Pre-eclampsia is a hypertensive disorder characterised by the presence of high-blood pressure and high protein levels in the urine (proteinuria) during pregnancy.According to data collected by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) shows that pregnancy-induced high blood which is responsible for 12% of maternal deaths in India, is the leading cause of maternal mortalityThe first symptoms of Preeclampsia include high blood pressure and a high level of protein in the urine. Preeclamptic women also often have swelling in the feet, legs, and hands. This condition is said to appear during the second half of pregnancy, often in the latter part of the second or early third trimesters. However, it can occur earlier too.If this condition goes unnoticed, preeclampsia can lead to a more complicated condition called eclampsia that can put the mother and baby's life at risk. In rare cases, preeclampsia can cause death. Women with preeclampsia who have seizures ...
Cell therapy, a known panacea for several medical conditions-- liver cirrhosis, diabetes, PCOD and autoimmune diseases -- has added early menopause to the list of things it can possibly set right. In a breakthrough treatment, cell therapy has reversed early menopause in several women, giving hope that they may be able to regain their fertility and even bear children. It has also eliminated their need for hormone replacement therapy (HRT).In one case, a 38-year-school teacher's ovaries which had prematurely stopped functioning were "rejuvenated" with cells extracted from her bone marrow (repokraft). The researcher extracted a sample from the woman's bone marrow and isolated about 5ml of cells. These were then injected into the patient's ovary. Once in the ovary, the cells stimulated the organ by pumping out growth factors and other chemicals.Six months down the line the "menopausal woman" started getting her periods again."It is hoped that the technique can be developed into a female ...
Platypus milk has emerged as an unlikely hero in saving lives, a new study has revealed.According to a research led by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Oganisation (CSIRO) Australia, platypus milk acts as a hero in the global fight against antibiotic resistance.Due to its unique features - duck-billed, egg-laying, beaver-tailed and venomous- the platypus has long exerted a powerful appeal to scientists, making it an important subject in the study of evolutionary biology. In 2010, scientists discovered that platypus milk contained unique antibacterial properties that could be used to fight superbugs. Now a team of researchers at Australia's national research agency, the CSIRO, and Deakin University have solved a puzzle that help explaining why platypus milk is so potent - bringing it one step closer to being used to save lives. The discovery was made by replicating a special protein contained in platypus milk in a laboratory setting."Platypus are such weird animals that it .

Chinese scientists have developed an artificial heart using rocket technology and it is currently undergoing testing after thorough experiments on animals, a media report said today. The heart was developed jointly by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) and the Teda International Cardiovascular Hospital in North China's Tianjin. The artificial heart has been sent for testing and inspection after thorough experiments on animals, Science and Technology Daily reported, citing Li Hong, former director of CALT from the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. The artificial heart uses magnetic and fluid levitation from a rocket system, and the "aerospace heart" is expected to move to clinical trials during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), state-run Global Times reported. "The magnetic and fluid levitation technology can reduce the friction in the device to increase the working efficiency and extend the life span of the power generator," the report

Eating disorders may go undiagnosed in men and people of colour, depriving them of getting proper health care, a study has found. In a survey of college-age students, researchers from the University of Michigan in the US found great disparities in who was getting both diagnosis and treatment for eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorder and overconsumption. "While many people assume that eating disorders affect 'skinny, white, affluent girls,' we found that among college students with eating disorders, just two per cent were underweight, most were not affluent, and a sizeable portion were male and nonwhite," said Kendrin Sonneville, assistant professor at University of Michigan. "We also found that stereotypes about who develops eating disorders could contribute to disparities in diagnosis and treatment, with males, those of higher weight, people of colour, and the non affluent most likely to be slipping through the cracks," said Sonneville. Mindfulness meditation can help reduce major depression and alleviate its symptoms, a study has found. Researchers from University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong found that for patients with subthreshold depression who have not had a major depressive episode in the past six months, mindfulness training is a feasible method of preventing major depression. In the study, 116 adults with subthreshold depression who received the usual care with no psychological intervention were compared to 115 people who received mindfulness training. Intervention participants were invited to attend weekly two-hour mindfulness training sessions for eight consecutive weeks. At 12 months, there was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of major depressive disorder between groups (11 percent in the mindfulness group compared to 27 percent in usual care). Mindfulness training also had a small effect in reducing depression symptoms. Other secondary outcomes demonstrated no ..
