Researchers have found an early detection method for certain forms of dementia. Patients with a rare neurodegenerative brain disorder, called Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), show abnormalities in brain function in areas that look structurally normal in an MRI scan."We wanted to study how degeneration affects the functioning of the brain," said Aneta Kielar, the study's lead author and assistant professor in the UA Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences.Structural MRI provides 3D visualisation of brain structure, which is useful when studying patients with diseases that literally cause brain cells to wither away, like PPA.Magnetoencephalography, or MEG, on the other hand, "gives you really good spatial precision as to where the brain response originates. We want to know if the decreased brain function is coming from the areas that are already atrophied or areas in an earlier stage of decline," said Jed Meltzer, the study's senior author and an assistant professor of ...
While mental health still remains a taboo as far as mainstream discussions are concerned, researchers are constantly trying to zero down every possible root cause of it.A recent study has identified 70 previously unknown genes that contribute to people developing serious mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).As part of the study, a team of Australian researchers identified how the activity or expression of those 70 new genes, and 261 other genes that were already linked to mental illnesses, increased the disease risk."In this study, we are homing in on the biological causes of these mental illnesses," said Eske Derks, a lead researcher of the study published in the Journal Nature Genetics. The study was led by the head of QIMR Berghofer's Translational Neurogenomics Group in collaboration with scientists from Vanderbilt University and the University of Amsterdam. The researchers examined data ...
In a marked resurgence, at least 839 people were confirmed to be suffering from measles as of this month in the United States, as per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).This comes as New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene declared a state of emergency, warning Brooklyn's residents of fines to the tune of USD 1,000 if they refuse to get vaccinated.According to the authorities, 75 new cases were reported until May 10. Amongst these, 41 are from New York City alone while 25 cases were confirmed in nearby Rockland County, reports Xinhua. The highly contagious virus has made a resurgence in parts of US due to low levels of vaccination amongst a few communities in the nation. Even though no deaths due to measles have been reported yet, authorities believe that it's just a matter of time.According to the World Health Organisation, pneumonia and encephalitis are the most common severe complications arising out of measles.Virus-laced droplets can hover in ...
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, 342 candidates with criminal cases are contesting the elections than the number in 2009 polls, according to National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
American singer-songwriter Britney Spears recently joined the social media movement to free her from her conservatorship.Quoting sources, TMZ has reported that Britney opened up in front of the judge on Friday, stating that her father Jamie Spears committed her to a mental health facility a month ago against her will and also forced her to take drugs.TMZ broke the story: Britney spent 30 days at an L.A. mental health facility after she began rapidly going downhill. She stopped taking the drugs that kept her stable after they stopped working and doctors still have been unable to find the right combination.Jamie Spears does not have the power under the conservatorship to either commit Britney against her will. A mental health facility that accepted an adult patient against the patient's will when the conservator did not have such power would be committing a crime. And remember, Britney frequently left the place and was seen out and about, as reported by TMZ.The judge took no action and .
Of the 909 candidates contesting the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections, 170 (19 per cent) have criminal cases against them, while 127 (14 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against their names, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
US health officials say this year's count of measles cases has surpassed 800, a growing tally that is already the nation's highest in 25 years. A total of 839 cases were reported as of last week. That's the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the latest numbers Monday. In all, 23 states have reported cases this year. The vast majority of illnesses have been in New York most of them among unvaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish communities. That pattern continued last week, with most of the 75 new cases coming from New York. Measles was once common in the U.S. but gradually became rare after a vaccination campaigns that started in the 1960s.
Women have almost twice the risk of severe complications in surgically induced abortion, which is otherwise a low-risk procedure, if their physician performs the procedure infrequently, claimed researchers. The research was published in 'CMAJ' (Canadian Medical Association Journal)."A physician who performs more procedures, regularly, most likely gains proficiency, as well as the ability to recognise and troubleshoot potential problems. Experience and practice lower the likelihood of major complications," said the researchers Ning Liu and Dr Joel Ray.Low physician procedure volume is known to be associated with an increased risk of complications after complex surgery for cardiac, cancer and pelvic conditions, but little was known about its association with a common and technically simpler procedure like surgical abortion. The study looked at data over 13 years, on 5,29141 induced surgical abortions performed before 20 weeks' gestation, and compared low-volume and high-volume ...
When it comes to feeling jealous, timing could make all the difference. New research has found that we are more envious of someone else's covetable experience before it happens than after it has passed.
