Belgian pigeon flies high in record 1.25 million euros auction

A star racing pigeon named Armando has fetched a record 1.25 million euros in an online auction, Belgian media has reported. The prized bird -- Belgian's best long-distance racer of all time according to those in the know -- was snapped up by a Chinese buyer for a princely sum that caused a flutter of excitement among fanciers. Armando had been expected to break the previous record of 376,000 euros ($425,000) paid for a pigeon called Nadine -- but not by such a wide margin. "Earlier this week it became clear that Armando would be the most expensive pigeon ever sold in an online auction," specialist website Pigeon Paradise wrote. "However, no one expected that the magical cap of a million euros would be pulverised," it added. The final amount was 1,252,000 euros. Pigeon Paradise did not say who had bought the pigeon, but according to the Belgian news agency Belga it was a Chinese buyer who will no doubt use his new acquisition to breed other champions. Chinese man arrested for flying drone over Victoria Memorial

A Chinese national was arrested on Sunday for allegedly flying a drone over the iconic Victoria Memorial here, police said. Li Zhiwei, 34, was apprehended by CISF personnel after they spotted the drone over the memorial's dome, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. "The Chinese man arrived in the city from Malaysia on Friday. He has been arrested and we are trying to ascertain his true intention of flying the drone," he told PTI. "We have the Eastern Command's headquarters and the Fort William only a few metres from the Victoria Memorial. And, one needs special permission to fly drones in this sensitive area. He had no such permission," the officer added. Li has been sent to police custody till March 25.

The government announced national mourning on Monday as Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar died this evening, officials said. A Home Ministry spokesperson said the national flag will fly at half-mast in the national capital, the union territories and the state capitals. Infant dies in house fire in J&K's Baramulla

An 11-month-old baby died after his home caught fire in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday. The house belonging to Maqbool Ahmad in Uri caught fire due to unknown reasons, a police spokesperson said. Umeed Ahmad, son of the house owner, died in the incident, he added. Scions of princely states likely to join Odisha poll fray

The coming simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections in Odisha are likely to witness scions of erstwhile princely states join the poll fray as in the past. Dog that completed Iditarod sled race dies of pneumonia

Iditarod race officials say a dog on a racer's team has died of pneumonia, and the crew has been withdrawn from the event. In a statement, the Iditarod organization announced that Oshi, a 5-year-old female on the race team of Richie Beattie died Saturday evening at an animal hospital in Anchorage from aspiration pneumonia. Beattie and his team finished the race on Thursday. The organization says that while carrying out post-race checkups, Iditarod Trail Committee veterinarians examining Oshi noticed signs of pneumonia. The dog was transported by emergency charter flight to Anchorage on Friday. The dog died the next day.
