The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to set up a firing range at Khalia Top, a popular tourist spot close to the India-China border near Munsiyari in this district of Uttarakhand. It will be the first major strategic infrastructure project to come up on the Indian side close to the border after the India-China war of 1962, officials associated with the proposal said. "The IAF needs a firing range in this area because of security reasons and Khalia Top near Munsiyari town fits the bill with its perfect altitude," Air Marshal Devender Singh Rawat said. Located at a height of 12,500 feet which is the standard parameter set for firing ranges, Khalia Top is the ideal site for the project, he said. With a message of environmental awareness, the 16th edition of 'Eco Pad-Yatra', led by Buddhist spiritual leaders Gyalwang Drukpa and Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche of Hemis Monastery, will start from Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. In its 13th year, the 140-km yatra will see participants including over 350 monks travel by foot through five important Buddhist sites -- Bhubaneswar, Udayagiri, Dhauli, Lalitgiri and Ratnagiri. One person died while nine others were seriously injured after a jeep in which they were travelling fell into a gorge here on Sunday.The incident took place near Gulaba on Manali-Rohtang road in Himachal Pradesh.The tourists were travelling from Tata Sumo Jeep when at the top of the 14th turn, the jeep fell into the gorge. A tourist died on the spot, while nine other people were injured.Those injured were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital for the treatment.According to the police, all these tourists are residents of Kolkata. Assistant sub-inspector Prem Singh Chauhan and Sub-inspector Yogendra Singh are present at the spot.
Four unnamed Himalayan peaks near Gangotri glacier have been named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The peaks are located at6,557, 6,566, 6,160 and 6,100metres on the right flank of Gangotri glacier, said Colonel Amit Bisht, principal of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and leader of the mountain climbing team which recently scaled the newly named peaks, on Saturday. The team, which returned after the climb, had hoisted the national tricolour on each of the peaks. Located near Sudarshan and Saifi peaks in Raktvan valley, the peaks have been named Atal-1, 2, 3 and 4, Bisht said. The expedition was flagged off from Dehradun on October 4 by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat. The expedition was jointly conducted by NIM and the tourism department.
Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik Thursday flagged off five more refurbished tourist patrol vans of the Police Control Room (PCR) here, taking the number of such specially designed vehicles to 15, a statement said. According to the statement, induction of these vans will bolster the strength of the tourist police unit, which is already operating 10 tourist patrol vehicles at as many locations in the city. The refurbished tourist patrol vans will be more conspicuous with pictures of important tourist places depicted on either side, the statement said. The tourist police personnel will also be wearing yellow-maroon coloured badge with Tourist Police LOGO on their left arm, it said.
