Ten monuments have been adopted under the central government's 'Adopt A Heritage' project, the Ministry of Culture informed the Parliament Monday. The project had come under scrutiny after the Red Fort was adopted by cement manufacturers Dalmia Group. Responding to a query in the Lok Sabha, Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said the 'Adopt A Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan' scheme, launched in September, 2017, was a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), states and Union Territories. He said it envisages development and maintenance of tourist amenities at heritage sites and makes them tourist-friendly, as well enhances the tourism potential and cultural importance in a planned and phased manner. "The project primarily focuses on providing basic amenities that include cleanliness, public conveniences, safe drinking water, ease of access for tourists, signages, illumination and wi-fi," the minister said. Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj Monday laid the foundation stone of a project to develop Kanvashram as a tourist destination, officials said. Describing it as the birthplace of King Bharat, Satpal Maharaj, accompanied by Cabinet Minister Harak Singh Rawat, said the decision to develop Kanvashram as a tourist spot was taken because of its significant history. Born to Shakuntala and Dushyant at Kanvashram, Chakravarti Samrat king Bharat's empire extended from Myanmar to Kandahar, the tourism minister said in his address on the occasion. Kanvashram is situated on the banks of River Malini in Pauri Garhwal near Kotdwara.

The over-a-century-old Ujjayanta Palace of Tripura's Manikya Kings, which houses the state museum, would be equipped with digital galleries in a bid to boost tourism, a state minister said on Monday. The palace, built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya during 1899-1901, served as the state legislative assembly till 2011. "We would soon install digital galleries in the state museum, which would make use of projectors. I think this initiative would also attract more tourists in the museum and help promoting tourism industry in the state," Tripura Higher Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath told reporters. Thousands of tourists, who have been stranded at Havelock and Neil islands in the Andamans since Friday owing to hostile weather conditions, are being brought back here, a top police officer said Sunday. The Indian Coast Guard, along with the Navy and Andaman & Nicobar (A &N) Islands administration, ferried the tourists to Port Blair in multiple vessels, DGP Deependra Pathak said. According to Met office sources, a deep depression that developed to the west of Andamans on Friday had made it difficult for ships to sail, leaving thousand of tourists marooned on the two islands, which are about 30-40 nautical miles from the capital city. "Rescue operations began on Saturday as soon as the weather showed improvement,"Pathak said, adding that the last batch of stranded tourists left for Port Blair Sunday morning, he added. On Saturday, nearly 1,100 tourists were ferried safely to Port Blair from Havelock by Coral Queen, ICG and other Naval vessels. Also, 135 guests were moved .