An increasing number of people in India prefer to include almonds in their pre and post workout diet, a study claims. A total of 3,066 men and women aged between 31 and 40 were interviewed across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Jaipur, Pune, Bhopal and Visakhapatnam. The study conducted by market research company IPSOS found that 86 per cent people felt more energetic throughout the day after consuming almonds. It also found that 67 per cent of respondents wanted to have a snack both pre and post a workout, and 80 per cent of these preferred to eat a balanced diet either always or very frequently. The quantitative study aimed to identify the pre and post snacking preferences of men and women. The results indicate that snacking on healthy and nutritious food both pre and post workout was of utmost importance to all. The study concluded that 75 per cent of the respondents preferred to include almonds in their pre and post workout diet. As many as 90 per cent of the respondents ...
In a recent study researchers have outlined five important points about malignant skin cancer called melanoma. The study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) highlighted the following five points about melanoma:Sun exposure is an important factor in the development of melanoma, so it often appears on the face, neck, arms and torso, where sun exposure is common.Melanoma can also occur on areas with minimal sun exposure, such as palms and soles of the feet.A specific mitogen-activated pathway is linked to mutations causing melanoma and genomic sequencing helps in identifying markers for diagnosis and treatment.About 10 per cent of melanomas are challenging to diagnose as they may be pink, red, clear or normal skin-coloured.Patients with any suspicious skin lesions should be referred to dermatology. Coloured lesions with any of the ABCDE criteria -- Asymmetric shape, irregular Border, Colour variation, Diameter greater than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) and .
Artificial intelligence-based systems can predict death and heart attack in patients suffering from chest pain with greater accuracy than humans, says a new study.
An Indian woman suffering from a rare disease, which even left her in a coma after a major surgery, is fighting against being deported from the UK back to India. Bhavani Espathi, who came to Britain as a student, suffers from Crohn's Disease a digestive tract disorder for which she requires a specific immunosuppressant which she says is currently unavailable in India. "The only thing keeping me somewhat 'healthy' besides constant medical attention are immunosuppressants such as Ustekinumab, which is currently unavailable in India, the country that the British Home Office believes is a place I should return for palliative care' instead of living in the UK," says the 31-year-old, who has launched an online campaign to seek support for her case. The UK Home Office recently issued a letter stating that her application for leave to remain in the UK had been refused and that she was liable to be forcibly removed. The letter arrived as she lay in a coma after a major operation and her ...
Just like we take care of babies during summer to keep their bodies cool and refreshed, it is important to pay attention to their scalp and hair to keep dry and flaky skin at bay, which is a common concern among newborns.
The Amul Dairy has increased milk procurement prices by Rs 10 on a kg of fat for buffalo milk and Rs 4.5 in the case of cow milk following a drop in production because due to summer heat, official sources said.
Scientists have developed an electronic tongue that can 'taste' spicy foods more accurately than humans. Spicy food wears out taste buds quickly. This can be a problem for people who make and sell spicy food. "At low concentrations, or low spiciness, it's hard to discriminate between two samples," said Courtney Schlossareck, a graduate student at Washington State University in the US. "It's also hard to tell a difference between two samples at high concentrations," said Schlossareck. The e-tongue's ability to differentiate between the spiciness of foods could come in handy for industry, according to a study published in the Journal of Food Science. A problem with testing spicy foods is that people can only test a few samples before their taste buds give out. After a few bites, taste buds can not distinguish differences in taste at all. However, the e-tongue can handle as much heat as any scientist can throw at it and maintain accuracy. "This would allow testers to narrow a selection .
Over 1.5 crore people will need chemotherapy globally each year by 2040, a new study has said, suggesting that around one lakh cancer physicians will be required to treat the growing number of cancer patients mostly in low and middle-income countries. The study published recently in the prestigious the Lancet Oncology journal has predicted that from 2018 to 2040, the number of patients needing chemotherapy each year will rise by a 53 per cent from 9.8 million to 15 million (1.5 crore) globally. It is the first study to estimate the scale of chemotherapy provision needed at national, regional and global scales to respond to this situation. The study was conducted by researchers at University of New South Wales in Sydney, Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, Kinghorn Cancer Centre, Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre in Australia and International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon. According to researcher Brooke Wilson of UNSW, the rising global cancer burden was undoubtedly ...
Inhibiting the function of a gene may lead to the death of the most prevalent and lethal type of brain tumour in adults, according to a study. With no curative treatment currently available, glioblastomas cannot be surgically completely excised, as the tumour cells are adept at invading tissues and spreading around the brain. In addition, glioblastoma cells are extremely resistant to existing drug therapies, said researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland. For a long time, researchers have been looking for weaknesses in glioblastoma cells which could be targeted with efficacious therapies. They have already earlier found that the expression of a small fatty acid-binding protein (MDGI, or FABP3) in glioblastoma cells increases their ability to invade tissues and is linked with a poorer prognosis for the patient. "Our new research revealed that glioblastoma cells depend on the expression of a gene which produces the MDGI protein," said Professor Pirjo Laakkonen from the ...
