Protesting against Soren's arrest, tribal outfits call Jharkhand bandh

Protesting against the arrest of former CM Hemant Soren, several tribal outfits gave a call for Jharkhand bandh on Thursday. Speaking to PTI, Kendriya Sarna Samiti president Ajay Tirkey said 15-20 tribal organisations from across the state will join the shutdown. "Despite cooperating with the ED in the investigation, Hemant Soren was arrested. We protest this," he said. Tirkey said that emergency services would not be hampered by the shutdown. "We will not disturb schools if they were opened on Thursday," he added. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Soren after over seven hours of questioning on money laundering charges in an alleged land fraud case. Before the arrest, Soren tendered his resignation as the chief minister.

Top INDIA bloc leaders hold meeting after arrest of J'khand CM Soren

Top leaders of the opposition bloc INDIA met on Wednesday evening and discussed the situation arising after the resignation and arrest of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence was attended by Sonia Gandhi, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and DMK leader T R Baalu, among others. Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is a constituent of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), formed by more than two dozen opposition parties to take on the BJP unitedly in the Lok Sabha elections due in April-May. Soren was arrested on Wednesday in a money laundering case after resigning as the Jharkhand chief minister, while state transport minister Champai Soren's name was proposed as the new CM.

Hemant Soren in ED custody, JMM leader Champai Soren to be new Jharkhand CM

Hemant Soren on Wednesday resigned as Jharkhand Chief Minister while the ruling JMM-led coalition proposed the name of senior leader Champai Soren as new state head. Soren tendered his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan after about seven hours of questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to a land scam. "Hemant Soren has resigned as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. The ruling JMM-Congress-RJD alliance has proposed the name of senior JMM leader Champai Soren as the new CM," state Congress president Rajesh Thakur said. Earlier, the legislators gathered at the CM residence elected Champai Soren as the leader of the JMM legislative party. Party spokesperson Vinod Pandey said a general consensus was reached on Champai Soren. Earlier, there were speculations that Hemant Soren's wife Kalpana's name could be proposed as the new CM.

ED reaches Soren's residence, to question him in money laundering case

Amid heavy security cover, Enforcement Directorate officials on Wednesday reached Chief Minister Hemant Soren's residence here to question him in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. Soren, 48, who is also the executive president of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), had earlier been questioned in connection with the case on January 20. The interrogation that day was incomplete, an official said, adding, the fresh round of questioning will start soon. Legislators of the ruling JMM-led coalition have gathered at Soren's residence here to express their solidarity with the CM.

Rallies, meetings suspended ahead of CM Soren's questioning by ED

Prohibitory orders were clamped in key areas of Ranchi, and a three-member team has been formed to oversee the law and order situation in the Jharkhand capital, ahead of Chief Minister Hemant Soren's questioning by the ED, officials said Wednesday. Soren reaches CM residence in Ranchi; holds meeting of ruling alliance MLAs

Amidst suspense about his whereabouts, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has reached his official residence in Ranchi, a source in the CMO said on Tuesday. He is currently chairing a meeting of the ruling alliance MLAs at the CM House to discuss the present political situation in the state. Soren reached his official residence here past midnight, the source said. In photographs and videos shared by the CMO on X, a large number of MLAs and ministers were seen greeting Soren before taking part in the meeting. J'khand Guv meets senior officials, takes stock of security arrangements

Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan Tuesday met senior government officers and took stock of security arrangements in the wake of the unfolding political situation, following ED's search at the Delhi residence of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, a top official said. Radhakrishnan called Chief Secretary Lalbiaktluanga Khiangte, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avinash Kumar, among others, at the Raj Bhavan here, Director General of Police, Ajay Kumar Singh, told PTI. Elaborate security arrangements have been made across the state to maintain law and order, including deployment of an additional 7,000 policemen, he said. An Enforcement Directorate team on Monday visited the residence of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in connection with a money laundering investigation, official sources said. The sources indicated that the visit could be linked to his fresh deposition in an alleged land fraud case in which the ED had questioned him at his official residence in Ranchi on January 20. The agency had issued fresh summons to him last week asking him to confirm his availability for questioning on either January 29 or January 31, sources had said. The investigation pertains to a "huge racket of illegal change of ownership of land by the mafia" in Jharkhand, according to the agency.

After fresh ED summons, Jharkhand CM leaves for sudden visit to Delhi

Amid the Enforcement Directorate issuing a fresh summons to Chief Minister Hemant Soren asking him to join the investigation in a money laundering case, the JMM leader on Saturday departed for the national capital sparking off speculations regarding the sudden visit. His trip to Delhi came in the backdrop of the ED asking him whether he would be available for questioning on either January 29 or January 31. "The visit was not planned. The sudden plan was made after the issuance of a fresh summons by the ED. He has his scheduled events lined up including a programme in Chaibasa on January 29, in Palamu on January 30 and in Giridih on January 31," an official who did not wish to be quoted said. A source said he went to Delhi for legal consultations. However, this could not be corroborated from the Chief Minister's Office though officials confirmed that he left for Delhi. Soren lays foundation stone for Rs 5,000-crore private university in Ranchi

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a Rs 5,000-crore private university in Ranchi. The Azim Premji University will be built on a 146-acre plot in Ranchi's Itki block, around 25 km away from the capital city. Interacting with Premji, the founder chairman of Wipro, who joined the programme virtually, Soren invited him to visit Jharkhand. Premji thanked the chief minister for the support of the state government for the project and said that this will be one of the biggest universities in the country. The Enforcement Directorate has issued a fresh summons to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and asked him to again record his statement in a money laundering case between January 27 and 31, official sources said on Monday. The central agency recorded his statement for the first time in the case on January 20 after investigators went to his official residence here. They recorded his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) during the about seven hours they spent at his home.
