Writer Apurva Asrani today revealed that he is suffering from Bell's Palsy, a type of facial paralysis that results in an inability to control the muscles on the affected side. In a lengthy Facebook post, the 39-year-old scriptwriter said that he has been "unable to smile" for around two months. "Almost two months ago, I woke up with the right side of my face completely paralysed. Fearing a stroke, I was rushed to the hospital, and after an MRI ruled that out, my condition was diagnosed as Bell's Palsy - where the facial nerve is inflamed, causing loss of muscle movement... "I have been unable to smile. To shut the right eye. To walk without falling, to eat or even drink water without spillage. My face drooped to one side, one eye wide and unblinking, and my mouth twisted. I realised how blessed I had been to be able to smile," Apurva wrote. The "Shahid" scribe said he faced a lot of stress last year which is "a major factor" responsible for his present condition. Apurva elaborated ...
Wearing a helmet may significantly reduce the risk of cervical spine injury during motorcycle crashes, a study has found. Despite claims that helmets do not protect the cervical spine during a motorcycle crash and may even increase the risk of injury, researchers found that, helmet use lowers the likelihood of cervical spine injury (CSI), particularly fractures of the cervical vertebrae. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in the US reviewed the charts of 1,061 patients who had been injured in motorcycle crashes and treated at a trauma centre in Wisconsin between January 1, 2010, and January 1, 2015. Of those patients, 323 (30.4 per cent) were wearing helmets at the time of the crash and 738 (69.6 per cent) were not, according to the study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine. Wisconsin law does not require all riders to wear a helmet. At least one CSI was sustained by 7.4 per cent of the riders wearing a helmet and 15.4 per cent of those not .

Moderate blood sugar levels are recommended for patients with Type 2 diabetes, as per a new research.Conducted by the American College of Physicians, the evidence-based guidance study stated that Patients with Type 2 diabetes should be treated to achieve an A1C between 7 percent and 8 percent rather than 6.5 percent to 7 percent. An A1C test measures a person's average blood sugar level over the past two or three months. An A1C of 6.5 percent indicates diabetes."ACP's analysis of the evidence behind existing guidelines found that treatment with drugs to targets of 7 percent or less compared to targets of about 8 percent did not reduce deaths or macrovascular complications such as heart attack or stroke but did result in substantial harms," said researcher Jack Ende."The evidence shows that for most people with type 2 diabetes, achieving an A1C between 7 percent and 8 percent will best balance long-term benefits with harms such as low blood sugar, medication burden, and costs."ACP ...
Researchers, including one of Indian origin, have identified a gene responsible for neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, an advance that may lead to better treatments. "Our studies reveal that in complex brain disorders that have a loss of many genes, a single deleted gene is sufficient to cause symptoms for the patients," said Karun Singh from McMaster University in Canada. "This is exciting because it focuses our research effort on the individual gene, saving us time and money as it will speed up the development of targeted therapeutics to this gene alone," said Singh, co-author of the study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. Many neurodevelopmental disorders are caused by large missing pieces of genetic material in a person's genome that contain several genes, termed a 'microdeletion'. Accurately diagnosing a gene microdeletion helps doctors to predict patient outcome and to determine if a new treatment is available. The researchers used genetically engineered .
The opposition MLAs today staged a walk-out from the Maharashtra Assembly to protest the animal husbandry minister's reply on the alleged delay in vaccination of cattle for protection against the foot and mouth disease. The Congress and NCP members alleged corruption in the tendering process for selection of a company to conduct the vaccination drive, and demanded a judicial probe into it. Duringa discussion on the issue in the House through a Calling Attention notice, the opposition members said the vaccination campaign, to protect around 2.08 crore cattle from the foot and mouth disease in the state, was not conducted last year. They alleged corruption in the tendering process for the vaccination drive and sought a judicial inquiry into it. The state animal husbandry minister, Mahadev Jankar, refuted the allegations of graft and said tenders were issued seven times due to technical reasons. The only solution is that the government should have its own agency to ...

Having supportive relationships in midlife can counteract some of the adverse health risks - including premature death - caused by childhood abuse, a study has found. "This is one of the first studies to provide evidence suggesting that experiences long after exposure to abuse can mitigate the mortality risks associated with early abuse," said Jessica Chiang, postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University in the US. Research has linked childhood abuse to many adverse health outcomes in adulthood,, but according to new research, linked to childhood abuse. lead author of the study. Given the serious health consequences of childhood abuse later in life, such as heart disease, stroke and some cancers, researchers wanted to examine whether there's anything that can be done to compensate or reverse these effects. "Many of the diseases associated with childhood abuse typically emerge in middle and later stages of adulthood -decades after the abuse actually occurred," said Chiang, lead ...
Turns out, helmet use is associated with reduced risk of cervical spine injury during motorcycle crashes.According to a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin, during an accident, helmet use lowers the likelihood of cervical spine injury (CSI), particularly fractures of the cervical vertebrae, despite the claims that helmets do not protect the cervical spine during a motorcycle crash and may even increase the risk of injury.According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates, wearing helmets saved the lives of 1859 motorcycle riders in 2016; an additional 802 lives could have been saved if every motorcyclist had worn them.Wearing a helmet decreases the incidence and severity of traumatic brain injury during crashes. What then are the objections to universal laws requiring motorcycle helmet use?Major reasons cited for not requiring helmets while riding a motorcycle include freedom of choice, avoiding any limitation on vision, and a perceived increased .
Turns out, preschoolers exposed to nighttime light tend to sleep lesser.According to a University of Colorado at Boulder study, exposing preschoolers to an hour of bright light before bedtime almost completely shuts down their production of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin and keeps it suppressed for at least 50 minutes after lights out.The study is the first to assess the hormonal impact nighttime light exposure can have on young children. The study comes at a time when the use of electronics is rapidly expanding among this age group and adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that-because of structural differences in their eyes-children may be more vulnerable to the impact light has on sleep and the body clock."Although the effects of light are well studied in adults, virtually nothing is known about how evening light exposure affects the physiology, health, and development of preschool-aged children," said lead author Lameese Akacem. "In this study, we found that these ...
Restoring lipid synthesis could reduce lung fibrosis, a new study has revealed.According to a Thomas Jefferson University-study, restoring the lipids that help keep lung tissue flexible and inflated can help slow disease progression in laboratory models of pulmonary fibrosis.Pulmonary fibrosis, an ongoing process of scarring that leaves patients chronically short of breath, can progress in severity until the only course of treatment is the lung transplant."This is the first paper to show that rather than being a 'second hit' to help initiate the disease, blocking lipid synthesis alone -- with no other insult to the lungs -- can instigate fibrotic scaring," said researcher Ross Summer."This suggests that failure to produce lipids, perhaps because of injury or age-related metabolic changes in lung cells may be an underappreciated process in the development of lung fibrosis, one that may also offer a new and potentially easier path to new treatment of this disease," said Dr. Romero, the .
