditions can cause hepatitis. However, hepatitis is most often caused by a virus.Worldwide, mortality attributed to viral hepatitis has increased by 22 percent since 2000 despite decline in deaths caused by other infectious diseases, including HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that in 2015, viral hepatitis was responsible for 1.34 million deaths per year2. In 2016, in light of the public health burden of viral ...

Urgent action needed to find, treat millions suffering from viral hepatitis: WHO

Millions of people in WHO's South-East Asia Region, which includes India, are infected with viral hepatitis without knowing and do not receive treatment, the global health body said today, and asserted that urgent action is needed to find, test and treat them. On the eve of World Hepatitis Day, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh said it is estimated that less than one in 10 people infected with hepatitis, both worldwide and in the region, know whether they are affected by the condition, while less than 10 per cent of those who do know receive appropriate treatment. "This lack of awareness and treatment lead to progressive liver damage and can cause life-threatening conditions such as fibrosis and liver cancer, resulting in an estimated 4,10,000 deaths in the region every year. "It also allows viral hepatitis to spread. Region-wide, an estimated 40 million people live with chronic hepatitis B while an estimated 10 million live with chronic hepatitis C,"

In a review published in the journal The Nurse Practitioner, six studies showed positive effects of mindfulness approaches for teens with anxiety, including school-based programmes in high-risk populations. Yoga is one of the most popular mind-body therapies, with positive physical and mental effects including reduced anxiety, according to the researchers. Five studies, including four randomised trials, found positive effects of yoga in school settings, they said.
