Tension prevails in Mangaluru after stone peltings on places of worship

Tension prevailed in Katipalla town and BC road in Dakshina Kannada district on Monday after incidents of stone-pelting on two places of worship and clashes between two groups, police said. The incidents of stone pelting at Katipalla town in Mangaluru taulk took place on late Sunday night, but due to quick action, the situation came under control and no untoward incidents were reported in the area. Window panes of the place of worship were shattered, they said. According to police, the alleged stone pelters came on two bikes and sped off. Following the incident, heavy police deployment has been put in place. Punjab Police arrests 2nd suspect in Chandigarh grenade blast incident

Punjab Police on Sunday said it has arrested the second suspect involved in the Chandigarh grenade blast incident. Vishal Masih, a resident of village Raimal in Gurdaspur's Batala, was nabbed from Delhi, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said. Two suspects, who came in an auto-rickshaw, had carried out the grenade blast at a house in upscale Sector 10 here on September 11. Police arrested main perpetrator Rohan Masih, involved in the blast incident, on September 13. "Within 72 hours of the Chandigarh Grenade blast, the @PunjabPoliceInd in coordination with Central Agencies has arrested the second perpetrator of the blast, Yadav said in a post on X. Wing commander booked for alleged rape; IAF says cooperating with police

An FIR has been registered at Budgam police station against a Wing Commander following a complaint by a woman flying officer accusing him of rape, officials said here on Tuesday. The IAF said it is cooperating with the police. Both the Indian Air Force (IAF) officers are currently stationed in Srinagar. In a major reshuffle in the police establishment, the Maharashtra government on Thursday transferred nearly two dozen Superintendent of Police (SP), Deputy Commissioner-rank officers and IPS probationers. As per transfer orders issued by the state home department, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Raj Tilak Roshan has been shifted as Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) at the Maharashtra police headquarters in Mumbai. IPS officer Tejaswi Satpute, who was serving as a DCP in Mumbai, has been moved to Pune city. FIR against contractor, consultant over Shivaji Maharaj's statue collapse

Police in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district have registered a case against the contractor and the structural consultant in connection with the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue, officials said on Tuesday. The 35-foot statue of the 17th century Maratha warrior king, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajkot fort in Malvan tehsil of Sindhudurg on Navy Day (December 4) last year, collapsed around 1 pm on Monday. The incident caused embarrassment to the Eknath Shinde-led state government and invited criticism from the opposition parties. CBI geared to help states implement new criminal laws, says agency chief

CBI Director Praveen Sood on Thursday said the central agency is geared to help states and other stakeholders implement the three new criminal laws which came into force earlier this week. He also said that the CBI is working with the Law Ministry to successfully implement the three new laws. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the Indian Penal Code(IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act respectively from July 1. Police can detain people who resist, disregard law under BNSS provisions

A police officer can detain a person who resists or disregards lawful directions to prevent a cognisable offence, according to the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) which came into effect on Monday. The BNSS, which replaced the British-era Code of Criminal Procedure, has introduced "a new insertion" as Clause 172 in 'Preventive Action of the Police'. It states that people must conform to directions of the police issued in the course of preventing the commission of a cognizable offence, officials said. The provision allows a police officer to detain such person and produce them before a magistrate or, in petty cases, release the person as soon as possible within 24 hours, they said. Under the BNSS, police officials have been given a layer of immunity in cases of dereliction in carrying out duties on the orders of an executive magistrate to disperse unlawful assembly. In such cases, police officers cannot be prosecuted without the sanction of the government. Under clause 58

The Maharashtra government on Friday directed the state police to take stern action against those creating deepfakes, saying such content is a cause for concern amid the poll season. According to an official release, the number of deepfakes and doctored photos being circulated on social media and digital media has risen during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Deepfake is a video of a person in which their appearance has been digitally altered so that they look like somebody else. Such manipulated content is being created using machine learning (ML) or artificial intelligence (AI), it said, adding that the use of this machinery during elections is a cause for concern. Deepfake content creates misunderstanding and is defamatory, said the government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the three new criminal justice laws were enacted with the spirit of "citizen first, dignity first and justice first" and that the police now need to work with data instead of 'danda'.
