Rs 24 lakh for Baba Banda Singh Bahadur memorial in Mohali

Punjab's Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu today announced Rs 24 lakh for the development of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur memorial in Chappar Chiri here. Sidhu said the fund would be used for the development of the site as well as the facilitation of tourists. The memorial was set up in 2011 to acknowledge the valour of the Sikhs in a historic battle with the Mughals. Sidhu's visit to the memorial came after the MLA from Mohali Balbir Singh Sidhu demanded sprucing up of the basic infrastructure of the memorial, an official release said. Sidhu announced Rs 12 lakh on the behalf of the rural development and panchayat minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa for the restoration of the approach road towards the memorial as well as Rs 12 lakh from his own discretionary quota for the beautification of the memorial and facilitation of tourists. Odisha man moves mountains to send children to school

Eight hours of gruelling work every day for two years, Jalandhar Nayak has been single-handedly moving mountains to construct a 15-kilometre road, connecting his village Gumsahi to the main road in Phulbani town of Kandhamal. The district administration has now decided to honour and support Nayak's efforts by paying him under the MGNREGS scheme. "I am overwhelmed with Nayak's effort and determination to cut mountains to build a road. He will be paid under MGNREGS scheme for all the days he has worked," Brunda D told reporters yesterday. Much like Bihar's 'mountain man' Dasrath Manjhi, who has spent 22 years of his life to build a 360-feet road, Nayak, with his steely resolve, has carved out an 8-km-long stretch through hillocks in two years and plans to extend it by another 7 km in the next three years. Utrecht mayor inaugurates India Tourism and Kerala Tourism pavilions

Ambassador of India to The Netherlands Venu Rajamony and the Mayor of Utrecht Jan van Zanen inaugurated the 'Incredible India' and Kerala Tourism stalls on January 9 at the Vakantiebeurs (Holiday Fair), the largest tourism event in the country.The mayor was the first to view India's major tourist attractions in Virtual Reality, a novel initiative taken by the Embassy of India in collaboration with India Tourism.As a special attraction, visitors also received an opportunity to take pictures of themselves with monuments such as Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar etc as well as wildlife and natural landscapes.The stalls were inaugurated with the mayor and Ambassador Rajamony lighting traditional Indian lamps. Rail Museum now offers ride on century-old Patiala monorail

Visitors at the National Rail Museum here can experience a ride on the century-old Patiala monorail every Thursday. It is the latest in over 100 real-size exhibits displayed in the museum which showcases the glory of a bygone era. Built by Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh, the rail- cum-road-borne railway system was one of its kind in the world. This unique monorail hauled by steam locomotives is one of its kind in the world and has been made available for visitors every Thursday, the railways said today. Formally inaugurated on February 1, 1977, the National Rail Museum offers history, heritage, romance, nostalgia, fun, leisure and entertainment, all at one place. Spread over 10 acres at Chanakyapuri here, it comprises an indoor gallery devoted to displaying various exhibits, models, records, photographs, coat of arms and documents.

Trains to restart from Swiss ski resort after heavy snowfall

Trains from popular Swiss ski station Zermatt are due to reopen Wednesday, providing relief for some 13,000 tourists trapped there by heavy snowfall, a statement said. Visitors have been stuck in the mountain resort for two days after snow blocked road and rail links. "The railway line between Zermatt - Tasch will reopen. The first train leaves at 11.15 am (1015 GMT), a statement on Zermatt's official site said. Tasch is a small Swiss village six kilometres from from Zermatt that serves as a gateway for those travelling in the Matterhorn mountain region. The statement added that the rail network in Tasch remains closed due to snow, but replacement buses are operating, making it possible for people to reach regional airports. Extreme weather has caused havoc in several Swiss areas, including the Valais region south of Zermatt and in the canton of Bern, where a World Cup downhill training run had to be cancelled due to snow and high winds.

Railways to focus on branding to promote rail tourism

To promote rail tourism in the country, the railways has asked its zonal arms and public sector undertakings to outsource their ticketing and catering works to IRCTC and concentrate on branding. The instruction came days after a parliamentary committee in its report blamed the national transporter for not doing enough to promote rail tourism. In a letter on January 3, Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani has asked all zonal railways to promote the brand of rail tourism on select routes. He has asked them to identify tourist and luxury trains and brand them both on the interior and exterior. Lohani has also asked rail PSUs such as Indian Railway Finance Corporation and Ircon International, and zonal railways to give the catering contracts for all events, seminars and programmes held outside rail premises to IRCTC, the railways' catering and tourism arm. Senior zonal railway officials have been told that the responsibility of managing such events should also be entrusted .

Only 1 among 14 applicants got nod for rooftop restaurant

The local civic body has received applications from 14 entities to set up rooftop restaurants after it unveiled a policy in this regard in November but only one of them has got the nod so far, a civic official said. Interestingly, '1Above', the high-end pub in the Kamala Mill Compound, where a devastating fire killed 14 people on December 29, is among the applicants, but its plea is still under process. In November last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) came up with a rooftop restaurant policy. It put in place guidelines and riders for granting licences to start rooftop restaurants in the metropolis. "We have received 14 common business applications so far from the owners of hotels and restaurants, seeking permission to run rooftop eateries in night. "Only one of them has been accorded the permission," BMC executive health officer Padmaja Keskar told PTI today. Finnish woman found dead in Chennai hotel

A 22-year-old Finnish woman was found dead in a hotel in the Himalayas Residency hotel in Chennai's Triplicane, on Wednesday morning.She had booked the hotel, along with her boyfriend, also a Finland national, on Tuesday.The incident came to light when the woman was found unconscious by her boyfriend this morning. She was later declared dead.The reason of her death is found out to be an overdose of drugs and alcohol.An investigation into the matter in underway.

Swiggy launches operations in Chandigarh

Food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy today said it has expanded its services to Chandigarh and has tied up with over 250 restaurants in the city. The startup, which has gained a substantial market share and was last valued at USD 400 million when Naspers led a USD 80-million investment in May, said it will soon expand to neighbouring cities Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur. The restaurants partnered include legendary eateries, trendy cafes, ice cream parlours and national and international Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs) in the city. "The restaurant scene here is a perfect mix of traditional and fast-food, making it a food lover's paradise... Europe's 'largest casino complex' to open in Cyprus by 2021

A casino complex billed as the largest of its kind in Europe is scheduled to begin operations in Cyprus by 2021, giving a major boost to the economy, officials said today. Macau's Melco International and its Cypriot partner Cyprus Phassouri Ltd presented their plans in Nicosia for the first casino resort in the internationally recognised south of the Mediterranean holiday island. Estimated to cost 600 million euros, the complex would be the largest integrated casino in Europe, with 500 hotel rooms and other facilities spanning more than 6,000 square metres (64,580 square feet). It will accommodate 136 gaming tables, 1,200 gaming machines and 11 restaurants. The project "is expected to have a significant impact on the country's GDP," said Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades at the presentation.
