A 30-year old police sub-inspector and his mother escaped after their car plunged into a canal but the man allegedly drowned minutes later while trying to recover a bag from the vehicle today in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, police said. The car in which Vamsidhar and his mother were travelling went out of control and fell into the irrigation canal apparently after one of its tyres got punctured, they said. The SI managed to jump to safety and als helped his mother to come out. But tragedy struck soon as he drowned after entering the waters to recover the bag from the sinking car, they said. Vamsidhar and his mother who hailed from Koduru village were returning home after attending a wedding when the mishap occurred, police said.
For the first time, the government has invited nominations for national CSR awards. The Corporate Affairs Ministry would give awards for CSR works under the Companies Act, according to a release. Under the Act, certain class of profitable companies are required to shell out at least two per cent of their three-year annual average net profit towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. Entries for nominations for the first National CSR awards have been invited from ministries and departments of central and state governments, union territories, the release issued today said. Besides, professional institutions -- ICSI, ICAI, ICMAI -- as well as and national level trade and industry chambers. "There are a total 20 number of prizes for national CSR awards," the release said. A nominating organisation can nominate up to 10 entries in all categories of awards. The last date for submissions is September 30.

Former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan will receive a state funeral and burial in Ghana on September 13, the Ghanaian president said today, calling it "a major event for our country". The announcement was made by President Nana Akufo-Addo following a meeting with Annan's family in Accra.
