India's longest rail tunnel opens in Jammu on Udhampur-Baramula rail link

The longest railway tunnel of the country on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) was opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday as he flagged off the first electrified trains of the Kashmir valley. "Prime Minister Modi was present in Jammu and he virtually flagged off two electrified trains simultaneously -- one from Srinagar to Sangaldan in the down direction and the other from Sangaldan to Srinagar in the up direction," a railway official said. He added that the prime minister also inaugurated the 48.1-km-long Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section. "This longest tunnel, which is 12.77-km long and known as T-50, falls between the Khari-Sumber section," the official said. According to the Northern Railway (NR), trains can now run from Baramulla to Sangaldan via Banihal, which used to be the last or originating station earlier. T-50 is supposed to be the most challenging of the 11 tunnels in the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangadal section. According to railway offici

PM Modi to lay foundation of projects worth Rs 3,161 cr in J-K next week

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate or lay the foundation of 209 projects worth over Rs 3,161 crore in Jammu and Kashmir on February 20, the Union territory administration said on Friday. These projects will upgrade infrastructure, strengthen service delivery systems, general employment opportunities and spur progress and prosperity in the Union territory. The prime minister will inaugurate 85 projects and lay the foundation of 124 projects at an event at the M A Stadium in Jammu at 11 am on February 20. Modi is also scheduled to address a public rally, his second in the region after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. Earlier on April 24, 2022, he had addressed a rally in Palli Panchayat in Samba district. The Union territory administration published a full-page advertisement in some leading newspapers on the event, carrying the pictures of both Modi and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha with a captain "Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu Kashmir Aman aur Tarakki ki Nai .

Jammu to issue notices for property source verification of NDPS convicts

In what is seen as a decisive move to combat drug trafficking in Jammu, the administration here is set to issue notices for verifying the sources of properties of those convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, officials said. These directives were issued to Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) by District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya during a district-level committee meeting under the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD). SDMs should issue notices for ascertaining the sources of properties of convicts under NDPS, Vaishya said. Senior Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar and Additional Deputy Commissioner (LO) Ansuya Jamwal, SDMs and other officers concerned were present in the meeting. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the DM urged the SDMs to invoke the NDPS Act to combat the menace. No infiltration along int'l border in Jammu in past year: BSF officer

Inspector General (IG) of the BSF D K Boora affirmed on Tuesday that the force successfully maintained peace along the International Border (IB) in the Jammu frontier and said no infiltration was reported along the border with Pakistan in the past year. He said there has been a significant decrease in the number of drone-dropping incidents. "There was no infiltration along the IB in the past one year. There have been two to three attempted infiltrations, all neutralised in successful operations. Vigilant troops thwarted three Pakistani smugglers attempting to violate the IB to smuggle narcotics into the Indian territory," Boora told reporters here. Pak's third ceasefire violation in 24 days injures BSF personnel in Jammu

A BSF personnel was injured in unprovoked firing by the Pakistani Rangers along the International Border (IB) in the Ramgarh sector of Samba district on early Thursday, a senior official said. The firing targeting Border Outposts in the district is the third ceasefire violation in 24 days by the Pakistani Rangers along the IB on the Jammu frontier. BSF personnel fires warning shots along international border in Jammu

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel fired a couple of warning shots after a group of people escorted by Pakistan Rangers came close to the international border here on Saturday, official sources said. Repeated calls and messages to the Border Security Force (BSF) for an official comment on the incident in the Arnia area of R S Pura sector went unanswered. According to the sources, a group of more than 20 people with a herd of bovine animals and accompanied by three Pakistan Rangers personnel entered the Indian territory around noon following which a BSF jawan fired two warning shots. There was no retaliation from the other side, the sources said, adding that the people returned to the Pakistani side. Two BSF personnel were injured on October 17 when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on an Indian post in Arnia. The BSF lodged a strong protest with the Pakistan Rangers at a commandant-level flag meeting on Thursday.
