An international yoga festival would be held here on January four. The Directorate of Tourism of Puducherry government is holding the festival for the 24th year in succession. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy would inaugurate the festival. Yoga festival is the first event in the calendar of festivals conducted by the directorate every year in Puducherry.

The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is planning to open up a slew of citizen-focussed facilities being built at a cost of up to Rs 300 crore over the next six months, a top official has said. "Many projects are in different stages of development and nearing completion. Works of around Rs 250-300 crore will be opened before the onset of the monsoon," Sanjay Bhatia, the chairman of one of the country's oldest ports, told PTI. It can be noted that from a cargo handling perspective, the port has ceded container traffic to the JNPT located across the harbour, and is now concentrating only on handling clean cargo. Hundreds of revellers thronged the picturesque beaches in Goa last night to usher in the New Year amid the dazzling fireworks and dance parties. The roads leading to the beaches in North Goa and the highway connecting Panaji to Margao witnessed traffic jams last evening as the visitors gathered in large numbers to witness the last sunset of 2017. The 105-km long coastline of Goa turned into a party zone since the last few days with tourists pouring into the coastal state to welcome the New Year. The local Christian population attended midnight masses in various churches across the state to mark the beginning of 2018. The Goa police maintained a strict vigil along the coast. Around 300 police personnel were deployed on the Baga-Sinquerim beach belt in North Goa to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. The Thane rural police raided a resort in Shahpur area of the district late tonight as the owners hadn't taken permission for organising a New Year party. Liquor and hookah were on offer at the party. Large quantities of alcohol and hookah tobacco were seized and some persons were detained, said additional superintendent of police Prashant Kadam. Thousands of traders in Nainital today boycotted the New Year Eve celebrations and staged a candle-light march against the administration's actions on hoteliers and restrictions imposed on movement of vehicles. Unlike previous years, the celebrations on the Mall Road was dull, though, most of the hotels remained packed and visitors flocked to the popular hill station in large numbers. More than 4,000 people took out a candle-light march from Mallital to Tallital - through the Mall Road - this evening to protest against the steps taken by the town administration to regulate the movement of vehicular traffic to ease congestion. Internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnayak today claimed he has created the world's biggest sand sculpture of Lord Jagannath at Puri beach of Odisha on new year eve. Pattnayak claimed he has created the 30 ft high and 60 ft wide sand sculpture of Lord Jagannath for which about 800 tonne of sand with coloured sand were used. "This is the biggest sand sculpture of Lord Jagannath," he claimed. About 40 students of the noted sand artist joined him to complete the sculpture during the ongoing sand art festival.
Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the 11-day Vijayawada Book Festival in Vijayawada city tomorrow. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will also attend the event. This is the 29th edition of Vijayawada Book Festival, which is celebrated with the advent of New Year. It is said to be the second largest such event in the country after Kolkata Book Fair. Delhi Traffic Police has made various arrangements on routes across the city with a special focus in and around Connaught Place, in a bid to provide hassle-free experience to commuters on the eve of New Year.
