According to official sources, the two ministers would fly down to Karnataka to attend the last rites of the Lingayat seer Shivakumar Swamy. The 111-year old head of the Siddaganga mutt in Karnataka, known as 'Walking God' among his countless followers, died Monday after prolonged illness.

Nation has lost great spiritual leader in Shivakumara Swami: RSS chief

Stating that the nation had lost a great spiritual leader, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat Monday expressed grief on the passing away of Shivakumara Swami of Sri Siddaganga Mutt. "I am deeply grieved by the passing away of Jagadguru Parampujya Dr Shivakumara Swami of Sri Siddaganga Mutt, who was considered as verily the God walking on earth," he said in a statement. "Our nation in general and Hindu Society in particular has lost a great spiritual leader and social reformer par excellence," he added. The 111-year-old head of Siddaganga Mutt passed away on Monday in Tumkuru in Karnataka. "Our second Sarasanghchalak Parampujya Guruji was very close to Swami ji and shared with him many spiritual and social concerns of our nation and society," the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief said. "RSS remembers with deep reverence the long association it had with Swami ji and the guidance he gave us," Bhagwat added. Zoo officials form team to probe man's killing by lions

A day after a man was mauled to death by lions at Chhatbir Zoo in Zirakpur, authorities here have formed a team to probe the incident. On Sunday, the man entered the enclosure by scaling a 25-feet wall and as soon as he crossed over, he was attacked by a lion and a lioness. "We have formed a five-member team to probe the incident. It will find out how this incident happened and what was the motive of the man? It will also suggest measures to be taken to prevent such incidents in future," said Zoo Field Director M Sudhagarb. "It will also probe any lapse on the part of any zoo official," he said, adding that the team will submit its report within five days. Sudhagarb said the lion and the lioness which killed the man were kept under observation. "They will be kept under observation for two to three days to check any behavioural change in them," he said. President to confer national awards to children tomorrow

President Ram Nath Kovind will confer the national awards to 26 shortlisted children Tuesday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Women and Child Development Ministry said. This year's award function was mired in controversy after the government dissociated itself from the NGO Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) that has been organising the award since 1957 over financial embezzlement. The ICCW had shortlisted 21 children for this year's national awards whose names have been sent to the Prime Minister's Office, but no response has been received, ICCW president Gita Siddhartha said. Boo, the world's cutest dog, has died of a "broken heart" after his companion died last year, his owners claimed. The Pomeranian Boo and his companion Buddy became internet sensations when their American owners started sharing pictures of their adorable antics. Boo and Buddy lived together for 11 years. Singer Justin Timberlake visited a children's hospital after their plea to meet the pop star went viral. US-based Indian poet Ranjani Murali received the 'Woman's Voice Award' at the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF) here. Murali received the award on Sunday, the last day of the literary festival. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh apart from a citation. Punjab: Man mauled to death by lions in zoo

A man was mauled to death by lions at the Chhatbir Zoo in Zirakpur area of Punjab on Sunday afternoon."It was an unfortunate incident. Around 2:20 pm, our patrolling team got information that a person jumped the wall and entered inside the compound," the zoo's filed director M Sudhagar said."Immediately our guards informed about this to animal management and security management team. Soon they reached the spot and stopped proving the car services. After reaching there, the team saw that the lion was holding the man through his neck," added Sudhagar.The patrolling team later went inside the compound and brought the man out. He was later shifted to a nearby hospital."We immediately took the man to a nearby government hospital after seeing that his condition is really critical. Later he died in the hospital," the official said. The victim has not yet been identified.

TN bull taming event enters world record

A grand "jallikattu" (bull-taming) event held here Sunday entered the world record for the maximum number of bulls released into the sporting arena which was over 1,300 and almost double than the previous record. The bull taming sporting event, coordinated by Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar at Viralimalai near here saw the participation of 1,354 bulls and 424 tamers. Two of the participants were killed in the event while 31 men including some spectators were injured, according to the district police. "The number of 1,354 bulls that participated was almost double (than the previous record) of 647 two years ago and it is an amazing record for Tamil Nadu," a Worldkings World Records Union representative said. Although about 2,000 bulls were originally scheduled to be released into the sprawling sporting arena, it could not be completed owing to paucity of time, the organisers said.
