The Odisha government today announced a cash award of Rs 1.5 crore for sprinter Dutee Chand, a day after she clinched silver at women's 100 metre dash at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who congratulated Chand yesterday soon after she sprinted to glory, said "it was a matter of pride" that an athlete from Odisha has brought laurels to the country. "In recognition of her grit and determination, the chief minister has announced a cash award of Rs 1.5 crore to Dutee Chand," a statement issued by Patnaik's office said. A pocket watch that was recovered from a passenger who died on the Titanic has sold at auction for USD 57,500. Heritage Auctions says the watch, sold yesterday, had been recovered from a 34-year-old passenger named Sinai Kantor. Kantor was a Russian immigrant who managed to get his wife, Miriam, to a lifeboat before he died in icy waters after the ship hit an iceberg. Kantor's body was later pulled from the Atlantic Ocean. He was buried in New York. The pocket watch was sold by a direct descendant of Miriam and Sinai Kantor. It was bought by a collector of timepieces connected to the famous 1912 sinking.
In a tragic incident, two teenaged brothers drowned in the Mandakini river while performing a ritual on Raksha Bandhan here today, police said. According to the police, Shyamu Verma (17) and Bhanu Verma (15) had gone to the river along with their sister to perform 'Kajli Visarjan', a ritual performed in the Bundelkhand region before a sister ties 'rakhi' on a brother's wrist. During the ceremony, Shyamu slipped and fell in the river. Bhaju jumped into the river in a bid to save his brother. Unfortunately, both of them drowned in the river, a police officer said. The incident took place in Kashai village under Karwi police station limit. The bodies have been fished out and sent for post-mortem, the police officer said.
In an unusual move, a top Pakistan Railways official has requested for a 730-day full pay leave, saying the attitude of new minister for railways Sheikh Rasheed is "extremely non-professional and ill-mannered". Hanif Gul, a Grade-20 officer, said in his application letter that as an honourable member of the Civil Services of Pakistan, it is not possible for him to continue to work under him, Geo news reported.
