The clock tower, a prominent landmark in the city in the past and demolished adecade ago to facilitate smooth flow of traffic, is getting arebirth with the Mangaluru City Corporation including its reconstruction under the Smart City project. The new clock tower would come up exactly where it once stood near the University College, City Mayor Kavitha Sanil told reporters here. Though it was not part of the Smart City project, the tower construction was included on the insistence of the Mayor. As per the estimate, clock tower construction,including the main building, yard work, aluminium ladders,clocks and electrical installations, would cost Rs 90 lakh. The Mayor said she wanted the project to be executed on priority basis and tenders were being called for the work. The tender for the work would be opened on January 15 next year. Those with a sweet tooth will be heading to Telangana next month where the state government will be hosting an international sweets festival. The World Sweet Festival, featuring over hundreds of sweet items, will be held from January 13 to 15, a senior official said, adding a World Kite Festival will be held simultaneously. "The sweets festival aims at promoting mutual respect among people belonging to various states living in Hyderabad, by showcasing sweets from 25 states," the official said. Sweets would also be on sale at the event, to be held at the Parade Ground at Secunderabad, tourism and culture secretary B Venkatesham said in a release. India has a shortage of nearly two lakh hotel rooms and it is struggling to manage a surge in tourist arrivals, officials in the tourism ministry said. They said according to a report of the working group on tourism for the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017), for a projected annual growth of 12 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs), the projected requirement of additional hotel rooms in 2016, over 2010, was estimated to be 1,90,108. "We are plagued with a huge shortage of hotel rooms and instead of building new ones, we are trying to encourage homestays and exploring other alternatives like tying up with existing known brands with operational hotels and accrediting them," said a senior official of the ministry. The ministry of tourism is also working on creating five special tourism zones in the country so that these areas can be developed into tourist hotspots, officials said. With 2017 at its fag end, Google India has revealed that luxury, honeymoon, and safari destinations were in vogue from September to November this year witnessing 27 per cent growth in searches. As per Google data, holiday related search queries have increased 27 per cent this year for luxury, honeymoon and safari destinations. Both international and domestic luxury searches have also witnessed a growth of 34 per cent, amid online hunts for 'royal holidays', that has spiked 12 times, it added. These top travel trends were observed from September to November, highlighting the search behaviour of the Indian audience, compared with travellers' data documented during the same period in 2016.
