Westminster Abbey unveils gallery in area closed for 700 years

A space on top of London's Westminster Abbey that was once used for storage has been turned into a new gallery with a spectacular view on the nave that opens to the public on June 11. The space was intended for chapels that were never built and has been closed to the public ever since it was built 700 years ago. Late poet John Betjeman referred to the space, 16 metres (52 feet) above the abbey floor, as having the "best view in Europe". The "Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries" are accessible through a lift and 108 steps built inside a new tower -- the biggest architectural change to the historic abbey since the 18th century. "The views are breathtaking. The space astonishing. The displays fascinating," said Reverend John Hall, Dean of Westminster. Additional service on NMR to meet demand of tourists

With the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) occupying a place of pride on the vast Indian Railways network, efforts are on to introduce additional service to meet the demand of tourists visiting Udhagamandalam every year. To start with, a round trip between Ooty and Ketti would begin to give tourists the experience of train travel in the picturesque mountainside. The Southern Railway is also ready to offer chartered service by a steam engine between Mettupalayam and Coonoor for interested corporates and tour operators. To increase the service, two additional steam locomotives and 15 coaches have been manufactured at the Golden Rock Workshop in Tiruchirappalli and Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. Once the additional rolling stock is received, round trips for those visiting Coonoor would also be introduced between Coonoor and Runnymede, a Southern Railway press release said. Cardamom small variety prices edged up by Rs 5 per kg at the wholesale kirana market in the national capital today due to mild demand from retailers. However, other spices held steady in thin trade. Restoration work of Red Fort to be completed by December: ASI

Even as a debate surrounding the Red Fort being "adopted" by a private party rages on, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said today that its restoration-and-conservation work would be completed by December this year. In a recently signed MoU the iconic Mughal-era monument was "adopted" by the cement conglomerate Dalmia Bharat Group as part of the Tourism Ministry's 'Adopt a Heritage' scheme. "The restoration work is being done at an estimated cost of around Rs 45-50 crore. The work started in January this year and is expected to get over by December," said N K Pathak, ASI's superintending archaeologist (Delhi circle). Restoration of monuments is underway at Mumtaz Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), the fort's main entrance -- Lahori Gate -- and its ramparts from where the prime minister gives his Independence Day speech. Assets disputes between UP and Uttarakhand to be resolved in 2 months: Yogi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said today the disputes related to assets distribution between UP and Uttarakhand pending for the last 17 to 18 years will be resolved in two months. "Both states have arrived at a consensus over all pending matters after the recent round of talks between the chief secretaries and they will be resolved in two months," Yogi said after laying the foundation stone of a 100-room tourist guest house owned by UP government here. The UP CM also announced that the Alaknanda hotel over which the two states have long been embroiled in an ownership dispute will belong to Uttarakhand. Suzuki Motorcycle launches Gixxer ABS variant at Rs 87,250

Suzuki Motorcycle India today launched a new variant of its 155 cc bike Gixxer with anti-lock braking system (ABS), priced at Rs 87,250 (ex-showroom Delhi). "The ABS option allows us to improve on an already exciting riding experience for our Gixxer customers. The Gixxer series is an important cog of our India product-strategy," Suzuki Motorcycle India EVP Sales and Marketing Sajeev Rajasekharan said in a statement. With enhancements like ABS, the company will continue to improve on the value-proposition it offers to its customers, he added. The Gixxer ABS variant comes fitted with a front wheel speed sensor to detect wheel speed for better stability and controlled braking force.

Barely 1200 meters away from summiting Mt Kachenjunga, Arjun Vajpai's entire journey as a mountaineer flashed right in front of his eyes. Vajpai became the youngest mountaineer at 24 to have scaled six peaks above 8,000 meters after successfully climbing Kanchenjunga on May 20. Man, son killed as dumper overturns

A man and his minor son were killed after a dumper overturned on them during road repairing work in Nathdwara town of Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, police said today. Nitesh Soni (35) and his son Yansh (8) had gone to buy ice-cream from a road side vendor near the Nathdwara Temple where road repairing was going on. They were standing near the dumper which overturned last night, assistant sub inspector of Nathdwara police station Tulsi Ram said. The ASI said the dumper was there to off load gravel for repairing work and it was stationed on the edge of a pit. It suddenly overturned trapping the man and his son. The bodies have been handed over to family members.
