Federal agents must limit tear gas use at Portland ICE protests, says judge

Federal officers are temporarily restricted from using tear gas at protests outside a Portland immigration building, a judge in Oregon ruled on Tuesday, days after agents fired gas into a crowd of demonstrators that local officials described as peaceful and which included young children. US District Judge Michael Simon ordered federal officers to not use chemical or projectile munitions unless the person targeted poses an imminent threat of physical harm. Simon also limited federal officers from firing munitions at the head, neck or torso "unless the officer is legally justified in using deadly force against that person." Simon, whose temporary restraining order is in effect for 14 days, wrote that the nation "is now at a crossroads." "In a well-functioning constitutional democratic republic, free speech, courageous news gathering, and non-violent protest are all permitted, respected, and even celebrated," he wrote. "In helping our nation find its constitutional compass, an impartia

US judge refuses to block Trump admin's 7-day notice rule for ICE visits

A US federal judge Monday refused to temporarily block the Trump administration from enforcing a new policy requiring a week's notice before members of Congress can visit immigration detention facilities. District Judge Jia Cobb in Washington concluded that the Department of Homeland Security didn't violate an earlier court order when it reimposed a seven-day notice requirement for congressional oversight visits to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. Cobb said she wasn't ruling on whether the new policy passes legal muster. Rather, she said, plaintiffs' attorneys representing several Democratic members of Congress used the wrong "procedural vehicle" to challenge it. The judge also concluded that the January 8 policy is a new agency action that isn't subject to her prior order in the plaintiffs' favour. Plaintiffs' lawyers asked Cobb to intervene after three Democratic members of Congress from Minnesota were blocked from visiting an ICE facility near Minneapolis ..

Clashes erupt between pro-and anti-ICE demonstrators in Minneapolis

Protesters for and against the Trump administration's latest immigration crackdown clashed in Minneapolis on Saturday as the governor's office announced that National Guard troops had been mobilized and stood ready to assist state law enforcement, though they were not yet deployed to city streets. There have been protests every day since the Department of Homeland Security ramped up immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul by bringing in more than 2,000 federal officers. A large group of protesters turned out in downtown Minneapolis and confronted a much smaller group of people attending an anti-Somali and pro-Immigration and Customs Enforcement rally. They chased the pro-ICE group away and forced at least one member to take off a shirt they deemed objectionable. Jake Lang, who organised the anti-Islam and pro-ICE demonstration, appeared to be injured as he left the scene, with bruises and scrapes on his head. He said via social media beforehand that he

BJP claims Foreigners Act 'need of hour', Oppn dubs it 'self-contradictory'

The BJP has maintained that the Centre's recent order to grant residential status to non-Muslim with invalid travel documents from neighbouring countries couldn't have been better timed, even as the opposition perceived it to be a strategy to prevent the party's apple cart from getting upset in poll-bound states of the east. Interpretations of the order across the political spectrum ranged from being the first step towards granting citizenship to persecuted Hindus who crossed over from Bangladesh in recent times to a recipe for a civil war among communities. As per the exemption order, persons belonging to minority communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who sought shelter in India on grounds of religious persecution on or before December 31, 2024 without valid travel documents, would not be prosecuted under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Enforced on September 1, the law mandates creation of a Bureau of

India on UK's 'deport now appeal later' expanded list for foreign criminals

India is among the countries being added to an expanded UK government list of countries where foreign criminals will be deported once they are sentenced before their appeals are heard as part of measures to crack down on rising migration to the country. In an announcement on Sunday, the UK Home Office confirmed that the scope of its Deport Now Appeal Later scheme will be nearly trebled from eight countries to 23, with foreign nationals from these countries to be deported to their home countries before they can appeal against that decision. Foreigners who have had their human rights claim refused will have a chance to take part in their UK appeal hearing remotely from overseas using video technology. For far too long, foreign criminals have been exploiting our immigration system, remaining in the UK for months or even years while their appeals drag on. That has to end, said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. Those who commit crimes in our country cannot be allowed to manipulate the syste

Bangladesh to repatriate illegal Indians through legal, diplomatic steps

Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday said that Indian nationals found staying illegally in the country will be repatriated through proper diplomatic channels. The adviser made these remarks after inaugurating the third floating Border Outpost in Satkhira, news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported. Bangladesh does not engage in push-ins like India but believes in resolving issues through diplomacy", Chowdhury said, according to The Dhaka Tribune newspaper. Bangladesh has always abided by international laws and protocols, he said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already written to India regarding the matter. Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain and National Security Adviser and Chief Adviser's High Representative on Rohingya Affairs Khalilur Rahman are maintaining diplomatic communication on the issue, he added. Argentina orders immigration crackdown, vows to 'make country great again'

Argentina's right-wing President Javier Milei issued a decree on Wednesday curbing immigration to the South American nation, a move coinciding with the immigration restrictions put in place by the Trump administration. In a country that has long prided itself on its openness to immigrants, Milei's abrupt measures and declaration that newcomers were bringing chaos and abuse to Argentina drew criticism from his political opponents and prompted comparisons to US President Donald Trump. Milei's government welcomed those parallels to its close American ally, with presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni saying it was time to honour our history and make Argentina great again. Wednesday's executive order tightens restrictions on citizenship, requiring immigrants to spend two uninterrupted years in Argentina or make a significant financial investment in the country to secure an Argentine passport. Immigrants seeking permanent residency must show proof of income or sufficient means and have

Arizona guv vetoes bill mandating local officials' help with immigration

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs on Friday vetoed a Republican-backed bill intended to support the Trump administration's immigration crackdown by requiring local and state officials in Arizona to cooperate with federal enforcement efforts. Under the proposal, local and state officials couldn't prohibit or restrict cooperation with federal immigration efforts or block the use of federal databases and grant funds related to immigration enforcement. It also would force cooperation on immigration detainers requests from the federal government to hold onto people already in state custody until immigration authorities could pick them up. Supporters say the measure is needed to ensure federal authorities can safely and more easily take custody of immigrants, rather than having to track them down later after they have already been released from state prisons or county jails. Opponents say the state should leave immigration enforcement to the federal government and that the cooperation require
