When resident physicians visit the homes of their former hospital patients they are in a better position to assess their needs. These doctors are also able to better understand the important role that community services and agencies play in keeping them at home and out of the hospital.According to a recent study, resident physicians, commonly known as residents, often develop the discharge plans as part of their training programs. Typically they don't make a home visit after discharge to assess if the plan worked and many never see their patients again."After visiting the home, the residents were better able to understand what makes for a good hospital discharge of an older patient," explained a researcher Megan Young."By being able to go into the patient's home and see what services patients need (home-delivered meals, grab bars in the shower, medication delivery systems), we as doctors are able to provide more comprehensive care plans that allow community-dwelling older adults to ...

Regular physical activity may reduce the risk of heart attack, even in areas with moderate-to-high levels of traffic pollution, a study claims. "While exercise is known to reduce cardiovascular disease risk; pollution can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease," said Nadine Kubesch from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. "Currently there is little data on whether poor air quality cancels out the protective benefits of physical activity in preventing heart attacks," said Kubesch, lead author of the study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers in Denmark, Germany and Spain evaluated outdoor physical activity levels (sports, cycling, walking and gardening) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2 pollutant generated by traffic) exposure in 51,868 adults, aged 50-65. Over a 17.7-year period, there were 2,936 first heart attacks and 324 recurrent heart attacks. Higher levels of pollution were

Australian scientists today said they have developed the world's first blood test capable of detecting melanoma in its early stages, a breakthrough that may save thousands of lives, as well as millions of dollars for the healthcare system. The new blood test could provide doctors with a powerful new tool to detect melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, before it spreads throughout the body, said researchers at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Australia. In a trial involving 105 people with melanoma and 104 healthy controls, the blood test was able to detect early stage melanoma in 79 per cent of cases. "Patients who have their melanoma detected in its early stage have a five year survival rate between 90 and 99 per cent, whereas if it is not caught early and it spreads around the body, the five year survival rate drops to less than 50 per cent," said Pauline Zaenker, who led the research published in the journal Oncotarget. "This is what makes this blood test so exciting as .

Nearly 40 per cent of people have a first memory which is fictional, say researchers who conducted one of the largest surveys of people's earliest memories. Current research indicates that people's first memories date from around three to three-and-a-half years of age. Researchers, including those from City, University of London, and Nottingham Trent University in the UK, found that 38.6 per cent of 6,641 survey participants claimed to have memories from two or younger, with 893 people claiming memories from one or younger. This was particularly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults, according to the study published in the journal Psychological Science. "We suggest that what a rememberer has in mind when recalling fictional improbably early memories is an episodic-memory - like mental representation consisting of remembered fragments of early experience and some facts or knowledge about their own infancy," said Shazia Akhtar from the University of Bradford in the UK.
