India had locked their number four and number five slot for the ODI World Cup almost 18 months ago but injuries to three batters in quick succession threw a spanner in their works, coach Rahul Dravid said on Tuesday. Dravid said that injuries to the likes of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant forced the team management to try out other players in the middle-order in recent times, and it was not experimenting just for the sake of it. "The No 4 and 5 spots are discussed a lot and gives the impression that we didn't have clarity that who is going to be there. I could have told you 18-19 months ago who the three candidates for the two spots were. "It was always between Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. There was not doubt," Dravid said at India's pre-departure presser ahead of the Asia Cup. "It's unfortunate that all three had injuries in the space of two months. What are the odds of that happening. All three guys pushing for those two spots, had serious injuries, had to go
Rohit Sharma traded caution with aggression to add a different dimension to his batting and the Indian skipper is happy with the results even if it means not getting those daddy hundreds. At the end of the 2019 World Cup, Rohit had scored 27 hundreds but in the last four years he could add only three more centuries to his tally. The captain largely believes that this is because of the high-risk game he has adopted. "I wanted to take more risks, which is why my numbers are slightly different now," Rohit told PTI during an exclusive interview. "My (ODI) strike-rate (during this period) has increased but the average has dipped a bit. This is exactly what our batting coach (Vikram Rathour) was telling me, You have scored big runs because of the way you batted all these years and in the last few years, it (big runs) has not happened because you are taking risk," the skipper added. Rohit is the only player to have scored three double hundreds -- 209 (vs Australia, 2013), 264 (vs Sri Lank
Former captain of Indian women's cricket team Mithali Raj on Sunday said Men in Blue' have a big opportunity to lift the ICC World Cup in home conditions later this year. The global showpiece event will be played in India across October and November, and the hosts are aiming to bag another World Cup after winning it in 1983 and 2011. As an Indian cricket fan, I would want India to play in the final. It is a big opportunity. We are the host nation and the conditions are in our favour. "If they (team) do well, we will get another opportunity to lift the World Cup, Mithali, who was here to witness the Women's Premier League final, told reporters. Mithali, the highest run-scorer in WODIs with 7805 runs, said women's cricket has a lot of potential to grow in the valley. For past two to three years, the BCCI has been making lot of efforts to promote the women's game and women players. "The WIPL this year has also gone well and it is good for the sports profile. We hope that many player
Virat Kohli would be the perfect answer for India's No.4 conundrum at the World Cup as he can put the innings together and play any kind of role in the middle order, feels South Africa great AB de Villiers. India have struggled to find a suitable No.4 ever since Yuvraj Singh retired from cricket. With the 50-over World Cup less than two months away, there has been a lot of discussion around who will bat at the spot. "We're still talking about who will be the No. 4 batter for India. I've heard some rumours about Virat possibly taking up that position. I would be a big supporter of that," de Villiers said on his Youtube channel. "I think Virat is perfect for No. 4. He can put the innings together, play any kind of role in that middle order. I don't know if he would like to do that. "We know he loves his No. 3 position; he's scored all his runs there, but at the end of the day, if the team needs you to do something, play a certain role, you have got to put your hand up and got for it,
Netherlands might be entering the ICC World Cup 2023 as rank outsiders, but their coach Ryan Cook is banking on camps in India and practice matches to make an impact in the quadrennial extravaganza. Netherlands will arrive in India mid-September to have an acclimatization camp in Bengaluru, where they will play a couple of local sides. Following that, they will face India and Australia in the pre-tournament warm-up matches at Thiruvananthapuram. Cook hoped that the time spent in India would blend with his team's inherent desire to win matches. "We are preparing as hard as we can. There will be a couple of camps and practice matches in India. We hope they will serve us well in the tournament proper. Once you enter the tournament, it will be inspirational for everyone to do well," Cook said on Saturday while addressing a select media gathering. The Dutchmen qualified for the World Cup earlier in July ahead of teams like two-time champions West Indies. However, since that day they h
The much-delayed sale of tickets for the ODI World Cup began on Friday but fans had a tough time booking them with the official website not working for a good 35 to 40 minutes. The opening day of ticket sales was reserved for non-India matches, including the warm-ups. However, the process stared at 8 pm local time and soon after fans complained of the 'Bookmyshow' application crashing amid a mad rush to book the tickets. 'Bookmyshow' is the ticketing partner for the World Cup beginning October 5. "This is really frustrating - after such a delayed announcement of ticket sales, if the basic systems infrastructure is not in place, it speaks very poorly of the mighty BCCI and ICC. Events like these are organised world over and systems like lotteries and ticket queues are common. Why are those not in pace for such a large event," Delhi-based fan Atirav Kapur told PTI on Friday. Half hour into the ticket sales, the website started working but by then a chunk of the fans had lost their ..

