Scientists are developing an eye drop that could revolutionise the treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the developed world. It is estimated that, by 2020, there will be about 200 million people worldwide with the condition, according to researchers at the University of Birmingham in the UK. AMD is currently treated by injections of sight-saving drugs into the eye which must be administered by medical professionals. Now, scientists have invented a method of delivering these otherwise-injected drug as eye drops. The scientists investigated the effect of the eye drops in the eyes of rabbits and pigs, which are more similar to human eyes. Their study, published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS), demonstrates that the eye drops can deliver a therapeutically effective amount of the drugs to the retina of the larger mammalian eye. Researchers found that in the 1,018-patient analysis, those participants who drank one or more 12-ounce serving of artificially sweetened beverages per day experienced a 46 per cent lower risk of cancer recurrence or death, compared to those who didn't drink these beverages. These "soft drinks" were defined as caffeinated colas, caffeine-free colas, and other carbonated beverages (such as diet ginger ale). A

Mobile phone radiation may affect memory performance in adolescents, according to a new study. The rapid evolution of information and communication technologies (ICT) goes along with an increase in exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in our daily life. The most relevant exposure source to the brain is the use of a mobile phone close to the head.-Media usage and brain exposure in young adultsThe study found that cumulative RF-EMF brain exposure from mobile phone use over one year may have a negative effect on the development of figural memory performance in adolescents, confirming prior results published in 2015.
