Farmers in 23 villages today staged a demonstration near here opposing the rejuvenation camp for elephants at Mettupalayam. The 48-day camp is beginning on the banks of the Bhavani river at Thekkapatti tomorrow. The protesters staged the protest at Karamadai, 20 km from the camp venue. Officials said 33 elephants from various mutts and temples in the state are expected to participate. The farmers claimed that due to the presence of the jumbos in the camp, wild elephants from nearby jungles stray into their lands and destroy the crops, police said. The agitating farmers appealed to the government either to shift the venue of the camp or conduct it in respective temples, police added.

Two climbers died after they fell off from Table Mountain in South Africa's Cape Town.According to the local media reports, the authorities confirmed the incident on Tuesday.The victims were identified as a Japanese man and a local South African guide.The (WSAR) said the two climbers fell off the mountain while rock climbing on Monday, adding that a third climber, a Japanese woman, was rescued and is receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.The Japanese couple were climbing the mountain along a common route with the local guide, the WSAR further said.However, it remained unclear what had led to their fall.Reportedly, hundreds of tourists were left stranded, due to the rescue operation.

Liquor consumption in Noida and Greater Noida more than doubled on New Year as tipplers consumed alcohol worth about Rs 3.5 crore during the celebrations, and excise department official said today. "It is estimated that liquor worth Rs 3.5 crore was consumed at bars or sold at liquor shops on the last day of the year," District Excise Officer Rakesh Kumar Singh said. Several hotels and bars had made special arrangements for New Year and also taken provisional licence to serve liquor. The average liquor sale in Noida and Greater Noida amounts to Rs 1.5 crore daily. The amount more than doubled on account of an increase in demand due to New Year celebrations, the official said.
Karnataka would soon be hosting its first international travel expo in order to promote its tourist hotspots to travellers from across the world, state Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge said on Tuesday.
The Karnataka government today announced that 'Karnataka International Travel Expo' (KITE) will be held here from February 28, billing it as the "largest" B2B travel event in the country. The three-day event will see close to 400 delegates from 25 countries take part. "For the first time in the country we will be having the biggest event, international expo for the tourism and travel sector," Karnataka Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge told reporters here. The aim is to project Karnataka globally and attract tourist footfall, with emphasis on promoting the state's wild life, luxury and adventure destinations, historical monuments and UNESCO world heritage sites, he said. "This will be an annual event here on, and will make a mark on the international travel expo map or circuit." Overall, a budget of Rs seven crore is expected to be spent on the event, he added. A large number of hoteliers and restaurant owners operating in Paharganj and nearby areas are angry over show-cause notices served to them by North Delhi Municipal Corporation, a federation representing them said. These notices, most of them dated December 31, 2017, have been served over "insanitary and unhygienic conditions and encroaching public land/violating terms of municipal health licence", it said. "These notices have been sent to about 150 hotels and restaurants functioning in Paharganj and nearby areas. Most of these were served on December 31, which was Sunday and without proper verification of the premises," said Arun Gupta, General Secretary of Delhi Hotel Mahasangh -- a federation claiming support of about 2,000 small guest houses in the national capital. Gupta said all hotels and restaurant owners comply with all the directives of the civil body. A Bihar minister was today allegedly manhandled by the employees of a hotel in the temple town of Tarapith in Birbhum district, a charge denied by the hotel authorities. Suresh Kumar Sharma, urban development and housing minister and a BJP MLA of Bihar, was allegedly manhandled and his men were attacked when they demanded that the booking amount be refunded, said the minister's personal secretary S Kumar. "We had booked two rooms online. But after reaching there in the afternoon, we found that the rooms were not suitable for the minister," Kumar said. The hotel was asked to make alternative arrangement but they abused the minister, he alleged. "We decided to leave the hotel and demanded refund of the booking amount but they refused and the employees attacked us," Kumar claimed.
