US House bans eating of dogs and cats
The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a legislation prohibiting slaughter of cats and dogs for human consumption. The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act, 2018, imposes a fine of USD 5,000 (over Rs 3,50,000) for each violation. In another resolution, the House has urged all countries including China, South Korea and India to end the dog and cat meat trade. "Dogs and cats are meant for companionship and recreation. Tragically, more than 10 million dogs are killed for human consumption every year in China," said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. There is no place in our compassionate society for these practices. This bill is a reflection of America's values, and sends a strong message to all nations that we will not stand for this inhumane and cruel treatment," she said. Three members of a family allegedly ended their lives in city's Naroda locality Wednesday, with a purported suicide note saying one of them was under the influence of "black magic". Kunal Trivedi (50), his wife Kavita Trivedi (45) and their daughter Shrin Trivedi (16) were found to have hanged themselves at their house, a Naroda police station official said. "We recovered a suicide note, which appears to be penned by Kunal Trivedi, saying he was under the influence of black magic," inspector H B Vaghela said, adding that the note has been sent to the forensic laboratory to verify the handwriting. The paroles of jailed former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd.) Muhammad Safdar have been extended by three more days, the Punjab provincial government announced on Wednesday.The trio was released on a 12-hour parole in the wee hours of Wednesday following the demise of Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz. Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Wednesday said formulation of rules for pet shops would act as a major deterrent to animal cruelty in trading of pets. The Centre has notified rules to regulate pet shops under which such establishments will have to get a certificate of registration from the State Animal Welfare Board. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018, notified by the Environment Ministry, every pet shop registered under it will have to submit a report to the state board annually with information regarding the total number of "animals sold, traded, bartered, brokered, given away, boarded, exhibited, died or euthanised," during the previous year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the death of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, saying he would always cherish the memories of his interaction with the wife of Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, according to a media report.
