Kin of police personnel killed in line of duty set to get Rs 70 lakh

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to give an enhanced compensation to the next of kin of police officers killed in the line of duty while dealing with violence and militancy-related incidents, an official said Tuesday. For police officers, the ex-gratia has been hiked to Rs 70 lakh from the existing Rs 48 lakh in case of death in militancy-related incidents, GAD Commissioner-Secretary Hilal Ahmad said in an order here. For Special Police Officers (SPOs), the ex-gratia has been increased to Rs 30 lakh from the existing Rs 14.50 lakh, he said. In his order, Ahmad said the ex-gratia has been increased to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 2 lakh under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE), which will be payable to the next of kin of J&K police personnel, SPOs and CAPFs and Army personnel. Burglary at residence of media advisor to Ravi Shankar Prasad

The residence of the media advisor to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was allegedly burgled in Rohini and about Rs 50,000 in cash and other valuable items were stolen, police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred on the intervening night of September 24 and 25, they said. Muslim group moves SC against triple talaq ordinance

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Triple Talaq ordinance which was passed by the Union Cabinet last week.Kerala-based, Samastha Kerala Jam'eyyath ul-Ulama, a religious organisation of the Sunni Muslim scholars and clerics has filed the petition against the ordinance which criminalises Triple Talaq.The ordinance or an Executive order criminalising Triple Talaq was passed by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 19.Triple Talaq, or verbal divorce, is often practised by a section in the Muslim community in India to instantly divorce their wives by uttering the word 'Talaq' three times. The practice has been decried by several Muslim and women organisations, over the years, calling it un-Islamic and anti-women.

Bihar: Parents donate deceased son's organs

In a humanitarian move, parents of a 19-year-old boy in Bihar's Nalanda district have donated their son's eyes, heart and liver after he died in an accident.Experts from New Delhi's Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) and Kolkata's R N Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Science retrieved Saurabh Pratik's liver and heart respectively at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna. Women can now get sanitary napkins at a subsidised rate from vending machines installed at 14 public toilets in south Delhi markets, the area's civic body said Monday. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said out of these toilets, three are 'pink toilets' -- meant exclusively for women. "Sanitary vending machines at 14 toilets situated in various markets were today made functional. The rest 11 toilets are partially being converted into pink toilets (painted pink) as well," the SDMC said in a statement. "Napkins will be easily available at a subsidised rate of Rs 5 from the vending machines. The toilets are also being provided with incinerator machines for decimation of the used napkins. This was felt necessary to ensure cleanliness in and around the toilets," it said. Father, son die after their car falls into drain in Amritsar

A man and his son were killed when their car fell into a village drain, near 35 km away from here, police said Monday. The accident took place last night when the car was passing through a flyover which was without iron-railing support, they said.
