Colourful hues bring alive Darjeeling amid political unrest

As the Gorkhaland agitation in Darjeeling cast a shadow on the picturesque hill town, an artist sat by his window and romanced with the mountains to capture and bring alive its ethereal beauty on canvas. He picked up his brushes and created a bevy of colours of Darjeeling in its myriad forms. When life came to a standstill in the 104 days of the protests in the tourist paradise, artist Chandranath Das decided it was time to ward off the dullness and what better than putting his expressions out in his paintings. Thus was born 'Darjeeling, my Muse', a collection of a cascade of colours on canvas and paper, depicting the prayer flags, seasonal changes of nature and the yaks in the Queen of the Hills. Currently showcasing his works his Mumbai, Das feels it an opportune moment to attract visitors to Darjeeling after the political unrest and he is doing his bit for it. The vibrancy in 'Prayer of the Road', 'Solitude', 'Prachku river', 'Rhododendron', 'Returning', he feels, will

Over 2 lakh Chinese tourists visited India in 2017: Alphons

More than two lakh Chinese tourists visited India in 2017, according to data provided by the tourism ministry in Parliament today. The figures provided by Union Tourism Minister K J Alphons in the Rajya Sabha assume significance in the backdrop of India's recent standoff with China over the Dokalam issue. The number of Chinese tourists visiting India in 2015 was 2,06,322. While the figure rose to 2,51,313 in 2016, it saw a marginal dip in 2017 with 2,25,482 Chinese tourists arriving in the country, the minister said. From 2015 to 2017, there was a 9.28-per cent increase in the number of Chinese tourists arriving in India, he added. The Chinese occupied the third position as far as foreign tourist arrivals in India from the neighbouring countries were concerned, Alphons said. Bangladesh, with over 19 lakh tourists, is on top of the list, followed by Sri Lanka with nearly three lakh tourists, China, Nepal (1,51,352), Pakistan (76,197), Myanmar (48,731) and Bhutan (22,695).

About time cities liberated of 'tyranny of images': Mehrotra

There was a need to liberate city planning of the "tyranny of images", noted architect Rahul Mehrotra asserted, while lamenting that urban planners want metro cities such as Delhi and Mumbai to look like Singapore or Shanghai. He was speaking at the second Jhabvala memorial lecture here yesterday, the series instituted by the School of Planning and Architecture and the Jhabvala family. It was organised in memory of the legendary architect and professor CSH Jhabvala who had also authored the book, 'Old Delhi, New York'. "It is about time that planning for our cities is liberated of the tyranny of images," Mehrotra said. "Planners want Delhi or Mumbai to look like Singapore or Shanghai; then, Nasik wants to look like Mumbai; and, this tyranny perpetuates itself in planners' imagination-- irrespective of the needs, environment, capacities and resources," he said. The 1959-born architect, urbanist and educator, is also Professor of Urban Design and Planning and Chair of the

Saudi Arabia to launch tourist visas in early 2018

Saudi Arabia will begin issuing tourist visas in the first quarter of 2018, its top tourism official said, a first for the kingdom as it undergoes major economic and social reforms. Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz told AFP that "all government approvals" are in place for the launch of electronic visas next year to "all nationals whose countries allow their citizens to visit" Saudi Arabia. "We are now just preparing the regulations -- who is eligible for the visas and how to obtain them," added the head of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, who is a son of King Salman. The move to open up its tourism sector is a major shift for Saudi Arabia as powerful Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman seeks to radically overhaul the kingdom's oil-dependent economy and shed its ultra-conservative image.
