World Cup: Shastri, Sandeep Patil back Tilak Varma for Indian middle-order

Former stars Ravi Shastri and Sandeep Patil on Friday batted for the inclusion of the talented Tilak Varma in India's middle-order for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The mega event will be held in India from October 5 to November 19. Shastri said the 20-year-old Varma is at an advantageous position because he is a left-hander. Speaking on Star Sports, Shastri said, "I'm very impressed with Tilak Varma. Very, very impressed. And I want a left-hander. So, if I'm looking for a left-hander in the middle order, like Yuvraj Singh and before that was Suresh Raina at five, I would really look in that direction (of Varma). "Sandy (Sandip) and MSK (Prasad) have been selectors, and if I was a selector along with my panel, I would be looking at that current form, looking at how he's getting his runs. "So, when I look at the way he has got his runs over the last three months, whether it was for Mumbai Indians, for India, whether it was handling pressure, opposition, or different situatio

Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan best for middle-order, feels Saba Karim

Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim has backed Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan as the best replacement options at number 4 and 5 if the first-choice players are not fit in time for the Asia Cup and World Cup. India are expected to announce the squad for the Asia Cup in a few days and it remains to be seen if the preferred choices in Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul make the cut. The selectors should take KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer into consideration they can be included in the team if they are fit. But the wait has not ended, the team will be announced on the 20th from what I know, they have the time until then, Karim told the media during a chat organised by Jio Cinema. But if they are not fit, Ishan Kishan is a good option against Rahul since he can bat as an opener and in the middle-order, he added. While Karim named three players for the No 5 slot, he said senior batter Suryakumar would be his first preference. If Shreyas Iyer is not fit, you have 2-3 options to pick from, in Tila

IND vs IRE: Bumrah kept thinking about World Cup prep throughout injury

After spending 11 months away from the game, a fit-again Jasprit Bumrah is back hungrier than ever and says he is ready to bowl long spells for India in the Asia Cup and subsequent ODI World Cup at home. Bumrah, who last played in September 2022 before lower-back stress fractures pushed him on the sidelines for the "biggest break" of his cricketing career, is making his much-anticipated comeback with the T20 series in Ireland. Here, he will be required to bowl four overs per game but speaking ahead of the first T20 on Friday, the star pacer said the plan was always to prepare for 50-over events including the Asia Cup beginning August 31 and the World Cup at home beginning October 5. "We were mindful of the fact there is no Test cricket till the ODI World Cup. In my rehab as well, I was not preparing for a T20 game. I was always preparing for the World Cup competition. "I have been bowling 10, 12 and even 15 overs. So I have bowled more overs, that way it becomes easier when less ..

World Cup: New Zealand to tour Bangladesh for three ODIs for preparations

New Zealand will tour Bangladesh for the first time in 10 years, when they travel to the country for a split ODI and Test series in September and November. The three-match ODI series will be the dress rehearsal for the two teams ahead of the World Cup in India. The World Cup begins with last edition's runners-up New Zealand taking on defending champions England in Ahmedabad in a repeat of the 2019 final. Bangladesh begin their World Cup journey against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamsala. As per the itinerary unveiled by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday, the tour is set to commence on September 21. All three ODIs are scheduled to take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The Test series is scheduled to start in late November following the conclusion of the World Cup. The venues for both Tests will be announced later. The second leg of the tour will be part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. The red-ball clashes will take place after th

IND, PAK will struggle to match power hitting skills of other teams: Latif

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif believes that Asian teams including Pakistan and India will find it tough to match the power hitting skills of other teams in the upcoming ODI World Cup. In an interview to the Cricket Baaz Youtube channel on Wednesday, Latif said the likes of England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa would bring something new with their approach in the 50-over showpiece scheduled in India from October 5-November 19. The one area where I feel Asian teams will struggle to match these sides are particularly in the middle overs when a fast strike rate is required even in 50-overs, said the former wicket-keeper batter. "The English, Australian and New Zealand batters have turned to reverse sweep and switch shots against the spinners into something very lethal nowadays. He also noted that England in particular were also well versed in using their spinners in the middle overs. A bowler like Adil Rashid or someone like Moeen Ali buy their wickets whereas our ..