New Zealand have roped in the services of former skipper Stephen Fleming and the English duo of Ian Bell and James Foster as part of their coaching staff in the lead up to the ODI World Cup in India. Both Fleming and former wicketkeeper Foster come with IPL coaching experience that may help the Black Caps during the World Cup, starting October 5. Fleming has been coaching the Chennai Super Kings for over a decade and has guided the MS Dhoni-led side to five IPL titles. He will join the Black Caps for the ODI series against England after finishing his duties with the Southern Brave men in The Hundred next month. "I think Flem will be great for players on that side of it and also good for the staff as well," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. "He's got immense amount of knowledge in that part of the world [India] and has coached in the IPL right from the start of the competition, so he's coached in all those areas where we're going to play in. "S
An annoyed Sunil Gavaskar pleaded with those questioning the Indian team selection for the upcoming Asia Cup and asserted that this 17-man squad should form the nucleus of the 15-member World Cup side. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission from the squad, leaving India with only one wrist spinner in Kuldeep Yadav. Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are the other spin bowling options in the squad that was named on Monday. Few also wondered why senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is also a very useful batter lower down the order, was not picked in the side. "Yes, there are a few players who will believe that they are lucky. But the team is selected. So don't talk about Ashwin. Stop creating controversy. This is our team now. "If you don't like it, don't watch the matches but stop saying that he should have been picked or another should be there, this is a wrong mindset," Gavaskar told 'Aaj Tak'. Both Jadeja and Axar have also proved their batting abilities across .
With the World Cup less than two months away, New Zealand pace spearhead Tim Southee says the upcoming Asia Cup will be a big part of India's preparations for the showpiece, while admitting that scheduling of T20 competitions has made it difficult for teams to align resources. India announced an extended 17-member squad for the Asia Cup starting August 30, including Sanju Samson as travelling stand-by player since KL Rahul the preferred wicketkeeper-batter at No. 5 has picked up a niggle to his original injury. "I guess ideally you want to play as much as you can together and to lead into a World Cup. But I think you look at the Asia Cup, and what better place to have your team together around that? "I'd imagine that is going to be a big part of the Indian team's preparation at the Asia Cup," Southee told the media here on the sidelines of the Ceat Cricket Rating Award on Monday. Southee also backed the Indian batters to have plans against left-arm pace, while acknowledging the r
The Indian cricket board on Monday officially turned down the request of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) to change the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule. The HCA had appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a change in schedule after the local police authorities expressed their reservations about deploying adequate personnel on back-to-back match days. "BCCI secretary Jay Shah held a meeting with HCA officials in Delhi after the Asia Cup team selection meeting (for which the secretary is convenor) and the state unit was categorically told that no changes would be entertained after a revised schedule was issued on August 9," a BCCI source informed. The BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla had already indicated on Sunday that "changes (to the schedule) were unlikely." The World Cup schedule, which was first released on June 27 in Mumbai amidst fanfare, went through a lot of changes with dates and timings of as many as nine games, including the marquee India vs
Terming Suryakumar Yadav "a big temptation", former India player Sanjay Manjrekar on Sunday said deciding on the prolific T20I batter's selection is "one loose end" the home team will need to tie up before the ODI World Cup. While Suryakumar has been dominating the T20 format for a while now, he has not quite lived up to the expectations in the 50-over game, the World Cup of which will be hosted by India in October-November. Speaking to Star Sports, Manjrekar shared his opinion on whether Suryakumar should play in the tournament. "I think most issues seem to address that the batter is in pretty good form. India of course have to ponder on the Suryakumar Yadav case because 50 overs cricket is not quite making the same impact but he will be such a big temptation on a big stage when he walks in with just 15-17 overs left in the innings, can be a game changer. "So that is an issue India need to sort of finalise whether they want , Suryakumar Yadav, so that is one loose end they need to
Hosting two World Cup games in as many days is not ideal for organisational as well as security reasons, said a Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) official on Sunday but BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla was clear that any further tweak in schedule is "unlikely". After a much-delayed schedule announcement in June, the BCCI and ICC rescheduled as many as nine games earlier this month, including the marquee clash between India and Pakistan. With the Indo-Pak fixture in Ahmedabad advanced by a day on October 15, Pakistan's game against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad was moved to October 10 from October 12. The HCA is also hosting New Zealand versus Netherlands on October 9. Now, with Hyderabad police expressing its reservations on providing security for back-to-back games, the HCA had sought another change in schedule, wanting a gap of at least a day between the two games. "I can't say it would be changed for sure but back to back games are not ideal. I mean if they (BCCI) are reconsidering

Former Australian cricketer Mike Hussey believes spinner Adam Zampa and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will play a crucial role in the team's bid to clinch the World Cup in India later this year. Leg-spinner Zampa, 31, was first picked in Australia's limited-overs squad in 2016 and since then has played 79 ODIs taking 131 wickets. With Indian conditions expected to favour spin bowling, Hussey believes Zampa would be the go-to bowler for Pat Cummins' side. The wrist spinner with a skidding stock delivery played a vital role in Australia's maiden T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE in 2021, finishing with 13 wickets at an economy rate of just 5.81. "Adam Zampa could play a big role for Australia throughout the tournament," said Hussey on Friday. "He has been really good over the last few years." The former cricketer added that the confidence with which Marsh is playing, he could have an enormous impact on the team's fortunes. "And I think Mitch Marsh is someone that can certainly have a b
Injured Australian stalwarts Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc will miss the limited-overs tour of South Africa but are expected to be fit for the ODI series in India ahead of the World Cup. Australia captain Pat Cummins is recovering from a wrist fracture suffered during the Ashes in England, while Smith is nursing a tendon injury on his left wrist, which has sidelined him for four weeks, according to Cricket Australia. Both will miss the three T20Is in South Africa from August 30 to September 3, which will be followed by five ODIs from September 7-17. The pair will return for the three-match ODI series against India beginning September 22 along with left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Starc, who is also not in the squad for the South Africa series. Starc, who played a crucial role in Australia's 2-1 ODI series victory against India in March, suffered "groin soreness" upon his return from the Ashes, where he also suffered a shoulder injury. Australia have included tall left-arm quick Spen
