Gaganyaan Human spaceflight mission: ISRO successfully tests service module

The Indian Space Research Organisation has successfully tested the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System (SMPS) at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu. Wednesday's test involved five liquid apogee motor (LAM) engines with a thrust of 440 N (Newton) and 16 reaction control system (RCS) thrusters with a thrust of 100 N, the national space agency headquartered here said in a statement. The Gaganyaan project envisages demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching a crew of three members to an orbit of 400 km for a three-day mission and bringing them back safely to Earth, by landing in Indian sea waters, according to ISRO. The Service Module (SM) of Gaganyaan is a regulated bi-propellant based propulsion system that caters to the requirements of the Orbital Module, performing orbit injection, circularisation, on-orbit control, de-boost manoeuvring and SM based abort (if any) during the ascent phase, the statement said. IIT Indore develops low-cost camera in collaboration with Nasa, Caltech

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore in collaboration with the NASA-Caltech from the US and Sweden's University of Gothenburg has developed a low-cost camera setup which can provide multispectral imaging of four chemical species in a flame using single DSLR camera. Using only a single DSLR camera, it can simultaneously capture multiple spectral three-dimensional images of four chemical species in a flame, whereas earlier scientific imaging required a complex system with four cameras, said Devendra Deshmukh, professor with the IIT Indore's Department of Mechanical Engineering. It would come in handy for the study of combustion of fuels which in turn can lead to improvement in combustion engines to make them more efficient and reduce carbon emissions, researchers believe. The picture of the four chemical species present in a flame can be clicked together in complete detail with this smart camera, a professor of IIT Indore involved in the research told PTI. India targeting late 2024 for maiden human spaceflight launch: Govt

India's maiden human space flight mission is targeted for launch in the fourth quarter of 2024, Union Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh told Lok Sabha on Wednesday. In a written reply, Singh said that the astronaut designates for the human spaceflight had been identified and were currently undergoing their mission-specific training in Bengaluru. Singh said in view of the paramount importance of crew safety, two test vehicle missions are planned before the Gaganyaan-1' mission to demonstrate the performance of the crew escape system and parachute-based deceleration system for different flight conditions. Singh said the uncrewed G1' mission is targeted to be launched in the last quarter of 2023 followed by the second uncrewed G2' mission in the second quarter of 2024, before the final human space flight H1' mission in the fourth quarter of 2024. He said the G1' mission was aimed at validating the performance of human-rated launch vehicle, orbital module ...
