Doctors stress for women to get cervical cancer vaccine

Every eight minutes, one woman in India succumbs to cervical cancer. New smart pillows may prevent flat head syndrome in babies

Scientists have developed a smart baby pillow that can prevent and even correct mild cases of flat head syndrome, caused when infants repeatedly lie on their backs to sleep. Babies are born with highly malleable skulls, and therefore receiving constant pressure on a particular part of their head may lead to some positional flattening or molding of the head. Although this does not harm brain development nor cause any lasting appearance problems, simple practices, like placing them in different positions over the course of each day, can easily prevent a baby from developing an asymmetrical skull shape. "We came up with the idea to help new parents who are in drastic need of sleep. NPPA fixes retail price of 5 formulations

National drug pricing regulator NPPA today said it has fixed the retail prices of five formulations including those used for the treatment of hypertension, asthma and heart failure. The national Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has also revised the ceiling price of Metronidazole injection used for treatment of the bacterial infections. "NPPA has fixed/revised ceiling prices/retail prices of 06 formulations under Drugs Prices Control Order, 2013," the regulator said in a notification. The NPPA is mandated to fix/revise the prices of controlled bulk drugs and formulations and to enforce prices and availability of the medicines in the country. It also monitors the prices of decontrolled drugs in order to keep them at reasonable levels. The regulator implements and enforces the provisions of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order. It is also entrusted with the task of recovering amounts overcharged by manufacturers for the controlled drugs from the consumers.

Raj guv tells doctors to be sensitive towards patients

Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh today said that doctors should be sensitive towards patients and should not let differences with government affect them. Speaking at the convocation programme of the Rajasthan University for Health Sciences (RUHS) here, Singh said that doctors may have a difference with system or the government but this should not lead to inhumanity and they should be sensitive towards patients. He said that doctors are regarded as God and when the doors of hospitals are closed for even one day, it becomes troublesome for patients and their families. The governor said that the doctors should not be disinclined to their duty despite numerous of their own problems and should always serve patients. He also conferred gold medals and degrees to meritorious students of the university in the presence of vice chancellor Rajababu Panwar and others.

Chinese scientists advance genetic analysis of thyroid cancer

Scientists is China have successfully depicted the genetic landscape of thyroid cancer in the Chinese population, providing a fundamental insight into the pathogenesis of the disease, according to a media report today. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common thyroid cancer. Scientists conducted genetic analysis of 355 samples of cancerous tissues and its adjacent tissues from the patients suffering from PTC to determine the mutational landscape of the cancer. Genetic mutation of cancer varies by the factors, including geography and living habits, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Previous researches focused on the genetic mutation of PTCs in western populations, but this research characterises the genetic landscape in Chinese patients with PTC for the first time. Nearly 22% Indian adults suffer constipation: Survey

Nearly 22 per cent of country's adult population suffers from constipation and Kolkata tops the charts with 28 per cent respondents suffering from it, a survey said. "The findings suggest that 22 per cent of the adult Indian population is suffering from the condition, with 13 per cent complaining of severe constipation. 6 per cent of the Indian population suffer from constipation associated with certain comorbidities," healthcare firm Abbott said in its Gut Health Survey here. Cause of mystery polio-like illness found

A virus called Enterovirus D68 may be the cause of a mysterious polio-like illness that has paralysed children in the US, Canada and Europe, scientists say. Researchers at University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia analysed the scientific literature on the condition known as acute flaccid myelitis. "In 2014, children in the US began to be diagnosed with a mystery illness that caused a polio-like paralysis," said Professor Raina MacIntyre of UNSW. "More than 120 children developed the condition, known as acute flaccid myelitis, in the US alone but experts were baffled as to the cause," said MacIntyre, who led the study published in the journal Eurosurveillance. People die more on weekends

Turns out, patients are more likely to die during off-hours or on weekends - whether due to a brain bleed, a heart attack or a blood clot in the lungs. Doctors call it the "weekend effect".A new study, based on a previous research about lower survival rates from in-hospital cardiac arrest during nights and weekends, showed that the "survival trends during the odd-hours have improved in past decade or so".The new study, carried by Dr. Uchenna Ofoma, indicated that the treatment has gotten better but the night-and-weekends gap is yet to be closed. NHRC sends notice to BHEL over medical negligence

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday sent notices to the Chairman of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and the medical superintendent of BHEL hospital in Haridwar after a patient, who was allegedly alive, was declared dead."By providing appropriate treatment in time, the life of the deceased could have been saved. The inhuman act done by the doctors has violated the right to life and health care of the deceased," the NHRC said in a statement.The Commission has observed that this was the worst example of medical negligence committed by the doctors of a state-owned hospital.It has called for a detailed report within six weeks along with action taken against the accused doctors and relief provided to the family of the deceased.On January 12, a Bhel employee (44) was rushed to hospital after he complained of chest pain.He was declared dead by the doctors in the night, following which the body was shifted to the mortuary.The next day, on January 13, a post-mortem was