World Cup: Ravi Shastri bats for three left-handers in India's middle-order

Former head coach Ravi Shastri feels three left-hand batters in the top seven will bolster India's middle-order ahead of the Asia Cup and subsequent ODI World Cup at home. Shastri said India can have two more left-handed batters alongside all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. "There are three other positions where I think two left-handers have to come in. Now, this is where the selectors' role comes in because they are watching. They know who's the guy who's hot. If Tilak Varma is hot, bring him in. If you think (Yashasvi) Jaiswal is hot, bring him in," Shastri told Star Sports. Two right-handers, K L Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, are expected to make a comeback from injury in the Asia Cup beginning August 31, making it tougher for the management to include three left-handers in the playing eleven. Shastri also backed Ishan Kishan to come good. "If you have persisted with Ishan Kishan for the last six to eight months, and he's going to keep wickets, he comes in, in any case. But, get two ...

NZ pacer Trent Boult keen to lift World Cup after misses in 2015, 2019

Trent Boult went through the misery of being part of the New Zealand teams that finished as runners-up in two successive World Cups -- 2015 and 2019, and now the pacer does not want another chance to go begging later this year in India. New Zealand were beaten by Australia in the 2015 final, and the Kiwis could not go past England four years later. "I have always had this in the back of my mind to come back and work towards an ODI World Cup. There's history involved there. The times we have had in previous campaigns have been very exciting. "So, (I am) just hungry to get involved, and hopefully play a big role. I'm just thinking about lifting something shiny that we were pretty close to four years ago. That's the biggest focus," Boult was quoted as saying in ESPNCricinfo. Boult returned to the New Zealand ODI squad after a hiatus of one year for the series against England. Boult had also given up his national contract to focus more on T20 franchise cricket. "It wasn't an easy dec

ICC ODI World Cup 2023: India desperate to win ICC title - Rohit Sharma

Skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday said India are "desperate" to break their ICC trophy drought in the upcoming World Cup and are armed with "inner "confidence" and "self-belief" to win the title. India have gone without a trophy in ICC events for a decade now, with their last major win coming in the Champions Trophy 2013, two years after their World Cup triumph at home. "Honestly, I have never won a (50 overs) World Cup, it's a dream to win a World Cup and to be here fighting for it nothing makes me happier than that," Rohit told the media here on the sidelines of an event. "You don't get World Cups on a platter, you have to really work hard and that is what we have been doing all these years from 2011 till now we all are fighting for it," the India captain said. "Everyone is desperate to go and win, because we know we have a good team. We are all good players, that inner confidence and self-belief is there that they can do it. It's not happened doesn't mean that we take it lightly.

Rohit admits No. 4 slot in ODIs issue for India ahead of Asia Cup, WC

No batter has succeeded in settling into the vital number four slot in the Indian ODI team since the retirement of Yuvraj Singh, captain Rohit Sharma said on Thursday, rasing serious concerns before the World Cup. With the 50-over World Cup less than two months away, India are struggling to find a batter for the No. 4 slot, something that has also troubled them in the previous edition in 2019 in England. Shreyas Iyer, who is on a comeback trail after a long injury layoff, did well in his 20 matches at No. 4, scoring 805 runs at 47.35 with two centuries and five fifties. "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. "But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well his numbers are really good," Rohit told reporters on the sidelines of a La Liga event here. "Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is ...

The Tilak Varma question: Ashwin, Jaffer want him Indian team for World Cup

Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the national selectors and team management to show faith in talented Tilak Varma and include him in the World Cup squad as he could possibly be the answer to India's middle-order woes with multiple batters still recovering from injuries. There is a strong buzz that in case Shreyas Iyer doesn't recover before the Asia Cup, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee could pull Varma out of Asian Games squad and get him ready for the World Cup by playing him in the continental event beginning August 30. Ashwin's comments were also backed by former chairman of selectors MSK Prasad, who wouldn't mind seeing Varma in the final 15, provided Shreyas Iyer fails to make the cut. The 20-year-old stylish Hyderabad left-hander has impressed one and all with scores of 39, 50 and 49 not out in three T20I games in the West Indies and not for once looked out of place at the international level. "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So,

ODI World Cup: New Zealand haven't ruled out Williamson from their plans

New Zealand have not ruled out the recovering Kane Williamson from the ODI World Cup in India even if it means missing the first few fixtures. Head coach Gary Stead and the team management are optimistic about Williamson's recovery. The star batter hasn't played any cricket since March when he ruptured the ACL in his right knee while fielding for Gujarat Titans. He underwent surgery in April and has recently begun training and batting in the nets. The 33-year-old is also set to link up with the team during its series against England next month ahead of the World Cup. "Kane's working on a day-by-day, week-by-week process and we've been really clear and careful with him that we don't look too far ahead and get expectations too big or not big enough at times as well," Stead told reporters on Wednesday. "We will take every measure we can to make sure that we get the medical advice that lines up and he's where we want him to be before we make that call on whether he goes (to India for
