3 army officers among 5 injured as colleague opens fire, explodes grenades

At least five army personnel, including three officers, were injured when an officer allegedly opened fire and exploded grenades inside a camp in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, official sources said. The officer, said to be of the rank of major, opened fire on his colleagues without provocation during a shooting practice session and then took shelter in the armoury of the unit and lobbed grenades at his superiors who moved near the building in an effort to persuade him to surrender, the sources said. The tense situation lasted nearly eight hours before the officer was overpowered inside the armoury. The incident took place at the Neeli post near Thanamandi in the district. The army evacuated a village in the close vicinity of the armoury as a precautionary measure, they said. The army, however, claimed that an officer was injured in a likely grenade accident at a post in Rajouri. "On 05 Oct 23 one officer was injured in a likely grenade accident at a post in ..

High altitude firing ranges in Arunachal made available for armed forces

Two super high altitude firing ranges were made available to the armed forces for the practice of various kinds of weapons and surveillance equipment in Arunachal Pradesh within an aerial distance of 50 kilometres from the highly sensitive Line of Actual Control, sources said. The initiative to hand over the land of the Mandala and Kamrala firing ranges, located at an altitude of above 10,000 feet, to the armed forces was taken by Chief Minister Pema Khandu. While the first of the integrated surveillance and firepower training exercises named 'Buland Bharat' has already been conducted at Mandala in May, a major firing exercise is yet to be conducted at the Kamrala firing range, security sources told PTI. Both the super high altitude firing ranges are located within 50 km aerial distance of the LAC. Arunachal Pradesh shares a 1,129-km-long LAC with China's Tibet Autonomous Region. BJP's 'fake nationalism' visible: Kharge on new armed forces pension rules

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday slammed the BJP over the new disability pension rules for armed forces personnel, alleging that its "fake nationalism" is yet again visible through the move. The Narendra Modi government is a "habitual offender" in working against the welfare of jawans, ex-service personnel and veterans, he alleged in a post on X. According to media reports, the All India Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association has strongly protested against the new policy on disability and death benefits of defence personnel and their widows. The policy was made public on Wednesday by the Ministry of Defence. In his post on X, Kharge said, "BJP's fake nationalism is yet again visible in the new disability pension rules for our brave Armed Forces!" Around 40 per cent of Army officers retire with disability pension and the change in the present policy will flout multiple past judgments, rules and acceptable global norms, he said. Collective efforts needed to address complexities of Indo-Pacific: Rajnath

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday called for "collective efforts" to deal with the complexities of the Indo-Pacific, and ensure a future marked by prosperity, security and inclusivity in the region. In an address at the 13th Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs' Conference (IPACC), Singh pointed out that states must recognise that global issues involve multiple stakeholders and no one country can address these challenges in isolation. His comments came amid growing global concerns over China's aggressive military behaviour in the Indo-Pacific. The defence minister said peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific can be achieved in consonance with the ancient Indian ethos of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The world is one family). Delegates from over 30 countries are attending the conference being hosted by the Indian Army. Singh emphasised that the Indo-Pacific is no more a maritime construct, but a full-fledged geo-strategic construct, and the region is facing a complex web of security ...

Long-pending claims worth Rs 400 crore by a significant number of junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and other ranks of the Army have been settled following a joint initiative by the force and the defence accounts department, official sources said on Sunday. Majority of the claims pertained to house rent allowances, pay fixation cases and education allowances to children of the Army personnel, they said. The Army headquarters and the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA), the office that heads the defence accounts department, carried out the pan-India outreach to clear the cases of claims, the sources said. To clear the pending cases, a "war room" was established in the CGDA and cases were being monitored closely, the sources said, adding the exercise has benefitted a large number of JCOs and other ranks. Disarmament pre-condition for talks: Sitaram Yechury on Manipur crisis

The government must ensure disarmament to start the talks with the warring Kuki and Meitei communities for resolving the crisis in Manipur, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Sunday. Speaking to reporters at the Manipur Press Club, Yechury said the 'double engine' government of the BJP should double its efforts in resolving the conflict, which has been going on for over three months. "There has to be some sort of dialogue and discussion, and that is where the governments -- both Centre and state -- have the primary responsibility. If it's a double-engine government, then please make double-energy efforts to try and bring everybody together to a table. We have done this in the past. It is the only way all problems that India has faced in last 75 years have been resolved," he said. "Disarmament should be a pre-condition for the talks. Talks have to begin with ceasefire, and then it should proceed on the issues," he added. Yechury also urged the Centre to send a ...
