A poster presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (LB-061: "CRD5500: a versatile small molecule STING agonist amenable to bioconjugation as an ADC") reported that the Curadev STING agonist potently activates all major known
Researchers have developed a computer game that can be used to train people to eat less sugar. This could aid in reducing weight and improving health."Added sugar is one of the biggest culprits of excess calories and is also associated with several health risks including cancer. For these reasons, eliminating added sugar from a person's diet results in weight loss and reduced risk of disease," wrote lead researcher Forman in the study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine. The researchers developed and evaluated a "brain training" game targeting the part of the brain that inhibits impulses with the hope that it would improve diet, specifically by decreasing the consumption of sweet foods."Cognitive, or 'brain, training' games have been used to help people reduce unhealthy habits, like smoking. We were also seeing positive results from labs using computer training programs," said Forman. The game automatically customized the training to focus on the sweets that each participant
Disruption in power supply allegedly left five patients on life support dead at Government Rajaji Hospital here, police said Wednesday. However, Dean Vanitha said the patients, who were in the ICU, died of natural causes. The dean said it was a sheer coincidence that the electricity supply was disrupted at that time. On the other hand, relatives of the deceased alleged the ventilators were not working properly. Refuting the charges, Director (Medical Education) Dr A Edwin Joe said the ventilators were alright as these had built-in batteries. Among the five who died were Malliga (58), Palaniammal (60) and Ravindran (52). Relatives of the patients also staged a dharna. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sasimohan, dean Vanitha and medical superintendent Raja held talks with the bereaved families.
Natco Pharma Wednesday announced that its marketing partner Alvogen has received the final approval of Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Nitroglycerin Sublingual Tablets USP, 0.3 mg, 0.4 mg, and 0.6 mg. Nitroglycerin sublingual tablets are used to treat episodes of angina (chest pain) in people who have coronary artery disease (narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart). Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Ltd markets this drug under its brand Nitrostat Sublingual Tablets in the same strengths mentioned above. Quoting market reports Natco said Nitroglycerin Sublingual Tablets had total annual sales of around USD 77.3 million in the US market, for the year ending 2018.
Alcohol consumption in India increased from 4.3 litres a year per adult to 5.9 litres in 2017, a growth of 38 per cent, says a study of 189 countries' alcohol intake.
India's annual alcohol intake increased by 38 per cent between 2010 and 2017, according to a study published Wednesday which found the total volume of alcohol consumed globally per year has risen by 70 per cent since 1990. Published in The Lancet journal, the study of 189 countries' alcohol intake between 1990-2017 and estimated intake up to 2030 suggests that the world is not on track to achieve targets against harmful alcohol use. Between 2010 and 2017, alcohol consumption in India increased by 38 per cent -- from 4.3 to 5.9 litres per adult per year, said researchers from TU Dresden in Germany. Over the same timescale, consumption increased slightly in the US (9.3-9.8 litres) and in China (7.1-7.4 litres), they said. As a result of increased alcohol consumption and population growth, the total volume of alcohol consumed globally per year has increased by 70 per cent -- from 20,999 million litres in 1990 to 35,676 million litres in 2017. Intake is growing in low- and middle-income ..
A new study suggests that a certain kind of molecules present in the blood could help in diagnosing Alzheimer's disease.People who had amyloid in their brain, a peptide which is used in the diagnosis for Alzheimer's, were found to have a higher amount of fatty molecules that induce sleep in blood.Amyloid leads to the formation of plaque in the brain, and plaque accumulation happens many years before the symptoms begin to appear, according to the study published in the journal 'Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association'."This is the first study in which lipid molecules produced in the brain are found in the blood, as amyloid deposition increases in Alzheimer's disease," said the lead author of the study, Dr. Cristina Legido-Quigley.For the study, researchers used a technique similar to throwing a fishnet to catch more number of molecules in the blood. This technique investigated if the molecules in the blood could be associated with amyloid in the ...

The sound of doctors boring through his skull to feed electrodes deep into his brain made Yan tremble. "The drill was like bzzzzzzz," he later recalled. "The moment of drilling is the most terrible." Yan is a methamphetamine addict. The hope is that technology will extinguish his addiction quite literally, with the flip of a switch. The treatment deep brain stimulation has long been used for movement disorders like Parkinson's. Now, the first clinical trial of DBS for methamphetamine addiction is being conducted at Shanghai's Ruijin Hospital, along with trials for opioid addicts. Yan is the study's first patient; for fear of losing his job, he asked that only his surname be published. Western attempts to push forward with human trials of deep brain stimulation for drug addiction have foundered, even as China has emerged as a hub for this kind of research. But the vast suffering wrought by the US opioid epidemic may be changing the risk-reward calculus for doctors and regulators. ...

Despite significant advances in medical and surgical treatments for heart failure in the past decade, premature deaths caused by heart failure are on the rise in the US, especially among younger adults, says a study.
When it comes to children, it becomes difficult to detect depression and anxiety because they are mostly unable to voice their emotions. A recent study suggests that a machine learning algorithm can detect signs of anxiety and depression in the speech patterns of young children.According to the study, this finding can potentially provide a fast and easy way of diagnosing conditions that are difficult to spot and often overlooked in young people.Around one in five children suffer from anxiety and depression, collectively known as "internalizing disorders." But because children under the age of eight can't reliably articulate their emotional suffering, adults need to be able to infer their mental state and recognise potential mental health problems.Waiting lists for appointments with psychologists, insurance issues, and failure to recognise the symptoms by parents all contribute to children missing out on vital treatment."We need quick, objective tests to catch kids when they are ...
Western Railway authorities have busted a racket in which people submitted forged cancer patient concession certificates to procure reserved train tickets. The railways provides between 50 to 100 per cent concession on basic fare in various travel classes to cancer patients and they are also given preference for confirmed berths in the emergency quota. Acting on a tip-off, the WR's Vigilance department seized 74 such forged cancer concession certificates from the ticket reservation centre at Dadar in the metropolis. A senior WR official said the forged forms used by these people bear the stamp and signature of a famous city- based oncologist. "It is shocking that people are using such fake cancer documents to get confirmed tickets on trains. We have recovered 74 such forms from the Dadar reservation centre. However, the accused managed to escape," said Ravinder Bhakar, chief public relations officer, WR. "The doctors whose signatures appear on these forms have denied ...

By filming the internal processing of immune system, researchers have found a better understanding of how the immune system kills bacteria and why our own cells remain intact. To kill bacteria in the blood, our immune system relies on nanomachines that can open deadly holes in their targets. UCL scientists have now filmed these nanomachines in action, discovering a key bottleneck in the process which helps to protect our own cells.According to the study published in the Journal of Nature Communications, this research may guide the development of new therapies that harness the immune system against bacterial infections, and strategies that repurpose the immune system to act against other rogue cells in the body.In earlier research, the scientists imaged the hallmarks of attack in live bacteria, showing that the immune system response results in 'bullet holes' spread across the cell envelopes of bacteria. The holes are incredibly small with a diameter of just 10 nanometers, about 1/10,000
